I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

creating a proper chroma upscaling test video/image is difficult because all the usual video codecs have some sort of chroma offset. and actually, jpeg seems to have a different offset compared to mpeg2, vc-1 and h264.

not sure if either mpv or madvr handle all these different chroma offsets correctly. i suppose it's possible they might just have hard coded everything to the "usual" (mpeg2, vc-1, h264) chroma offset. in that case a jpeg 4:2:0 test image might not be a good way to test chroma upscaling. using an mpeg2 or h264 video is probably better, but when creating the video, proper care needs to be taken to make sure chroma offset is applied correctly.

No, Richard, it's 'Linux', not 'GNU/Linux'. The most important contributions that the FSF made to Linux were the creation of the GPL and the GCC compiler. Those are fine and inspired products. GCC is a monumental achievement and has earned you, RMS, and the Free Software Foundation countless kudos and much appreciation.

Following are some reasons for you to mull over, including some already answered in your FAQ.
One guy, Linus Torvalds, used GCC to make his operating system (yes, Linux is an OS -- more on this later). He named it 'Linux' with a little help from his friends. Why doesn't he call it GNU/Linux? Because he wrote it, with more help from his friends, not you. You named your stuff, I named my stuff -- including the software I wrote using GCC -- and Linus named his stuff. The proper name is Linux because Linus Torvalds says so. Linus has spoken. Accept his authority. To do otherwise is to become a nag. You don't want to be known as a nag, do you?

Potplayer is really the only option, easy loop segments and adjust on the fly with keys. Not like VLC with dodgy clicks of a mouse button.
Web addons for Firefox/Chrome for youtube playback(don't use myself)

>>
>>58964201
mpv, arguably, is less complex in how you configure it. You literally open a single plain text file and gain access to every option immediately in the form of OPTION=VALUE. Though the negative here is that it can be rather daunting looking through the manpages for the options you're interested in.

MPC-HC requires you navigate the GUI submenus to find the specific options you look for, though with the advantage that because everything is already written out, the application itself tells you what options are available.

From the point of a Windows user, the difference can be summed up as how you access the configurable options and modify them.

The backend for the two players, on the other hand, are very different from one another. mpv uses ffmpeg/libav as its' media decoding backend, which is free software, allowing the player to be ported to any hardware/software platform that can satisfy its' dependencies.
MPC-HC uses DirectShow filters, which basically locks it to be Windows only.

In an out-of-the-box setup the two players are pretty much the same though.

How do I use this?
https://mpv.io/manual/master/#command-interface-video-speed-correction

I have a poorly made .flv file with a/v desync issues. The video track seems to be stretched out twice as long as the audio track (I know this because the audio track ends halfway into the video).

Doubling the video speed sounds reasonable, so I put a keybind in input.conf to run 'set video-speed-correction 2.0'. But the OSD shows "Failed to set property 'video-speed-correction' to '2.0'" when I trigger it.

>1. On Windows, do I just use the normal program or would I benefit from a GUI?
Normal program.
>2. Where do I find the config file?
You make a text file and rename the extension from .txt to .conf
>3. How do I achieve better quality (AMD) ?
Just use opengl-hq without hw decoding
>4. Can some post madvr/MPC vs MPV comparison shots
No. Do it yourself with your own videos. If you don't care about the features, then go back to mpc-hc and leave this thread.
>>
>>58972368
1. Just use the default program, I don't know of any windows gui's that are up to date, you wouldn't really benefit from them either because all you have to do is either set MPV as default or drag the video file onto mpv.exe, you can customize it easily with input.conf

2. just put mpv.conf and input.conf next to mpv.exe, you could also put them in %appdata%/mpv

3. Just put this in your config for now
profile=opengl-hq
opengl-backend=dxinterop
opengl-pbo=yes

video-sync=display-resample

Should I set cscale? Should I keep the antiringing thing on or use igv's antiringing shader instead?

And in regards to >>58973508 and >>58973479, I just go to haasn's github page and "scan" some examples. And I just find that
1. I see no difference between ewa_lanczos and ewa_lanczossharp

So if I prefer sharpness I can just

You have gotten it wrong, ewa_lanczos is an alias of Jinc, they are literally the same exact thing, look here, https://github.com/mpv-player/mpv/blob/master/video/out/filter_kernels.c#L358

{{"ewa_lanczos",    3,  jinc, .resizable = true}, .polar = true, .window = "jinc"},
{{"ewa_hanning", 3, jinc, .resizable = true}, .polar = true, .window = "hanning" },
{{"ewa_ginseng", 3, jinc, .resizable = true}, .polar = true, .window = "sinc"},

// Radius is based on the true jinc radius, slightly sharpened as per
// calculations by Nicolas Robidoux. Source: Imagemagick's magick/resize.c
{{"ewa_lanczossharp", 3.2383154841662362, jinc, .blur = 0.9812505644269356,
.resizable = true}, .polar = true, .window = "jinc"},

// Similar to the above, but softened instead. This one makes hash patterns
// disappear completely. Blur determined by trial and error.
{{"ewa_lanczossoft", 3.2383154841662362, jinc, .blur = 1.015,
.resizable = true}, .polar = true, .window = "jinc"},

// Very soft (blurred) hanning-windowed jinc; removes almost all aliasing.
// Blur paramater picked to match orthogonal and diagonal contributions
{{"haasnsoft", 3.2383154841662362, jinc, .blur = 1.11, .resizable = true},
.polar = true, .window = "hanning"},
