At the moment, Dell Precision M6300.

T7400
4GB RAM
640GB HDD
Quadro FX1600m
1920x1200 17" LCD
Windows 7

I hate it. This setup was only ever any good because we didn't know any better.

I'm torn between a couple things, possibly a Lenovo L51s when they come out, because I'm not home most of the week anyway. Or I might pick up a Dell XPS 15. Undecided...

None of the functions it added have been useful on a daily basis to me other than word prediction in Safari, autofill info, and Preview highlighting. The fingerprint scanner is nice too, but other than that the TB hasn't really been put to great use yet. The video/audio scrubber has been nice but it's not essential. In the end I'm glad to have it, I just hope it gets better.

Asus G75VW.

I got it when I travelled a bunch for work back in 2012 and wanted a laptop I could play games on. Since then its made a great backup workstation because the components are strong enough. Ivy Bridge i7, 12gb ddr3 ram, 660m GPU. I've always been a bit curious why these laptop manufacturers go with high end CPUs and low-to-medium GPUs.

Get your hands on one, the build quality is the best of any laptop I've ever owned, it feels great. The only negative I've found is battery life, but it isn't bad enough to be a problem, just not as good as my 2015 rMBP was. It's improved with OS updates and some users announce better results than others, but I can still depend on it enough to not carry a charger with me to an 8 hour day of classes.

But you can't even make it past 60hz
>>
>>58968246
Oh yeah dude the build quality is amazing. I have an apple store a few miles from me and i played around with it for a while. I was worried about the 15" being too big and clunky but its really not. Battery i dont really care about enough, because my classes are always so spaced out that i can charge in between. Im just worried about wasting 25 hundo. But duuude i wanted one before trying it out but now after im really set

Is it really so hard to understand that you might travel and want to work AND be able to play games comfortably? the laptop monitor is a 120hz gsync. When I'm docked at the desk I have 3 monitors. It still cost less than the mac for considerably more power.
>>
>>58968290
I'd go for it if you have the money. I bought it with the intention of using it for at least 3-4 years and it's the first laptop I've owned (including last year's MBP) that feels like it won't have the slightest problem lasting that long
>>
>>58968518
This is true, the build quality is really unparalleled. That's what you're paying for. I'm the fag with the 1070 / 48gig msi frankenstein. I sold my 2013 mbp to pay for the base laptop before I added ram and 3 tb of ssd.

Still have my 2011 matte model upgraded with more ram and an SSD. Runs like a dream, better than the day I bought it even. No complaints unless they stop me being able to update the OS.
>>
whats the point of a laptop when you just stay home all day?
>>
>>58969480
13"
It isn't bad but it leaves much to be desired. It doesn't get a full 10-12 hours like I would get with light usage on last year's model, but the trade off for all the improvements is worth it. I can get 7-8 hours of similar usage. Kinda shitty, but nothing to get upset over.

I found it to be good value compared to some competition and I do like it. Performance is good and it works. Build is great but not quite MacBook Pro or Surface Book level. Display is great but aside from the massive resolution not as good as MacBook Pro or Surface Book. Battery life is good(much better with lower resolution screen) and overall package is only missing a dedicated SD card slot. Most positive stuff is already said in reviews and it is a good device. I think it's better to say something negative at this point.

1. Main gripes would be display color accuracy out of the box but I calibrated it so I can do some photo work on it if needed. Gamut, brightness and contrast is good, something you would expect from a modern IPS.

2. Some of the keys on the keyboard can be a bit finicky but overall the feel is nice and compared to what I've previously used on laptops, a massive improvement. It feels sturdy to type on thanks to little flex on the body.

3. The touchpad's right click is inconsistent, sometimes I'm pressing from the very right corner yet it still registers as a left click.

4. The hinge is nice and tablet mode, even if the device is not exactly a tablet at this size, is quite useful. However, there is a bug in the display drivers where the device sometimes thinks its in tablet mode when you wake it up from sleep/open the lid. You just have to put it to tablet mode and back to make it work. Hopefully it's fixed soon.

