What are some good third party straps for an Apple Watch /g/?
>>
>>58964601

Smart watches are not technology and don't belong on /g/. Please kindly fuck off to /fa/ with your smartwatch bullshit, thank you.

>>58964254
Yeah that is the catch. I was not impressed at first, having to give up a total of six lunch breaks to take this watch into the Seiko ARC. Although I also think the one in Toronto is slightly incompetent, I prefer to use another watchmaker generally but didn't feel like paying him for warranty work.

>>58964548

>>58964601
Not sure about straps but a strap-on would work nicely
>>
>>58964648
That's pretty rude anon. I get that your jealous you can't afford one, but smart watches are the future. Your old watches that can only do one thing are obsolete.

Dad sent me his old Seiko Sports 100.
It has a different bracelet that I'm not fond of.
Thinking of either a rubber strap or a zulu (in black).
Figure a leather band wouldn't look good on this.
Opinions?
>>
>>58964873
Not him but I'm not allowed to have a smartwatch where I work, so for me I'll continue to use a mechanical/digital watch for quite some time.
>>
>>58964944
A leather would be truly disgusting.
>>
>>58964974
Yea, its also beat to hell and back so a brand new leather band would look even more out of place.

Honestly, is like 50% of /wt/ in Southern Ontario or what?

Look at the bright side, once it's out of warranty you can take it to Shane instead.

>return srp773 with misaligned chapter ring
>get sent back one with one slightly less misaligned

Guess the turtle dream is over
>>
>>58965244

Try googling to see if you have any local INDEPENDENT watchmakers and ask them what they would charge to align the chapter ring for you.

It shouldn't cost that much to do, as it isn't that much work.
>>
>>58965283

I'm not really into having to have a $200 watch fixed for $50-100 when it's brand new
>>
>>58964973
Why is your employer such a luddite?

do you guys prefer your watchband to be slightly tight or loose?
It always seems to be one or the other. Having impressions sucks, but having it slide sucks too.
>>
>>58965365
Play shitter games, win shitter prizes.
>>
>>58965365

Fair enough.
>>
>>58965408
just buy a nato strap that you can adjust.
>>
>>58965408
Your wrist expands and contracts during the day. I like it to be tightish, but still comfortable when my wrist is at its biggest, and then looser otherwise.

Allowing it to slide can help keep your wrist cool so you can move it around without it just slammed down against the skin as you sweat against it.

If you wear long sleeve shirts and jackets the watch, even when loose, will generally stay tame and in place.
>>
Who else laying in bed and wishing they were a watch maker?

Are there any modern quartz seiko alternatives to that watch?

SKA369 I suppose.

OK guys, I'm about to take the plunge and buy myself a seamaster, but I can't decide which one.

I'm trying to decide between the normal 300, the planet ocean and the liquid metal. As far as I can tell the planet ocean has an updated movement and a nicer looking bracelet for about 25% more, and the liquid metal is another 75%% more for all titanium. Does anyone know if these steep price increases are justified, or is the standard 300 better value overall.
>>
>>58967295
i want a 32.30.42.21.01.001

the titanium ones are nice but i think the price is just out of my comfort sone

How are Vostok and how do they compare to the Seiko 5?
>>
My F91 rate changed from -0.2 spd to -1.7 spd, what could have caused this change? I'm not wearing it as often, but I don't think quartz is prone to this heavy temperature variances?
>>
>>58967426
Yeah, the planet ocean is really tempting, little bit extra for the updated movement, but I've read it's a lot better that the 2500, and I like the bracelet way more.
>>
>>58967489
I honestly don't know a lot about quartz, but I think temperature variation may be the largest factor in variable timekeeping for quartz watches. Don't quote me on it.

I've been studying for a while and will finally get my diploma soon. And there's a voice in the back of my head that tells me I will only work in that field for a few years at best, and I should take up watchmaking.
My plan is to start working, and tinker with watches on the side to see how I like it. If, as I expect, the jobs I can get aren't fulfilling, I'll try to get in a watchmaking school after saving up a bit of money.

They used to made mechanicals before the quartz phenomenon started. This was literally their last mechanical model which was initially designed for the US Army in the Vietnam war but they never made to sell it to them since they already were fine with Hamilton and Benrus watches. That's why I got surprised to see my watch on this Vietnam era movie.
This model was also known for being the one mcgyver always wore in the first seasons.
It's a pretty cool little plastic case watch, works fine after so many years considering it was a disposable watch, love it.
>>
>>58968566
Did you take a good look though? Might not be a Timex but a Benrus, Hamilton or any other military-pattern watch. These Vietnam-era field watches were more or less standardized in appearance.

It uses a simple pin pallet movement but it seems to be very reliable, I am not really sure if it's shock resistant though.

You can maybe grab one on eBay by looking for Timex Camper Vintage/Mechcanical but they seem to go for +-$100 which is exaggerated since they were like $25 back in the day. I got mine from a German eBay auction for just 14€ shipped, the seller didn't even know what it was.

