skylake-x at 44 lanes to CPU has my attention as it could handle 3 real x16 GPUs and potentially 4 with a little PLX magic.

To be honest I'm not sure.
Idea is 4x CAD workstations from 1 full tower is what I'm looking at, paired with a small NAS with a bonded dual 10Gb link.

I've seen the 1-2% loss going from PCIe 3.0 x16 to x8 even with a 1080 and I wanted to eliminate any contention from m.2 by going SAN. I might have to support a 1x USB hub for each station for spacemouse/basic USB sound.

If this won't work out company may have to bite the bullet and go server/firepro/quadro but I don't see these as 100% use stations so I don't want to.

1-2% loss is almost margin of error and only using 32 lanes gives you room for other things. . I figure a better system would be to use maybe a M.2 for the host boot drive and sata SSDs as boot drives for the 4 VMs and the NAS just be a fuckton of mass storage

I hope this idea gets the X299 treatment. I imagine it would look even more amazing if they made a Sabretooth line variant with a complete mobo shroud, but a neutral color scheme like this one. And as a result of being under that line, none of the dumb ROG logos.

This was the only thing at CES that really got my attention this year from a "I'd actually want that" standpoint. Their super stripped down low latency board was interesting too.