5. Device came preinstalled with some Lenovo crapware but nothing too intrusive. I removed them.

6. Webcam placement is awkward.

>>58970778
It's a good hinge. It works and looks cool.

Oh wait I'm stupid. The tablet mode is simply disabling the keyboard right?

One of the uses for me would be having the laptop standing up(portrait mode) when I'm at my main pc. So I don't want it to change into some weird mode that won't let me do things with my wireless keyboard/mouse.

Not really, and it depends on WHICH 2007 one it is. The later one supports 6gb of ram while the early one only supports 3. It will run anything better then Lion though, even windows IIRC.

MB061LL/B (White), MB062LL/B (White), MB063LL/B (Black) are late '07s.

IF you want an OSX based shitposting machine, get a PPC mac such as a later PowerBook G4 or iBook G4. My '05 iBook is pretty good for shitposting and PPC macs still have actively developed stuff such as web browsers.

I don't really remember anyone bitching about that. It's a lot easier to see how dropping a disk drive wouldn't matter. Getting rid of the function keys just seems retarded to me. I need my esc key. Not to mention it's really inefficient to use the touchbar because my eyes have to come off the screen. Also the processor is a year old. I don't want to pay top dollar for old tech. I also used the keyboard on one and it was awful.
>>

It's might not be the best thing to spend your money on if your budget is under $500, but SSD's are pretty great. And they're more beneficial in a laptop than they would be in a desktop.

The CR-48 has a single core processor, is thick by today's standards, I'm not sure if 6 year old batteries hold up today, modern Chromebooks can have much better screens, etc etc. You can buy a $150 Chromebook and get a much better experience than a 6 year old laptop.

I'll check it out. For the most part, I'm not very interested in a convertible laptop.

I'm mostly siding with the XPS 15 right now due to
>1080p matte screen
I really don't care about anything beyond 1920x1200 if I'm going to have to scale it down, and the matte screen is a plus. i might consider the high res option for the sake of better color accuracy however
>upgradable ram, up to 32gb
so i can do plenty fine with the stock 8, and upgrade in 2-3yrs, so throw in 16 now and call it a day
>quad core 45w i5 as opposed to 15w ultrabook versions.
silly, but it seems kind of weird to buy a dual core processor after quad core has been out for so many years, but it's also like insisting you can't get anything less than the 8 cylinder engine if you buy a Ford Mustang when the turbo 4 is already plenty.
>upgradable storage
>very hesitant to look at any consumer laptops that aren't a Dell XPS or MacBook

If i go with the 13, I'll have to make due with the 8gb (perfectly fine for me for the next 2-3yrs, but i'd like the laptop to last me ~5), and I suppose it will "slow down" sooner than the higher powered xps 15.

For the CPU though, that's on you. The HQ series IS without a doubt stronger than the U series, but I enjoy 10 hours of usage and good temps in my U CPU and it does alright (the 7500U for example is 95% as good as the 7700HQ in single core, half as good in multicore but it also has half the cores)

The XPS has a surprisingly good keyboard imo, nicely spaced keys, a good palm rest where the touchpad doesn't get in the way, and a decent feel to the keypress, all though its a little shallow.

The surface book has a better feel to the keypress, but the keyboard feels super compact, but i have large hands.

