I have a problem with the nouveau drivers freezing (within, at most, a few minutes) when using KDE, but I want to install openSUSE with KDE. Does this method seem sound to you?

>install using text-based installer
>deselect the nouveau driver during the installation and only install the vesa driver
>install nvidia driver according to https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:NVIDIA_drivers after completing the installation

I think this should work, but my concern is that the vesa driver might not work with my hardware for whatever reason. Does anyone know if there's a list of cards out there which is works with?

that I can't tell you, since I never bothered learning which of my applications use GTK2, GTK3, or something else.

Nothing I use looks out of place though. That screenshot is from Debian stable but I have testing on my laptop, the only thing that broke was that terminal windows (and nothing else) don't use the correct scrollbar. you're forgetting the part where copyrights are only enforced if one party wants to sue the other party and can prove that it owns the copyright, that the other party infringed on that copyright, etc.
which basically means you have to have at least twice as much money to spend on laywers as the other guy on top of a certain minimum time and resources it would take to even start the process
>>
>>58977993
Well if nobody checks, then you don't. But if someone investigates, it can be given away by object code and function names that are identical to whats in the GPL software. That's easily looked at in a debugger.

There are multiple ways, from checking the way the application makes API calls to actually reverse engineering to get variable names and such.
There are of course methods of obfuscating all of this some are more effective other don't make a difference (cause the profile of execution would stay the same).

But you have to ask yourself.
As a developer, if you're going to go through all the loops and hoops to steal a piece of GPL code, why not fucking write it yourself especially when you consider that in many years ahead someone by pure accident might discover what you've done and rain FSF lawyers on your head.

And no, noone's going to sue you for copying a function.

Taking a GPL application, changing the name and making it proprietary doesn't make a lot of sense does it?
Who's going to pay you if there's a free as in beer (and free as in freedom) version of the thing you're trying to sell with exactly the same features?

Chinks are known for license violations but to these people the concept of law apparently doesn't exist, so why would software licensing be any different.

Cisco however learned the bad way about it and had to pay up.

What does it even mean for a piece of software to be version 1.0?

Isn't it all relative? Don't they all have different conventions regarding that?

Maybe one program's version increases by 0.5 while another's by 0.01 after an equivalent amount of develpment.
By the time program1's at v3.5, program2'd be at v0.07 but they would have equivalently developed features.

How can you compare the extent to which programs are developed by version number?

Slackware jumped from version 4 to version 7 because Red Hat was pumping out versions really fast back then and they didn't want to seem outdated. They also had a 13.37 release some years ago.
Once TeX hit version 3, Knuth started adding digits of pi with every release (3 -> 3.1 -> 3.14 -> 3.141...), with the intention of making pi the actual "official" version number (and probably break all package managers in the process) once TeX has reached the point where no further changes will ever need to be made to it.
But yeah, anything before version 1 means the developer does not consider it a finished product suitable for distribution and production use.

>serious question. how are you supposed to know if someone violated the GPL if the source is closed?

bit of a late reply since I had the page cached, it can be anything from the dev ripping off the code not changing it at all to parts decompiling or debugging identically to gpl code; you'll find examples of android programs ripping off stuff from github and it's blatantly obvious when everything, including the menus, is exactly the same as the programs on github

the issue is proving someone ripped off code in court, it's basically impossible, if this is a concern for you then using an open source licence isn't the solution

>>58978198
>As a developer, if you're going to go through all the loops and hoops to steal a piece of GPL code, why not fucking write it yourself

because developers and code monkeys are lazy, note all the people who are against the gpl on github projects because they now can't use the software in whatever their work is developing

>>58978475
>GPL was never designed to protect the devs, it was designed to protect the users.

to be fair the gpl does a lot for devs, as linus put it, gpl is great for projects you care about

if anyone makes a fork they're now developing for and contributing to your code base, you get all of that back

Give it a rest for a month.
Soon stretch hits stable so you'll be upgrading your OS again.
>>
>>58979636
This will happen from time to time. Can be the result of corrupted files, softwares breaking things, or even hard drive failure.

The windows OS is very complex and a lot of things can break it.

I have a couple friends who are developers at M$ and complain about this all the time, a lot of codebase doesnt want to be touched, and theyre trying to maintain legacy support for just about everything. There's no way in hell they are trying to break their old OS to force win10, theyre just hoping they can make things as stable as possible.

