slow motion train wreck
>>
They're going to take over, trucking first.
People who like driving are going to keep driving manually, but self driving cars are going to be used who just see cars as a way to get themselves to work.

At least until they ban manual driving because it's too dangerous.
>>
>>58968887

/g/o/kart here, /g/ loves them. Let'em have them I guess.
>>
Considering the complexity of image processing I find it difficult to believe that self-driving cars are anything close to what the overblown media pretends they are.

Drill some sensors into road and then we'll talk.
>>

>At least until they ban manual driving because it's too dangerous.
What happens when people realize they can use software radios to drive someone into oncoming traffic?
>>
>>58968934
They realised that 2 years ago and fixed it.
Self driving cars do NOT rely on GPS or external signals to navigate.
They rely on visible spectrum.

What will happen when people realise they can shine bright lights in the eyes of drivers to get them to drive into oncoming traffic?
>>
>>58968887
As much as I like racing hondas on the motorway in my 328i, sometimes I'd like it if the car could just drive itself, doing the same thing over and over gets a bit boring sometimes.

also NA > NB

>Self driving cars do NOT rely on GPS or external signals to navigate.
The hell they don't.
>>
>>58968948
>What will happen when people realize they can shine bright lights in the eyes of drivers to get them to drive into oncoming traffic?

Drivers who aren't retarded are more likely to just slowly stop their car or at least slam on the breaks, but that does give me an idea...

>>58968904
>manual driving is banned because it's too dangerous
>cars no longer have steering wheels
>point lasers at car's sensors and DoS the highway as all cars come to automated stop due to lack of input

>the year is 2035
>5 years after the laser-meme caused havoc
>consumer laser diodes are now banned as weapons of mass destruction
>EndUserĀ® points his projector at traffic and starts projecting bullshit onto the road or into their cameras
>cars all see cars in front of them that don't exist, and start swerving into each other to "minimize collision damage"
>>
You'll pry my old, manual shitbox from my cold, head hands.
>>
>>58968887
botnet
>>
>>58969010
To shine a light at these sensors, you'll have to physically be there, everyone will step out of their car and kick your ass. If not, the police will fine you.
>>
I want one because I hate driving.
>>
>>58968887
driving a car yourself: sex
self-driven automatic car: watching kek porn and being proud of it
>>
>>58969240
s/hate/suck at/
>>
>>58969220
This. They'll probably add backdoors for the government to use. How convenient it'll be for the police when they can just press a button to remotely stop the car and lock the doors so they can't escape.
>>

t. Americuck in 3 hour commute
>>
Who's legally responsible for an accident?
You or the manufacturer. Can't be the manufacturer because they'll go bankrupt.
Can't be you, because you were assured of safety by the manufacturer.
Really all this automated car bullshit is a cover for military bids.
Would this be supported if the real end game was told?
>>
>>58969374
*t. German in 45 minute commute with public transport
>>
>>58969364
yeah that sounds like something that would happen
>>
>>58969454
I don't need to commute my work is 4 minutes on foot from home.
Also not German.
>>
>>58969440
That's the best part. Self-driving cars don't cause accidents. If an accident happens, you can be 99 % sure it was a manual driver's fault.
>>
>>58969440
It will be the person in a non-automated vehicle's fault.
>>
>>58969461
I'm not from America is what I'm saying.
>>
Self driving cars are like 3D TVs, dead.
Some parts of the world will probably like it like America and Japan, since they can't drive, hate driving and spend most their day in congested traffic, parts of the world that love to drive like Eastern/Southern Europe will never hand over their manuals.

They will be used to violate freedom of movement. Want to attend a protest outside of walking distance? Too bad.
>>
>>58968887
I despise them. Driving is not a chore, it's fucking fun and I don't want to be stripped of my agency. I feel the same way about automatics, too but I'll take an automatic car over a blackbox data collection shuttle
>>
>>58969440
This is why it takes $5,000,000 to get an insurance plan to even test new autonomous cars in California. At least for Here it is.

Also botnet.

If I buy a car and I don't have to drive it, what's stopping me from having the car move from place to place while I browse /g/ and /a/ and watch anime all day in the car?

gas
>>
>>58969440
Some sort of 'reasonable security' thing will be worked out.
There's too much money to be made by automating truck drivers to not have this insurance thing hammered out by lawyers.
>>
>>58970037
lol, there goes anons dreams
>>
As long as human driving is still legal, I don't give a shit about them.
>>
>>58970137
Your insurance premiums will likely go up but I don't see manual driving becoming illegal.
>>
Replace all cars with GNU/car. World would be much better with nobody manually driving
>>
>>58970140
I don't have insurance
>>
I dislike driving, maintaining cars, gas stations, etc. so I live in a walkable city with public transit. I would consider getting a car if it could drive, maintain, and fuel itself with minimal to no interaction on my part.
>>
They are incompatible with humanly driven cars.

The could even be safer than traditional cars, at one point in the future (e.g. reduced probability of being in a lethal accident), but they do some weird shit that human drivers (or even pedestrians) will never expect them to do, which will cause a lot of issues.

Humans get distracted, miscalculate distances, miss a STOP sign and so on... but they never stop at random because they suddenly can't recognize the object_road ahead. They get drunk, and miss a curve at night and fly off a cliff... but it's not worse than having a self driven car, in plain day, on a straight road, that suddenly decides to stop because it has to think about if what's ahead of it is road or not-road. You can't have this shit stream along with human drivers.
>>
>>58969010

>Drivers who aren't retarded.
>But I'm too retarded to use 'brake' correctly.

Fucking kill yourself you stupid ignorant nigger learn to fucking spell.
>>
>>58970037
>have electric car with auto driving
>have solar panel to charge batteries
>drive car every 5 blocks every x days
>where x = time it takes to charge the battery with solar panel a sufficient amount
>when low on drive to charging station and autocharge

Fixed now
>>
I like driving, it's fun. Every car should be replaced with automated driving cars though, humans can't compete with machines.
>>
>>58968948
Fucking with autocars becomes a felony just like fucking with airplanes
>>
As long as I can still jaywalk I don't care.
>>
I look forward to it but I'm not getting my hopes up.
>>
>>58969251
That sounds like a better analogy for public transportation, actually.
>>
>>58970220
Exactly. It's almost as if there's a law and enforcement system in modern societies to deal with 'well what if someone just puts a sharp metal object into your torso and takes your money?'
>>
>>58969240
same
>>
I can't wait for the day some prominent politician dies in a self driving car. Sure it may have just been an accident, but perhaps he was assassinated.

Really I just want cyperpunk, and moar neon signs
