Metadata is "data [information] that provides information about other data".[1] Three distinct types of metadata exist: descriptive metadata, structural metadata, and administrative metadata.[2]

Descriptive metadata describes a resource for purposes such as discovery and identification. It can include elements such as title, abstract, author, and keywords.
Structural metadata is metadata about containers of metadata and indicates how compound objects are put together, for example, how pages are ordered to form chapters.
Administrative metadata provides information to help manage a resource, such as when and how it was created, file type and other technical information, and who can access it.[3]

I'm almost done with my Bachelor degree, i just need to take one more class (+the bachelor thesis, but lets ignore that).
Two classes caught my eye: semantics of programming languages, and verification of programming languages.

What's the difference? Verification sounds like verifying that the program does what it is intended to do. Semantics sounds like it's analyzing the meaning of a program, i.e. what it does, i.e. you verify it does what it's intended to do.

Is the intel 600p NVME M.2 SSD good enough for a power user? Or should I splurge for the samsung 960 pro?

The 600p seems as though its about half the speed, however its the same capacity, and half the price. I don't edit huge media files or transfer much data so im not sure the samsung is worth the extra 400 dollars.

For normal use, 600p or plain SATA, unless all you do is stare at benchmarks. Loading/startup time savings are near negligible. http://techreport.com/review/30993/samsung-960-evo-ssd-reviewed/5

>>58970959
Going off specs they're pretty similar. The Huawei should be ahead in performance due to better CPU, GPU, although this differs by region and more RAM, the Samsung has a slightly smaller screen which is a good thing IMO, 5.5" is getting a bit too big, it's also AMOLED instead of IPS. Good for contrast and efficiency especially if you usually keep your screen rather dim, but can be susceptible to screen burn in over time. The Huawei has compass and gyroscope, Samsung doesn't, which is a big deal if you use your phone for navigation or any VR/AR applications.

- Depends what kind of performance you care about
- Pretty easy. Take out all the screws on the bottom cover, lift it off, the RAM slots are on the board.
- Nope, hardware warranty is covered no matter what OS you stick on it. Don't expect Dell support to help you if you call them with software/driver problems though (but why would you do that anyway)
- Probably not at the moment, if you wait for Apple to release stuff with Kaby Lake CPUs it should be okay, the Skylake models apparently mostly work with the exception of the touchscreen http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/319764-guide-dell-xps-15-9550-sierra-10122-quick-installation/

I'm a huge retard and spilled some limeade onto the top of my tower, which after a second that it happened it shut down by itself.

Like any wise person, I unplugged and unscrewed every part of the system, but by the time I did it was too late, since it had dried up. I did my best to clean it, but no result. While I'm not 100% sure, I theorize the only real damage into the system may be the power supply and everything else may be salvageable.

But what should I do? What can I do? How can I test what is dead or alive in my computer? Help

Trying to upgrade an old toaster.

HOW THE HELL DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH RAM PER SLOT YOUR MOTHERBOARD CAN TAKE!

Seriously mad here. I've found so many answers but they are always different. I'm trying to figure out how many GB PER SLOT my mobo can handle. The system can handle a max of 8GB 1333mhz in total. But now I still don't know wheter to get 2x4GB or 4x2GB. Some say that one slot can only handle 2 GB, but I see so many people say you can get the the two 4GB sticks.

I need a laptop that does not stutter every time I build something (had poor experiences with U series Intel CPU) and is not a gaymen shit.

Concerning wiping the SSD, I read somewhere that if something bad happens with the hardware and the software is different from the original one, the support could refuse fixing it claiming that the modified software could have damaged the hardware since the software is not the intended one.

Nah bub, it's recommended to install youtube-dl from the source.

Youtube (other sites a lot less) change their methods of extraction frequently and there's no way distributions that aren't rolling release will be able to keep up.

do
apt-get autoremove youtube-dl

apt-get install python-pip

then
pip install youtube_dl

and everytime youtube will fail to decode just run
pip install --upgrade youtube_dl

>>58973439
with 4 disks only raid10 and raidz1/raid5 would make sense

raidz2/raid6 have dual distributed parity, meaning two disks worth of space are for partity, since this would mean half the disks in your case, you might as well avoid needing to do parity at all and use raid10
arguably, raidz2/raid6 would allow for *any* two disks to fail, not just one of each mirror pair, so it is still a bit safer than raid10

raidz1/raid5 might be something to consider as well, you lose only one disk of space, any any one disk can die. if you're using massive disks though, replacing a failed disk can take some time, if a disk dies while replacing another, you're out of luck

zfs raid is better in some ways, such as raidz1 being immune to the "raid5 write hole", or the efficient scrubbing available due to the raid and filesystem being part of the same system
there are downsides for small/home users though (ZFS was always made for big enterprise stuff), such as how you can't change how many disks are in a vdev after creation

perhaps try setting audio output to null (--ao=null), or telling youtube-dl to not grab an audio track at all (--ytdl-format=bestvideo)

