Yes I am, and no, I have a bunch of different flannel plaid shirts I wear.

The band is a Staib Milanese mesh with a brushed finish. Expensive, but probably the best Milanese mesh you can get.

Holben's Fine Watch Bands sells them in the US, otherwise Watch Band Center has the biggest selection of German made Milanese mesh brackets at all thicknesses and price ranges (that aren't Chinkshit).

But definitely take the cost of customs into account. And also a service because if something happens I've heard Jomashops warranties are considered worthless. So weigh up those total costs and compare how much you could get one locally from an AD

Excellent brands omitted at various price points: A. Lange and Sonne, Girard Perregaux, Piaget, Nomos, Sinn, Damasko.

Terrible watch brands omitted which should be soecifically warned against: IWC, Panerai, TAG HueHue.

Brands which need to be judged case by case since they have nice watches and terrible watches: Most of them.

Basically, that whole guide reads like it was written by someone who spent a couple weeks on /r/watches and tried to regurgitate everything they read uncritically into one picture.

This is actually very good, thanks.

Then my question is: automatic wind mechanical vs quartz kinetic?
I'd choose the former to avoid the battery, are there other pros/cons?
>>
>>58989595
I'm got 7 inchers so maybe I'm biased but 45mm is really pushing it in watch sizes, I would definitely say the 42mm will hold its style longer (and value probably)
>>
>>58991490
They're going to be pretty similar. They'll both need servicing if you want to keep them long term (like, for the rest of your life.) Although if you took a "just wear it till it dies, no servicing" approach the battery in the kinetic battery will probably be shot after 10 years, and the mech is likely to last twice as long or better.

One of the main pros for mechanical watches is the love of mechanical watches. So if you don't have that I don't think you'll notice much of a difference.

I love looking at their automatic mechanical mechanism, so I think I'll choose a back-transparent one. I never serviced a watch until now and 20 years of durability are more than enough but I could learn it if it would improve its life.

I tend to have a charitable view of their pricing in light of how much investment spending they've been doing and how committed they appear to be making high quality watches.

The best deals are going to be found by using a proxy bidding service to be able to bid on Yahoo! Japan Auctions, but it is caveat emptor over there, so you better know what you are doing and have some risk tolerance.

The key factor in buying nay kind for vintage watch is that you have to do enough of your own research to be able to vet auction listings yourself for authenticity, condition, and price. Otherwise you are almost certain to get ripped off by a redialed frankenwatch.

It wouldn't be "garbage" if they were a lot cheaper. It's sort of the same with companies like IWC. It's not that they're outright bad in an absolute sense, but rather that what you're getting for the significant price isn't much to write home about.

>Unironically comparing Nomos to IWC

No.

Nomos pricing reflects the large R&D and capital investments required to become a production movement designer and producer at Nomos' production volumes. The DUW 3001 caliber is a ground up ultra-thin automatic caliber.

IWC sells $10,000 ETA powered shitters and spends ITS money on cringe inducing advertising targeting precisely the same segment of the nouveau riche as Panerai.

Seiko doesn't get their watches certified by a Swiss observatory though. A watch can be very accurate without having "chronometer" on the dial. But fair point, the movement on that Seiko isn't fancy at all for the price point.

Just be quiet. You clearly have no understanding of the scale of investment required for a company the size of Nomos to conduct R&D, design and development and series production of mechanical movements.

Nomos pricing climbed in tandem with their increasing investment in movement design and manufacturing, because the investment spending required is quite large relative to their output volumes.

Furthermore, you are simply lying about the quality for manufacturing and finishing on their watches.

You are exactly the worst kind of person into watches who thinks they know what they are talking about but has zero actual understanding of horology.

Here is a little exercise that might educate you a little bit, you inveterate pleb:

Go look up how many current watchmakers are fully independent (I.e. not owned by a large group), who exclusively design and manufacture their own movements (I.e. don't use ANY ebauches), what their production volumes are, and what they charge for their watches.

Hint: Nomos are probably the least expensive non-China made watches on the market that fit that criteria.
>>
>>59001059

Seiko now eat shit faggot. And no, not all of Seiko watches are made in China, only the cheapo mall ones.
>>
>>59001059

>>
>>59001126
Seiko 5s are made in Malaysia but I agree nonetheless Nomos look tacky af
Go on Google images type nomos and they all look near enough the same, no diversity at all to an extent. Bauhas a shit imo
>>
>>59001126

Are you stupid perhaps?

Seiko has roughly a thousand times the production volume of Nomos and thus their cost per movement is a tiny fraction of what it is for nomos.

>>59001217

Yes. With a movement R&D budget of zero and using 50 year old movement manufacturing equipment whose capital costs have already been fully absorbed.

Again, you people are simply not understanding how manufacturing businesses work.

Nomos only makes about 20,000 watches per year, meaning that the spending they do on R&D, movement design, and the capital investments and operating overhead required to manufacture movements has to be absorbed by those 20,000 watches per year, meaning the cost per watch is much higher than it would be if they were 10x the size.
>>
>>59001331

>>59001606

I'm well aware of that, but the 6rXX is a much simpler movement than those produced by Nomos and is made in astronomically larger volumes.