In my opinion, Windows 10 is a viable upgrade to 7, just get the enterprise edition that allows you to remove cortana and the app store and all that jazz if you want it to mimick win7. Its performance in workstation apps/vidya on identical hardware gives significant gains. There are few reasons to stick to win7 when win10 is significantly faster and more stable.

Outright switching to Linux is a reactionary move that you probably won't like, I recommend you dual-boot and try it out for a while before boldly switching OS's. Do you have a background in linux? Do you consider yourself tech-savy? By the wording of your post I'm inclined to believe youre a casual user. Switching to linux will give you a world of headaches compared to windows, only switch if you have a reason to and are ready.

Use whatever distro you like, although I advise newcomers to stay away from ubuntu for ethical (and bloat) reasons. Debian & Fedora are both great.

Debian is fine. If you want newer software, look into backports, https://backports.debian.org/

or just use Debian testing / unstable. If you get used to Debian, it will serve you for life

As a first time OS you should probably use Ubuntu or Fedora.
When you get comfy with invoking your package manager fom the command line, move to Debian.

I truly think GNU/Linux will dominate on the desktop one day. However it won't destroy Microsoft, they'll just be in a new market of mobile devices.

Linux will conquer the desktop when Apple/Microsoft/Google draw consumers away from desktops and everything is done on tablets, smartphones, wearables, home theater devices, etc. We're almost there too.
Linux will still have 1-2% of the total market share, but that's because 90% of people will be using mobile/wearable tech as their primary device

It'll go higher than that. There are a lot of hardcore PC gamers that will still want desktops for a long time.

Here's a little history for those who are interested.

https://lwn.net/Articles/145233/
>In 2001, Kyle Sallee created a source-based linux distribution called Sorcerer GNU/Linux and released it under the GPL. In late 2001 due to differences with Kyle on how to run the project, a fork was created called Lunar Penguin, now known as Lunar Linux. As a result of confrontations with the Lunar developers, Kyle took Sorcerer off the web one night and nobody could update.
>Many of the developers tried to talk Kyle back into continuing the project, but failed. Ryan Abrams and Eric Schabell took over the GPL'd sources and put up a temporary website. At the request of Kyle, the name was changed, and after a vote, Source Mage GNU/Linux was born. On April 4, 2002, sourcemage.org was registered and website content was put up.
>A short while later Kyle rewrote much of his code and released it under a non-GPL license that prevents forking. These three distributions have continued since, however the rest of this article concerns Source Mage.

http://sourcemage.org/History
>Development now continues on 3 separate distros with three distinct goals:
> - Lunar-Linux aims to produce a stable, solid, source-based distro using well-tested software versions.
> - Sorcerer's aims are unclear at this time, but apparently will create a non-free source-based Linux distro to suit Kyle's vision.
> - Source Mage is working to continue rapid development of the sorcery tools and create a 100% free source-based GNU/Linux distro that allows users the maximum amount of freedom and choice possible.

The wikipedia article says that the initial release of Sorcerer GNU/Linux was in 2007, which is obviously wrong.
Although the rest of the article seems legit.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sorcerer_(Linux_distribution)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Source_Mage

Sorcerer appears to be both non-free and non-existent at present time and nobody gives a shit about Lunar Linux (latest release was in 2014).
>>
>>58982211
I love GNU/Linux and free OSes in general, but I think it's impossible that GNU/Linux ever gets above 10%. We can hope, but the average normie is far too technologically retarded even for buntu.
>>
>>58981306
>busybox is better
Busybox is made for embedded systems such as smart TVs and toasters; it's NOT a replacement.

Furthermore it lacks lots of functionality:

- cat has literally no options
- cp is crippled down
- mv is crippled down
- grep is crippled down
- dmesg is crippled down
and the list goes on.

yeah, except 90% of it is unmaintained, the project has been alpha for 16 years, the "simple bash script" build system is actually annoying to try and review (at first glance, at least) because they split everything up into separate stages in such a way that it's not always immediately obvious which parts get run when and when you start looking at the little fragments, you realize that there's a lot of stuff missing because it's happening behind the scenes in the "package manager". I mean, nothing wrong with that, but for something that was shilled on here as being "an extremely simple build system using simple shell scripts", I was expecting an extremely simple build system using a single, simple, easy to follow shell script, much like the system used my by distro.

