it has voice and images and videos (embedded not just links)
Fantastic emojis and custom emojis
The devs are cool and post funny memes
Easy to use UI (I couldn't register a simple account in that shitty IRC command and no UI thing)
Soon its going to have video calls too
I can go on but I hope you got BTFOed and if you want to say "muh freedom", not everyone hides CP like you in their PC, so we don't have anything to hide beside the porn search history that's two clicks away from deletion

If you can't even figure out how NickServ works, what are you doing on /g/? It gives you a set of instructions so straightforward and simple that you shouldn't even be able to get it wrong. This would be the equivalent of going to /k/ without knowing how to do something as simple as disassembling your gun, or even worse, how to load and fire it.

People understand registering for an account and friends lists etc much better than messaging NickServ and joining channels etc (not even gonna mention needing to host a BNC just for offline messaging)

They both still have their advantages/disadvantages over each other though, it's really too bad Discord isn't open source, if it was I could see it replacing IRC pretty easily after some changes

I was just memeing desu. But I'll tell you why I don't like Discord.

I don't like Chromium's god awful font rendering.
I don't like that Discord has no options for font size unless I either 1) open the dev console and force it to scale everything down, 2) write a goddamn entire custom CSS for it, or 3) write a plugin to get this basic functionality that everything else has.
I don't like that Discord's UI isn't responsive at all. It doesn't react to resizing the window, doesn't resize or rearrange a single UI element other than the most fucking important one. The user list and "server"/channel list both stay just as huge if you make the window narrower. Shit's retarded.
I don't like that the "light" theme only affects half the fucking client.
I don't like that it doesn't adhere to system defaults. Why does it need to replace the perfectly good title bar with something that takes up literally twice as much space ? Why can't I press Escape to close the rightclick menu ? Why does fucking Chromium use its own shitty ass font rendering, forcing it on everyone who uses Chromium based shit ?
I don't like that I can't view a specific private conversation with a single keyboard shortcut. I especially don't like that Ctrl+1 brings me to the last opened conversation regardless of whether I just got a notification for a different one.

Based on these things, I legitimately don't understand how people like this user experience. I don't understand what makes people think it's good. It isn't. Fucking Skype is a better piece of software on nearly all points.

Font rendering isn't an issue to me. I am not autistic in that way.
Font size is usually not customizable. I can't find any font customization in skype.
It does not work well with a narrow window size. I'm OK with this, as programs like skype don't let you change the window size past a certain point.
I'm unable to find the light theme. Sucks that there's not another theme available by default. I don't think skype supports any themes.
The window does suck--I hate moving it around, but that's about it. It's not terribly distracting. What bothers me more is windows that can't be moved or resized.
I usually left click to get out of right clicks.
I find it doesn't handle direct messages well. I would rather get an email or text message though. I don't particularly consider discord as a text client.

Now onto positives:
It easily allows you to join multiple communities with a small link
The web interface allows for bots, making things easier for the more technically inclined
You can easily create a new server without much trouble
Voice uses Opus. I honestly don't know why someone would use Mumble, Teamspeak, or Ventrilo over Discord, as Discord also has a somewhat well implemented text channel system which includes a searchable history.

I don't think any comparable voice+chat software is as easy to use.
>>
>>58985251
I bet you use a Mac and an iPhone too faggot
>>
>>58985251
>It easily allows you to join multiple communities with a small link
The links expire and malfunction, whereas a simple /join #channel is enough in my irc client.
>The web interface allows for bots, making things easier for the more technically inclined
The bots on discord are pure cancer. Some channels I've joined have a multple times more bots than users. Also, a text interface is of equal usefulness to a bot as it is to a human. IRC wouldn't have the disadvantage of being bound to a graphical shell, so it doesn't need to engineer around it.
>You can easily create a new server without much trouble
You can create a room, but the actual servers are centralized. You can't have your own server at all, you're just using someone else's servers. Well, with irc, you can spawn a channel by joining it and have ops.
>>
It's because /v/ can't into irc.

I've never seen an IRC client with an UI as shitty as the Discord one. Just awful.

The images, videos, emojis, custom emojis, and voice are all cons, not pros. The first four are all much better served with links or plaintext, and for voice, mumble exists. Discord is harmful because due to some muh-integration nonsense, people prefer running one program that does both text and voice badly to two programs of which one is dedicated to text (and therefore does it better) and one to voice.