Even so, Seiko's high-end Presage models and Brightz models are in the $750-$1000 range, even with the relatively pedestrian 6rXX, and the few 8L35 powered Seiko's are into Nomos price range.

When your production volumes are in the 10,000 - 20,000 pieces per year range, you cannot sizeable increase your investment into R&D, design, and movement manufacturing without it significantly increasing the cost per watch.

When Nomos' watches were priced at 500EUR they were still literal Peseux 7001s or heavily based on that movement with a large number of purchased parts.

Between 2005 and today Nomos went from partly making and mostly assembling Peseux 7001s to scratch designing and manufacturing movements. Like I've been saying, the investment spending required to achieve this from a company the size of Nomos inevitably meant the watches were going have to go up in price.

Nomos designed and now manufactures their own escapement. The number of non haute horlogerie makers capable of this is tiny (Citizen, Seiko, Rolex, ETA, Soporod, Sellita, am I missing anyone?). Nomos apparently invested €11 million in developing the capability to design and manufacture it. For an annual turnover of 10,000-20,000 watches.

Because Vostok today may no longer have the capacity to design and manufacture a new escapement, and because they do not spend anything on movement R&D or equipment since they are continuing to produce a very old and simple design.

Shane is a good dude. There's like three or four at least semi-regular /wt/ posters that have dealt with him now.

The quality of finishing on them doesn't come through well in pictures. They are very well made and Sinn has done a lot of R&D into improving case and movement durability with tegimenting and de-humidifying technologies.

They are legitimate tool watches made to a very good standard.

Vostok has said they have the next two or so movements already designed, potentially with a higher BPH and quick-set date. After their bankruptcy and restructuring in 2010 they've now settled enough to start work on improving once again. To prevent more financial issues they're not taking out any loans or anything, so with their low profit margins they can only do a little bit at a time. The next few months you will see this.

Hey lawyer, glad you're still here, hope you read this.
I've been saving cause I want to buy a Rolex, but I'm still short. I now have the chance to buy my boss's old Type XX and because it's for me, he's giving me a really competitive price for the full set and mint condition. I could buy it and still have something left to start saving for my Rolex.
However, I'm unsure due to the whole "Breguet is a Swatch and therefore is shit" thing. What's your experience with Breguet? Are they worth it?

What kind of photograph do you take lawyer? Where are you going to exibit?

I've heard it was unreliable. Vostok has a ton of variants of movements, but yeah most go nowhere. It's not that they can't, they just choose not to probably for simplicity.

I know there's room to machine out a post on the mainplate for a hack lever. Wonder if they'll ever do that.

I wonder why a lot of manufacturers just won't do that. If the escapement is that close to the keyless work it's literally just one brass part.

I'm not even a fan of their watches, but I am a fan of any watchmaker that actually invests into mechanical movement R&D and production instead of just slapping an existing off the shelf design into their watches.

The number of newly designed production automatic movements since the quartz revolution in the 1970's is really small, since virtually no one in the industry gives a single fuck about movement design and engineering anymore.

Here, let's try making a list of non haute horologie watchmakers that have designed new fully in-house (including hairsprings) automatic movements capable of being series produced since the 1970s:

Seiko (7s26, 6rXX, 8rXX, 8LXX, 9sXX)
Rolex (3135)
Omega (2500, 8500)
Soprod (A10)
Citizen/Miyota (9015)
Nomos (DUW 3001)

Feel free to add any I'm missing. I think how short that list is should speak for itself in explaining why anyone interested in horology should have some respect for the very few remaining manufatures actually developing production automatic movements.
>>
>>59004680
They had a hacking 2434 movement too, but again, simplicity. That's one more hole to mill out, one more spring to cut, one more part to assemble, one more part that could break.

The date is likely a popular worthwhile feature for the public, hacking to the second on a watch that is already not accurate, not so much unless military.

Today there's basically 4 movements: date and no-date automatic and manual. No-date of course simply leaving those parts out. There are a few 24 hourish models, side seconds, but that's merely swapping out a pinion or other part.

Haute horlogerie refers to watchmakers that produce watches with significant complications, and which produce watches in very small numbers with high prices.

Examples include A Lange & Sohne, Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantin, Audemars Piguet, Jaeger LeCoultre, Girard Perregaux, Piaget, Etc.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that.

And I would think you'd label the individual models, not entire brands. They'll still sell you a simple 8J quartz two hander(basically a worse 9f.) That may be nice, but not haute horolgy.

By the way, when talking about Credor, something that sometimes gets overlooked is the 6800 series mechanical. Really excellent and thin mechanical movements, finished very well.

Complete watches have been as thin as 4.4mm. And this comes from a movement that was originally released in 1960s.

The dial and hands are very elegant, and represents the sea and sky.

On the back is where it gets colorful and playful for movement decoration, with a fish wearing glasses (representing Shinji Hattori, president of Seiko) thanking the person.

They made 39 of them (39, 三九 さんきゅ、sankyu, sounds like how japanese pronounce "thank you.")

Basically, a select few got their hands on this.