>>58969049
Pretty sure it's a Timex Camper mechanical, you can even read Timex and see the wave water resistance logo below. I'm pretty familiar with watches from that era and even if most of them were similar this timex was a bit different. The kind of retangular hands it uses and the seconds hand with the dot is also a hint. The case shape and dark khaki green colour is also unique to this model.

So I posted a couple weeks ago asking if anyone is southern Ontario had good luck with radio controlled watches. Anyways I imported a nip casio to test it out for the future.

What you can see here is that it was 12:04 when it set itself. That's pretty good considering it starts at 12:00 So if you're wondering about radio controlled in Hamilton area go ahead. I am on top of the mountain tho

>>58970456

I'm the Southern Ontario guy who told you radio sync works fine here. My Casios usually set themselves at 12:04 am as well, glad to hear it's working for you.

The build quality isn't any thing spectacular. The case back is stainless steel and screwed on. The rest of the body feels kinda plasticy or like soft metal. I actually made marks in it when I changed the strap it was that dentable. The lume is great actually and it also has a light button to activate a backlight. I'm pretty sure it was mineral but I'll get back to you, I'm at work atm

No, you ignorant slut, he was pointing out that Mondaines and Skagens are massively overpriced dogshit because they are made as cheaply as humanly possible in China and market up massively to pawn off on suckers like you.

High quality fairly priced quartz watches exist. Casio, Seiko, Citizen and others make reasonably quality and valued quartz watches.

Maybe because the normies that buy them have no taste or semblance of an idea of what true quality is. Let's say a group of people eat dogshit their whole lives and have never tried anything better or complained because they know no better. And then you decide to join in because you've never eaten before and assume it's nice. That doesn't make it gourmet

Are you unironically autistic? A Ferrari has less miles per gallon than a VW that doesn't make it cheaper. It's about the levle of craftsmanship and engineering (but moreover design for cheaper autos) that goes into the complex movement of tens if not hundreds of parts that makes it more expensive, not the accuracy
>>
>>58971742
>literally never heard a complaint about the build quality of those bands.
Okay then, here's mine. As a watchmaker I've worked on a few Skagens, most were simple battery changes but one was a drying job since the dumb whore went over the watches WR rating. I can say they won't fall apart but they're definitely not worth the money, not in build quality nor features like WR, lume, materials, model of the movement etc.
>>
>>58971784
Cheers mate I appreci8 your reply
>>
>>58971808
They're considered more luxurious more in part to the name, materials, and design than just movement. Design and materials always make up more for luxury as modern replication of movements tends to turn things moot.

>>58971827
Alright, an actual explanation, thank you. What sucks is I can't actually find where mondaine makes its stuff, but judging by the price it's probably not by swiss folk. Danke.

>>
>>58971809

>>
>>58971874
Only clueless bastard care for expensive materials that look gaudy as fuck 80% of the time. And design doesn't make a watch expensive look at the Rolex submariner for instance, basic design kept the same or near enough for decades with thousands of imitations and "homages" which are borderline replicas which are cheaper not because of design or materials but due to the workhorse and classic movement of the Rolex
>>
>>58971902
The reason theres homages isn't because of hte movement, it's the looks.
It's why so many cars look similar, but I agree on the gaudiness.

>>58971696

>>58971954

>>
>>58971919
Yeah you are right about the looks being the reason for a homage, absolutely, but that doesn't negate the fact that looks don't matter in haute horologie. What we're all missing here is finishing. That makes a watch expensive. Skagen has dogshit finishing sure but seiko 5s are as good as it gets subjectively for the price range. Finishing is why the AP Royal Oak quartz looks like shit and has a quartz movement but still sells for thousands

Got this on sale for ~350 pounds, like the looks, but it's gaining exactly 20s/day according to the test I did on the first day. I reset it the day before yesterday at 19, wore it yesterday, didn't wear it today until 16 or so, when I checked it today at 19 it was ~30 seconds ahead. Should I wait more for the movement to settle before taking it to a watchmaker for regulation?

Zero magnets that I know of. I could send it back, but 20s is juust withing spec, and getting the watch here was a huge pain I'd rather not go through again. Not only did it take much longer than they said it would (though this is kind of understandable given that they had a sale and their watches were half off), but the courier showed up, couldn't find the address, and just fucked off back to the warehouse. I contacted the shipping company through their form to tell them the correct address and I was told it would be sent again. The next day I call their HQ and they tell me they didn't have a shipping address or phone number. I give it to them yet again, and I get the package the following day, two hours late.

Around here many luxury brands are destroyed by copies. If you wear a Rolex people will instantly assume it was bought on a holiday from a street vendor. Many here call it Lollex. Same with luxury handbags, even if you have the genuine article people will think it was cheap copy you bought abroad.