YMMV

What do you mean "use it like a laptop"? It has a dedicated keyboard (that can be made very nicely and even made mechanical considering it's JUST a keyboard), it has ports, it has what I'm assuming is a full-power dual core "U" CPU that can be passively cooled
What makes it unsuitable for laptop use? Other than the rare uses where a laptop is just as unsuitable?
>>
>>58978444
Are you trying to trick me? okay I'm taking the bait.
> It has a dedicated keyboard
Are you fucking shitting me? Do you call that a keyboard? Have you touched that thing? My nokia 3210 had a better keyboard than that thing. You will get a hemorrhage if you try to use it for more than a minute.
> it has ports
Now you are just trolling. It has ONE one USB... No usb C, just ONE USB. I can't even comprehend this.
What can you even use this thing for?
A proper laptop is a workstation, that already has a good keyboard, so you don't have to bring a mechanical keyboard with you (as you suggested). As well as multiple ports, so you can actually work on that thing.
If all you do is watch video and browse the web, then sure, get that thing. It's useless for actually working on.
>>
>>58978363
>>58978409

What are you retarded? I literally don't understand your argument besides "its a tablet" and "shitty keyboard".

The i5 and i7 units are fully capable devices, you can do anything on one of these that you could do on a regular clam-shell laptop. And the keyboard on the pro 4 is actually usable now.
>>
>>58978540
The surface doesn't come with a keyboard I'm referring to the foldable sleeves, and at razer makes at least one mech variant.
The last surface I looked at had more ports, maybe they've lowered that number for muh thinness. While it is stupid, many laptops the same size only have one or two ports, which is also stupid.
And like i said, the same CPU that's in top end ultrabooks, it's not just a shitposting machine, it's a normal-power laptop just in a tablet form factor
Whether or not you like the tablet form factor is opinion, but the hardware is definitely there
>>

Have passively cooled toughbook with 10W tdp and under load palmrest temp can reach 60C.

45w passively cooled, no way man, that would be impossible to hold.
>>
>>58978613
Well last generation the U CPUs were 25w, obviously they would accomplish weaker cooling by making it not 45w
>>
>>58978611
No, just no. The hardware is definitely not there. Who cares what CPU is in there?
Running linux and a text editor doesn't require anything fast.

Hardware is the shell, it has to be robust, so you can take it out in the field. It has to have connectors, so you can have serial/usb oscilloscope/whatever else peripherals you might need.
The keyboard has to be great, it's a fancy typing machine after all.
The cpu just has to be fast enough for those tasks, you don't need anything fast or fancy.
What are you even using your laptop for, since you keep talking about the CPU?
>>
>>58978684
It's nice to compress videos from my 4K camera away from home
It's nice to use Ableton and absurd numbers of synth instances without any delay
It's nice to play Dirt Rally at 100fps off the integrated graphics
I mean it is a laptop shoved into a tablet, there's just no argument to that
Low ports is an argument, durability (which the surface does well) is an argument, not these stupid scenarios you keep coming up with
And by the way, USB 3.1, hell even USB 2.0 has enough bandwidth for 8 oscilloscopes on a hub, including realtime data

They do sell atom tablets for like $150, just buy one if you're so mad it isn't weak enough for you

Hardware specs aside, the surface is designed to be a lightweight device that's fast, portable, and versatile on the go. They also make a dock that extends its ports and charges it when you are going to be stationary with it.

Claiming its just a shit device because you specifically have a need for a bunch of random outdated ports, who the fuck even uses serial connectors now? And even if you did need one there are usb to serial adapters, and usb hubs.

You're just shitposting at this point.

I'm offense intended I'm just so confused as to why anyone would choose that as their main os and not just run it on a vm.

I get it if you have the knowledge to learn Kali, but even normies that visit /g/ once seem to think that cheap laptop = Linux

2015 13" Macbook Pro, bought it about a month ago to replace my old 2011 13". 2016 models were too gimped and gimmicky for the price. Really happy with it so far, it's basically just a spec boost from my old machine so not much has changed besides the Retina Display, which is fucking amazing

Probably some piece of shit with garbage input devices that's a pain to use but still sells well to cheap-ass pseudo-tech-savvy people who only know how to judge a computer by the numbers associated with its internal components.

Got it originally for gaming at friends' houses but that hasn't been this thing's main function for a while. (I was pretty proud of this thing being able to run Bioshock Infinite on ultra smoothly, though.)

My friend has a newer model of this, smaller screen but better specs and a backlit keyboard...I kind of want one.
