I bought an SSD and now I use my internal 3TB HDD for animu + media storage mostly.

Is it safe to put the HDD to sleep when not in use? I'd like to prolong the life of the HDD drive and keep my media from getting destroyed.

I've read some blogs/opinions that say that it's better to leave the HDD spinning because HDDs die from power-on/power-off or spin-up/spin-down cycles. Some sites claim that HDDs die from thermal expansion so it's best to keep them spinning all the time.

Then, some sites say that HDDs die from bearings getting destroyed from constant spinning so it's good to put them to sleep.

Who's right? What do you do?

If there are conflicting reports, the answer is usually that it doesn't matter

Well, it matters to me because I don't like the noise of the HDD but would tolerate it if it extended the life of my HDD.

PS: that rule of yours doesn't even make any sense.

Most HDDs turn off as a power save feature these days. IMO, leaving it on would be the best way to keep it alive. Put sound insulation in your case if the noise bothers you.

Simply fuck off.

what if you bump it? and what about energy waste?

I've punched the fuck out of computers while their in use to no affect. I'm pretty sure bumping it the lest of the problems you have.

You'd have to bump it hard enough for the arm to hit the disk. Difficult to do more than you think. Yes you're wasting electricity but mechanical devices last longer when operating for a long period of time vs on and off in my opinion.

But there's no for sure answer. Failure rate on hard drives are very slim these days. There are 30 year old hard drives still working today, then there's others that crap out in a year. The more simple the hard drive you can possibly increase your odds. Like getting a 5400rpm instead of a 6200rpm. A 1 platter vs 2 or 3. Things like that.

Both are right, to a degree.

Excessive number spin-up/spin-down cycles will kill your HDD quickly. That's why laptop HDDs are often rated for an order of magnitude more cycles, as spinning down is an easy way to save power. Desktop HDDs aren't nearly as resilient, because battery life isn't a concern and they can spin longer.

That being said, excessively long spinning is bad for the bearings and other parts. If there's nothing being read or written for an extended period of time, keeping the drive running is a waste.

I think you should trust the defaults for now, but take note of your usage patterns and optimize for them as needed.

Constant spinning will start being a problem for your HDD after 5+ years of 24/7 spinning.
Every single time you your disk spins up, you have a head crash. EVERY SINGLE TIME.
There you go now you make the decision yourself

you have MIGHT* a head crash