The other problem with Rolex is that is simply screams mid life crisis. I'd rather get a JLC.

http://www.ablogtowatch.com/watchmaker-compares-omega-seamaster-timepieces-caliber-1120-2500-8500-movements/

Basically, Omega's implementation of the co-axial escapement is fucked. If it isn't serviced extremely regularly and EXTREMELY precisely oiled (even though the whole fucking point of the co-axial escapement was to not need lubrication) the escapement will start eating itself.

A bone stock ETA 2892-A2 Top will be as accurate while being 10x as reliable, but Omega went ahead with their butchered cuck-axial implementation anyway because marketing.

"I think the co-axial is a lot more sensitive. Omega use oil on it George Daniels (inventor of the co-axial) didn’t. And it’s a microscopic amount, I mean you actually have to use a microscope. If it’s not correctly oiled, you won’t get your four years out of it. The amount of oil we’re using is so minute that it makes the applicationa rather difficult job. If you use too much oil, it’s going to stop the watch, or it’s going to run off the back of the teeth and stop the watch. If you put too little oil, it is going to result in stoppage as well. It has to be perfect, and it has to be on a certain spot on the teeth too: right in the middle. There’s a lot more to it than the conventional Swiss lever."

Consider the implications of this and consider what happens if too much oil, too little oil, or the wrong kind of oil is used, or the implications of letting it dry out due to not servicing it on time.

they're expensive cases that roll around simulating hand movement for when you're not wearing your watch
>>
Here is a comment from Al Archer (one of the best watchmakers working today) on how extremely sensitive Omega co-axial escapements are to servicing and how they can be damaged EXTREMELY easily if they are not serviced regularly or correctly:

http://forums.watchuseek.com/f2/philosophically-whats-remaining-point-coaxial-after-everything-experienced-question-786804-7.html#/topics/786804?page=1&_k=s7t7f8

"One other thing I will say is make sure whoever services a watch you may own with one of these knows what they are doing and has had the training. The fact is the watch will run great even if the oiling on the escapement is not done correctly, but it will cause significant wear on some fairly expensive parts that will cost you down the road. This is one reason I refused to service these until a slot opened up at the training in NJ. Even just moving the balance wheel like you would in a lever escapement watch can do a lot of damage in an instant, so these are not watches to learn as you go."

12mm isn't all that thick, but it's also going to depend on the size of your wrist and where that thickness comes from. Thickness that comes from a curve in the crystal is much less significant than a more tuna can-like watch case. Because domes of crystals don't add quite as much thickness visually, and even tend to slip under a cuff more easily like a thinner watch would. For example, the Orient Bambinos are around 12mm I believe, but they should wear pretty thin for their size.

Thanks but alas I have bitchwrists and a 10 mm looks just about good enough
I was looking at the snkk65 (which Is12mm without a domed crystal) but have turned my attention to the snk355 due to the aforementioned thickness
Both have silver sunburst dials which I adore but the snkk65 has a more polished case and the snk355 isn't as shapely as seen in pic related. I'm unsure of the lug to lug length of the snkk65 too so it may over hang as my current shitter fits perfect seen here

I'm so confused desu and I'm certain my first auto will be one of these two I'm sure of that
>>
>>58977598
Lug to lug is worth finding out, as it's probably one of the most important measurements when it comes it being too big or correctly sized. The other part of that would be how curved the watch is. The more it curves, the longer the lug to lug can be without creating overhang.

There is no common measuring techniques for the radius and types of curves and angles built into watch lugs afaik. Just need to go with pictures.

Datejust for sure

Yachtmaster definitely.
Sub depends on whos wearing it/how theyre wearing it. Its so ubiquitous

Can you attach a cyclops to a normal crystal?
>>
I want to get a Casio F91W but I dislike that there's no timer function. Are there any other digital watches with a similar footprint that have that as a feature?
>>
>>58983051
The cyclops on rolexes is just glued on. So yeah, if you managed to find a cyclops somewhere, and had the proper adhesive you could do it.

With all the praise seiko gets you kind of tend to forget that well over half of all seiko 5 designs are god-awful mall crap.
>>
>>58983051
You need a special type of glue and a ultraviolet lamp to dry it. But yes.

The Speedmaster FOIS, which is basically the same as the blue limited edition, actually costs slightly less than the Professional, probably because it comes on a strap instead of a bracelet. But Omega slapped on some blue paint and went ahead and doubled the price.
>>
>>58984245
This. I'd love to be able to get a FOIS on bracelet with hesalite crystal.

I'd say most seiko's are mallcrap. I don't know why /g/ rates them so highly except for budget reasons.

I really dont give a shit what the price tag says. This is the prettiest watch i've ever seen, much prettier than any other speedmaster imo. I will probably never own it, but i love everything about it.

Well, The Citizen has a better movement while not being that much more expensive, though I've heard the finishing is not as good, so it depends on what you're after.