What cloud storage is cheap (5$ range), reliable (ie. microsoft onedrive wont drop data or have 0% uptime, because millions of users and companies rely on it), isn't a pure backup solution that charges for every single file listing you do (ie. backblaze), has some sort of preview preferably (ie. onedrive), good uploads speeds (aka "maxing out" a 5mb/s upload) and lots of storage space (I have currently 700GB that I want to get off my computer)

tl;dr: cloud storage with 5$ price-range, reliable, not pure cold/backup storage, file-preview, 5mb/s upload and as much storage as possible

In 2011 i got a paid internship position in IT (at this point i know nothing really about pc and shit) and my boss taught me the basics of pc shit and i also learned network type of stuff (nothing really deep now that i look back then)

sadly i was a retard and i never pushed more after that job i fell into shit tier jobs, i wanna comeback but i only have higschool and most places want collage tier people and i feel like if i apply they just gonna look at it like

"Look at this uneducated scum trying to get a comfy office job"

In december of last year i saw a offer job with no specific requirements so i applied

Got a interview great i show my ass there and the guy starts asking me shit to see if i know something, he started asking me if i know SQL or php, windows server stuff and then followed to ask me what is the color order of a ethernet cable (something i actually did before but i dont remember the fucking color order in my head) he never asked me pc related stuff (and i was expecthing to be asked pc related stuff)

I left that interview feeling like a retard and feeling like my pc knowledge (that happens to be pretty fucking good rock solid) is not enough so 2017 i look into what else i can learn so i can be more prepared, and im pretty much done learning html and css and im currently learning javascript in my own i have no idea how long it will take to learn javascript

So the question is: How much i need to know to be able to get an IT assistant hotel job?

Hey /g/. So I've managed to find an old Optiplex 330, and according to some research, it is capable of being hacked to support a Xeon CPU, at the best an e5450, according to this site.

http://www.delidded.com/lga-771-to-775-adapter/3/#dell

It also mentions a Q9550, which appears to be slightly slower (2.8 vs 3.0), but is a C0 stepping CPU which won't give any issues, unlike the E5450, which is an E0 stepping CPU. So my question would be, would I be better off getting the Q9550 for this old computer, or should I tinker around with the E5450 and see where that goes? Additionally, will I need any particular BIOS hacks to make either work? And speaking of BIOS hacks, is there any way to make this computer accept RAM sticks more than 2GB each? Cause 2x2GB isn't a lot of RAM, and I assume that what restricts 4GB sticks would purely be firmware related, and not strictly hardware.

Thank you.

I finished my new computer last month. Works fine, posting from it now.
I have an older computer that I purchased (an AIO gateway) from the store some years ago. It has a 500gb HDD that I'd like to take out and put in my new computer so I can take out the files (I have over 30gb of reaction images that I need ASAP) and also use it as a second storage spot.

Is it possible to plug this HDD into my new computer, just like how you'd normally install your first HDD (motherboard and SATA cable and w.e else)?
Mind you I already have a HDD in my new computer and my concern is that the old HDD won't trying starting anything on startup (acting like the primary storage).
I don't want to have to wipe/format it for this to work.

I'm following this tutorial to send an email through python:
https://docs.python.org/2/library/email-examples.html

I have the following code, but I'm not sure why I get an error:
import smtplib
# Import the email modules we'll need
from email.mime.text import MIMEText
import socket

#Open a plaintextfile to read (contains only ASCII chars)
test_text = "Test_email.txt"
fp = open(test_text, 'rb')

#Create a plaintext message
msg = MIMEText(fp.read())
fp.close()

me = "[email protected]"
you = "[email protected]"

msg['Subject'] = "The contents of the file %s" %test_text
msg['From'] = me
msg['To'] = you

print "Senging mail now!"
s = smtplib.SMTP('127.0.0.1', 8000)
s.sendmail(me, [you], msg.as_string())
print "Mail has been sent!"
s.quit()

The code raises the error:
socket.error: [Errno 61] Connection Refused

What should I do to send an email? I tried looking up what I should put for "localhost", but when I plug in my IP address, I get "Connection Timed Out"

I have a program (C#) that writes a batch file to a specified directory and is supposed to automatically run it, but instead of running it I just get a console window that displays the batch script itself and just closes. Moreover, the resulting .bat file still works exactly how I want it to, I just can't get the program to run it for me after it creates it. I'm basically doing
System.Diagnostics.Process.Start("myfile.bat");

and I've tried a number of different variations including explicitly typing out the resulting directory myself (the user is supposed to specify it), writing it as a variable instead, and directly calling %windir%\\system32\\cmd.exe and passing the contents of the batch file as an argument. I've gotten this to work in the past and I don't know what the fuck I'm doing different this time; I literally got the code from a previous program I made that used the exact same method, and it still works in that program. I'm dumbfounded.

Tell me how to find an investor.

* I'm a programmer.
* I have a solid idea for a niche software product/service. There are competitors in the space but mine would have certain significant advantages.
* I have the skills to implement this idea.
* I work freelance so would be almost immediately available to work on it.
* It is not something I could (or would want to) do in my spare time.
* It would be sold as a subscription service and the nature of the product means that a high rate of lock-in is likely; i.e once it is in place it is likely that the customer would not want to move away or could even be effectively forced to stay in many/most cases.

