So I'm going to a local Infosec conference for the first time soon.
I'm pretty interested in the field, but I just don't know much about it other than a couple of Black Hat and Defcon seminars on YouTube.
It seems cool, but I'm still skeptical if it's actually what I want to focus on.
What should I expect in the conference?

Keep your phone on airplane mode until you leave.
Depends what part you're interested in. I work in infosec but in threat intelligence. I love it, but I have to run elbows with other infosec sects like compliance and shit, and I fucking hate them...Hate isn't a strong enough word actually...
If you're into the pentesting or intelligence side it's a lot of fun and interesting work, if you're gunning to get a CISSP and talk about PCI and HIPPA and expect people with technical abilities to care, go throw yourself in a fire.
Also don't be a poser faggot, if you're unfamiliar about something do try to fake it, people will quickly realize you're full of shit. Use the opportunity to ask questions and try to learn something new.
Also leave your trench coat at home and don't say shit like haxor unless you're joking...

I don't fully understand all the positions you can go into in the Infosec profession, but I do know I don't necessarily want to go into the social engineering side of it.
The career path is mostly what I'm trying to get out of this conference.

Have to admit, it came to me in the form of a typo.

or don't
it doesn't matter
no one at an 'infosec' conference knows anything about actually attacking

Strongly suggest you budget about 3 or 4 hours every day from now until you go, reading up on other conferences, papers, check out serious videos (pewdiepie is not serious, in case you are confused) ... just generally get yourself as maximum educated as you can, do a shit-ton of homework.
You'll then get about as much as you possibly can out of this conference.
After you attend, reflect deeply on how excited it got you. On a scale of 1-10, if it rates an 8 or better then it's a good career choice for you.
If you rate the experience under 8, find a different hobby.