>>58983417
because /dev/dsp was leftover from OSS and for a while OSS and ALSA had to coexist for legacy purposes and then as soon as nobody was writing OSS software anymore and ALSA didn't have to maintain that compatibility layer, they dropped it, and then PulseAudio came along... Sound architecture has historically been one of the less stable things on Linux.

I need to allow my internal network to my port 22, how?

I am trying with
iptables -I INPUT -p tcp --dport 22 -s 192.168.29.0/24 -j ACCEPT

but is not working
>>
>>58984227
Don't put in drop rules but make the default one drop BUT only do that after you setup accept rules.

>>58984212
Terrible way of using iptables, would drop the NEW states because with RELATED,ESTABLISED it already assumes the packet is new and now you are double checking ( would save lots of CPU in high bandwidth servers )
Also use default rule to drop instead of multiple lines.
>>
>>58984353
Iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 22 -s 192.168.29.0.24 -j ACCEPT

Likely some other rules trying to block it, check with iptables -nL -v.
Can always iptables -F to flush all rules.
>>
>>58984380
Thanks, I make it work replacing al "-I" to "-A".

Although now is ssh who misbehaves, for some reason don't accept my password and I know I am typing it right.

What do you want to move? How is your thing set up now? If you are content with just moving your personal files/data/settings, you can do a fresh install and copy everything from your home partition (you did make a separate home partition, right?). If you want to transfer everything, I suppose you can partition the target drive in the same configuration (doesn't have to be same size, but obviously big enough for what you had), mount the drive, copy everything over, then make sure to edit the /etc/fstab on your new drive and either update the UUIDs or change it to /dev/sda1, /dev/sda2, etc. You might still have issues, I'm not 100 on this but I know when I tried to do something mildly similar that involved having major changes in filesystems/physical media, I'm pretty sure systemd had a hissy fit because it refused to even trou mounting the drives because whatever metadata it stored about them had changed and it didn't recognize or trust them. But in theory, a normal system shouldn't complian/care where it gets file from, the whole process should be transparent for the clien for shell scripts.

presumably "DenyUsers" is a blacklist, aka, anything not listed here is allowed, and "AllowUsers" is a whitelist, aka, anything not listed here is disallowed
it makes no sense to have both a whitelist and a blacklist

blacklist jane

bob is clearly allowed, jane is clealy not allowed

I'm getting an additional SSD tomorrow so I can go back to a dual-boot setup.
Currently running only Debian Jessie which I installed and setup when I was a complete Linux newb, so there's lots of bloat in this install. Decided It'd be simplest and best to install Win7 on my current smaller SSD and then install Testing from the RC2 netinstaller.

Been using xfce so far, which I like well enough for a DE. However i3wm has been intriguing me. I understand I could just install that on top of xfce, and the guide videos linked on i3wm.org also assume that you have a DE installed beforehand. But is that really the way to go? Wouldn't it be more efficient to only install the software that i3 needs? I'm not sure if the Debian installer comes with an option to install i3 and its dependencies instead of a DE. Anyone got experience with this?

>In linux with gparted while running? It's this easy?
not terribly difficult
yes, you can copy the contents of / and /home while they're mounted (doing so isn't really perfectly ideal, but safe if anything you need saved has been saved)

what i'd do:
1. delete the ntfs partition on sda, replace with btrfs/ext4 partition, mount it somewhere
2. umount swap from sde, delete everything and make a new partition for root, format to btrfs/ext4/f2fs, mount it somewhere. make a new swap partition if you still want one there
3. rsync the contents of your current root to the new root mount, do the same for /home
4. unmount the new /home, mount it under the new root's home folder, bind mount /sys, /proc, and /dev into the new root as well
5. chroot into the new root, and from here install grub to sde, and update grub's config and fstab
6. unmount all the new stuff and consider testing that it's bootable in QEMU, that should be it
>>
I'm stumped at trying to make an opensuse live usb. I've tried
# dd bs=4M if=/opensuse.iso of=/dev/sdc1

if you want to use iptables then block any connection to the website IP (or mutiple IPs), this will stop any connection towards said website for any computer connected to the router:
iptables -A OUTPUT -p tcp -d website_ip --dport 443 -j REJECT

this will not stop them if they use a proxy/tor/vpn/encryptedtunnel obviously.

I'm not sure, altering the hosts file on the router will prevent it to correctly resolve those hostnames, but if a local machine is able to do it anyway (by settings different dns servers) then it should be able to connect.