I estimate I would need around $13,000 to fund my daily life for the duration I would work on it. Then there would be marketing of course. Running costs would be fairly minor and would scale well with the client base, so those wouldn't be much of a concern.

Does anyone fund this kind of thing? How would I even start approaching anyone?

My upload speed is oddly being restricted to ~700Kbps. Yesterday it was fine. Help? I reset my cable modem already. The rest of my network config hasn't changed. I also rebooted my computer.
>>
>>58979823
You could put it on kickstarter or some other similar site and see how that goes? That's an easy way to start at least. People got the weirdest shit funded there.
>>
>>58979823
You dont fund it.
You bring up a finished product and sell it to investors.
>>
>>58979824
because it's a scientific hypothesis, not a mathematical one. the notion of "effective computation" is informal, and can pretty much be defined as "things a human can do with a pen and paper". to prove church-turing you would basically have to define consciousness mathematically, and doing so requires subjective assumptions (church-turing is true if you think that the human brain is just a meat machine, for example, but if you're a dualist then it's false)
>>
>>58979880
Trust me, this would not be a crowdfunding winner. The audience is quite small and I've basically never heard of a subscription service being crowdfunded anyway. It needs one investor who will receive a percentage of proceeds.

>>58979896
And there's the classic catch 22. I can't get investors because it isn't build because I can't build it because I don't have investors.
>>
>>58979929
Why do you think you need investors to do it?
You're freelance, just fucking do it. If its a side project from your main job then so be it

Is there a way to set up a spread sheet so that whether I enter a value in the pounds or kilograms column, it will make the conversion into the other? I know I could set up either of the columns to make the conversion of the other, but I want them to both do this conditional on which column has the input value.
>>
>>58979947
It needs months of full-time work. If I were to do this as a side project, it would take years and use up all my time. I enjoy programming but I need balance in life. If I do code in my spare time, it's something fun like a software rasterizer or a toy language. I don't want to wrap up coding for my main client for the day and then go straight on to coding something like this.

That's generally what people do before presenting something to investors.
And if it'd take you "years" why would they entertain you doing it instead of finding someone who could do it in months/weeks/days?

>That's generally what people do before presenting something to investors.
If the project was done, I wouldn't need investors. It would not be an expensive project to maintain. Except for marketing and support, the initial development is the big cost.

>And if it'd take you "years"
You misread me, anon. It would take me years if I did it in my spare time. If I did it as my main job, it would take me a few months.

Either you belive in it enough to make it or you keep whining about it.

No matter what you always have to invest something into your own projects to prove to investors that you're serious about it. It can be sweat equity (working in your free time etc) or real money (pulling some savings to do it full time for a few months)
If you're going to pitch it to an investor you need a minimal viable product.

Not quite what you're asking for... Will this do the trick, perhaps? You type in the value in pounds or kilos in the first column, suffixed by "kg"/"lb", and it will calculate the other two appropriately.
The formula is:
=IF(ISERROR(FIND("lb", A2)), VALUE(REPLACE(A2, FIND("kg", A2), 2, ""))/2.2046, VALUE(REPLACE(A2, FIND("lb", A2), 2, "")))

for column B and
=IF(ISERROR(FIND("kg", A2)), VALUE(REPLACE(A2, FIND("lb", A2), 2, ""))/2.2046, VALUE(REPLACE(A2, FIND("kg", A2), 2, "")))

for column C. There might be a better way, but this is something at least?

It's not like gamedev, where people dedicate themselves to it out of a passion for the art. It's an incredibly fucking boring unsexy business-focused product. If someone else described it to me I would glaze over and ignore them until they stopped talking. In fact, I actively dislike it. its existence would not make the world a better or happier place in any way.

I "believe in it" in the sense that I think there is a place in the market for it, it would sell, and it's worth building. But I certainly do NOT want to devote years of my spare time to it.

Wouldn't bother if you don't care, nobody else probably will either.
You're essentially going to work a job that you hate and don't like, but you can go find work like that anywhere.
>>
>>58980180
It's either-or, you won't find a single person willing to invest on something that one person hasn't even come close to finishing yet.
>>
>>58979823
Prototype it in your own time. It doesn't even need to be functional - it can just be user interfaces with dummy data or even a photoshop mockup, just as long as it shows what the product is and why it's better than the competition.
In terms of actually finding an investor, look into sites like AngelList. You want to find someone who has previously invested in something in the same space but not directly competing with you, and preferably someone that you have a tenuous connection with ("also worked at X once" "went to the same college" etc)

You do have a point. I got excited when I thought of a marketable idea and a plan to implement it, but it seems unlikely I could find anyone to get on board with this when it isn't something I would devote my weekends to.

3-pin: Vin, ground, sense. The speed of the fan can be controlled to a reasonable degree by the mobo by varying Vin. This may or may not be exposed to higher level software.

4-pin: 3-pin plus pwm. Vin can stay constant, control speed digitally with the pwm pin. Better control, better electrical characteristics, etc.

My 3 months old 22" monitor goes black for a second every once in a while, like 10, 15 minutes but it's quite random. Does the same with a couple other computers.
