Dropped my 7 and had the microphone fail, but was fixed in 3-4 days, and the service was superb.
My 4s lasted 5 years without a hitch.
In all I would say yes. Also the glass and back coating is really rugged on the 7.

you don't have to use the fingerprint. the home button works fine. and i had no issue with the fingerprint scanner anyways.
to answer you op, they are reliable. the worst thing about them is when the bloated new os comes and your phone cannot handle it, like my 4s couldn't handle all the gay transparent colorful shit it turns into a really slow phone. if i had the chance to downgrade i would be using my 4s for another 4 year probably. so yeah, i think they are solid as shit.
