Are SSDs safe to use yet? I don't feel comfortable storing mass data in volatile memory.
>>
>>58991054
yes
>>
>>58991054
I've been using one for five years, never had a problem.
>>
>>58991054
I'm pretty sure they are really safe now, unless you use /csg/ SSDs.

But it could be dangerous if you live in a place where there are many power outrages or w/e is writting ayyy.

But for laptops is absolutely fine unless you don't have the battery for it and don't have the original charger, since it could fuck shit up the hardware including the SSD.

Bump for you and >>>/g/sqt

They have been since 2010.

Why do you need SSD for your facebook machine?
>>
>>58991054
have one running since 2008, no problems.
Intel X25-M. Maybe it will die soon, maybe it won't. It's still serving as main drive on a i7 2600k machine running windows 7.

How long can you keep an ssd off for?

Just wait for X-Point, brohinder

SSDs are not volatile you retard, they're flash memory. Back to high school kid.
>>
Been using SanDisk SSD for years and no problems.

Also have a Samsung SSD that had some firmware bugs that caused it to be slow but that was fixed.

tl;dr i recommend sandisk
>>
>>58992517

do not listen to this guy,
use Samsung
>>
>>58992345
>>58992231

This is bullshit. I bought an Intel 40GB way back in 2011, it was unused for 5 years and plugging it into my laptop, everything was still fine and worked.
>>
>>58991054
even recent HDDs have volatile memory used as caches by its controllers in case of frequent data blocks reads/writes, so don't worry
>>
>>58991054
>I don't feel comfortable storing mass data in volatile memory.
SSDs are not volatile memory.
>>58992231
Under standard conditions, they're guaranteed to store data without power for a year. I'm assuming you've heard of the clickbait article, where they used SSDs at abnormally low temperatures and then stored them at a temperature that'd make a normal person pass out from a heat stroke in short order.

How heavy of a rock have been living under

I've been using a Vertex 4 since it came out, it's still working and it had a 5 year warranty which will end this year I think.

I had a HDD die on an older P4.
>hundreds of tabs of bbw porn open in both chrome and ffox (before I got into sissy stuff)
>thing froze hard, couldn't access it again
>computer literally froze and I had to shut the PSU off
Wasn't my OS drive, but still sucked because it was full of torrentz and every seinfeld episode

You don't even know what volatile means do you, you fucking retard?
>>
I'm using one right now for almost a year, no problems yet. Actually i'm more interested in a proper, unbiased comparison between SSDs and HDDs when it comes to failure rates. Cause HDDs fail all the time too ya know.
>>
>>58992886
I just heard not to buy seagate. It was about 50 bucks for a 1TB WD Blue but the seagates are always so cheap, there might be something to it

>I just heard not to buy seagate.
Not that guy but you're OP, aren't you? You have a habit of buying into clickbait bullshit hook, line and sinker, don't you?

The "don't buy seagate" bullshit started from a cloud company putting consumer drives into cobbled together enclosures where they shook themselves to death from overuse. Real failure rates around less than 2%, which is around the same as WD drives.
>>
>>58992974
The final blackpill.
>>
>>58992956

That's some pretty wonky advice, reliability varies a lot with the year, model and batch of a HDD. Maybe Seagate have a lot of duds on the market right now but that doesn't mean all of them are bad. My top favorite for HDDs are IBM/Hitachi, but even they occasionally have models with issues.

people have been telling others to avoid seagate like the plague years before that shit company published their "study". it's always been exaggerated, but there were a few models that had relatively high failure rates back in the late mid-late 00s. they're all fine now though.