Discord was heavily shilled on its launch to game devs which rely on it as part of feedback for early access games and to gather data instead of relying on server hosting with the traditional bundles of teamspeak, ventrilo, mumble.

It's a terrible botnet, anyone sensible enough would notice it from the start.
>>
>>58984887
the UI is like twitch threw up and an an instant messenger came out, and bearing witness to it made teamspeak puke up a little bit onto the pile too.

Look, if discord can manage to find my CC and SS# then I would have to worry more about the hundreds of other sites that can also have my info. Discord has no way of IDing anyone through those methods, all they got is usage data from the app itself and possibly any browser tabs you have open alongside discord.

>If you don't care about your privacy for one app why not give up ALL your info?
Flawed logic. Again discord doesn't collect any payment info, so why does that equate to my CC and Social being open to the internet? Discord isn't some black market irc chatroom and no one is on there worrying about their messages being leaked n shit.

It's so much easier to instruct someone to join a discord server if you don't have the software installed though:
discord.gg/Bq9Xdd and follow the instructions vs download an IRC client, connect to 64.29.30.11 then type /join #faggot. The IRC client involves a LOT more keypresses.

APIs were created so that you don't have to be bound to a graphical shell.

OK /g/ I HAVE THIS FIGURED OUT
HOW TO TRICK NORMIES INTO USING IRC

Step 1.
Put all existing IRC applications to the thrash bin.
Step 2.
Create a logo.
Step 3.
Create a Discord-like shell for IRC. The less commands a person has to type in and more buttons he has to press the better. Links to videos and images should be embedded client side. It should all run on javascript and have some web page for hosting but a person could just save the webpage and still access the features with an older version that he stored.

People used to absolutely hate WinXP when that came out. People called it fisher price, bloated, slow, complicated. There was a lot of people that stuck with Win98 and Win2k for a long time after WinXPs launch.

For the Win98 crowd, WinXP fucked them over big by having poor compatibility with a lot of the applications people used on a regular basis. Stuff that either required Win9x or MSDOS.

In my opinion. Win2k was the last genuinly good version of Windows. It was simple, and fun to use, very stable.
>>
>>58984887
Because I don't have to install something for it.

Honestly, is there anything bad about it when you use the web client and never post anything important on it?
>>
>>58996851
They called it fisher price because of a ui change that takes all of 1 minute to change if you don't like it.

If you had win 2000, you weren't stuck on it, it was legitimately better till around service pack 1 then you made a judgement call, and once sp 2 came round, xp was hands down better.

my windows 98 computer was a pentium 333, had i think at the end 120~ mb of ram, and a 32mb video card, it also had a 5.6gb hdd. Even on a fresh install, 98 would blue screen every other day, and by month 2 it would be every few hours, legitimately tried switching to linux at points because of how bad it got.

just by looking at it, xp would have eaten 1/4th my hdd at launch and about 2/3 to 3/4 the hdd at sp3

If you had a 98 computer, you were on very much legacy hardware, and this was an era where 1-1.5 years saw doubling in performance. honestly. this 1500$ 98 computer would not have fucking worked with xp or worked horrifically, especially considering how light weighing 98 was, but once hardware picked up a bit, or you bought a current computer xp was easily the better os (2000 withstanding)

win7 would have been another xp had it come out when vista did, as it had much the same issues as xp but ramped the fuck up to even new current hardware would not run it well, by the time 7 came out, the hardware had caught up so it was great right out the box.

Because it's shilled very very heavily. /v/irgins are easily convinced to buy into stupid shit and use it. It's full of vulns and bugs though, so you shouldn't use it. IRC is also shit.

If you don't care about freedom, just use Skype.

If you do care about freedom, just use Tox or one of the other many alternatives to IRC.

Maybe if you're retarded.

IRC is long past dead.

Probably along with /g/, but if you get hit in the head a few times, you could drop down to /pol/ or upper-/v/ tiers.

You're simply doing it to fit in with the actual smart people. You'd never be able to explain free software to others, and you don't program or contribute to free software in any meaningful way.

Quality post, anon. I await the triggering of the /pol/ & /v/ who come here to talk about things which aren't technology, like trackers and /sqt/.

To trigger you
