Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

The overall feel of this computer, whether it is the hinges or the keyboard or whatever, completely puts everything else made before or since to shame. It's worth keeping because it is proof that, when they put their minds to it, Lenovo can build something amazing.

I bougt this T430 about a week ago. Battery life is pretty much non-existent, so I wanted to buy a new one. Does anyone have any experience with the Superb Choice brand? Are unofficial batteries any good, or should I just buy an official lelnovo one.
Also, is the keyboard mod really worth it? I wanted to try it out, but I am too lazy to do it.

Sure. Ideally check that it'll be faster than your current ram (if you're still going to be using it) to make sure it won't end up being a mild performance loss, but chances are newer stuff will be much the same.

Anon, how bad of an idea to buy a new T460s?
I do want/need a new model and that's the only one of the actual Thinkpad series available here that won't require me to sell a leg and an arm.
>>
>>58940186
If that's the case then you might as well have it disabled anyway. It's more thatrecording a conversation can easily more harmful than getting a picture of your face, which will identify who's using the computer and where at worst, unless you jerk off right in front of your webcam.

>>58940527
Something LXDE or just a straight WM will work best, or even just something like puppy linux. As others have said anything will run like shit, but it's not like practicality matters.

>>58940615
If you're worried about cost then buying second-hand is surely a better bet, even if you have to buy from overseas.
The T460s isn't that bad as a laptop, just keep in mind your options for expanding the battery are limited compared to a T460, though if you don't need battery life it's pretty solid.

If these prices are in USD then I don't think they're too great. I guess the main ones to look at are the X230, T732 because it might be a nice tablet laptop though I have no idea what those things are actually like, and the HP *60 and *70 models.
>>
>>58943475
Yes, it's in USD.
The devices look fine visually, at least for the models listed in the pic.
I was thinking of using Hiren's boot CD to test the hardware.
I was thinking of HP 8560w, to use it as stationary and use the T420 instead.
But for that price I can get new laptop, with decent specs.

What about the X201? it's i7 with 128GB SSD.
>>
>>58943588
I wouldn't really bother with the store then, you can probably find better prices on eBay, unless buying locally is worth the difference to you.

>I was thinking of HP 8560w, to use it as stationary and use the T420 instead.
It'd probably do a good job of that. The thinkpad equivalent is the W520/W530 so have a look at those too.

>But for that price I can get new laptop, with decent specs.
If you're just keeping it in the same place then than an old workstation will probably still come out on top. A decent CPU from that time with good cooling goes a long way, though the same probably doesn't go for graphics.

>What about the X201? it's i7 with 128GB SSD.
I'm not a big fan of that generation just because the CPUs shit out heat and it leaves my T410 a bit impotent. The X230 is going to be an all round better machine save for the SSD, and maybe the keyboard if you prefer classic ones.

The x230 is much better in other ways than just the CPU performance (i.e. HD4000 graphics which have DX11 support, 22nm, 2 usb3.0 (up from 0 or 1 on the x220) and it'll be in better nick overall.) Downside is you'll want to replace the keyboard with that of the x220.

only modern use is more USB 3.0 (but you have to find an adapter of actual quality for it to be anything like native) and eGPU setups. Also WWAN if you've already put an mSATA in and used the slot.

Not that the GPU isn't the limit, but the CPU is also used heavily

Nah, your Peryn would kick the shit out of the L7100. This processor barely has more power than the Pentium 4 I used to use back in the day. The computer is noticeably sluggish with Aero enabled, 1080p videos (and some 720p ones) are just not going to happen, and the cursor lags behind as you type on certain web pages. Although that is more the modern web's fault than the X300. Nevertheless I feel as if my phone has more processing power. But dat keyboard.

From what I hear the X301 is pretty much just the X300 with a bit more power and DisplayPort.

The W520 has USB3. The main thing it loses over the T430 is battery life and portability.

The newer TN should be less terrible than on the X201 but still awful. X201 gets 16:10 though.

Mostly personal preference up till the point where you need to use the shitty new Home/End/Delete keys

Newer CPUs should use less power though the difference with light usage will be minor. Lenovo's estimates on battery life are about 50% more on the X230.

If you need any sort of performance out of your laptop then the X230 is well worth it, but otherwise the X201 should be a reasonable shitposting machine.

1. how the hell does a nas limit the portability of the thing?
you keep it at home and it should never need to be moved.
2. how often do you really need 1TB of on device storage? Just get a 500gb ssd and a 500-1TB external hdd for when you really need to move things around.
3. when have you ever seen a pcie hard drive?

>that was never an advertised feature, that was just a side effect of finally updating the design.
No, I don't mean that swapping was an intended feature. I mean that they removed the dedicated volume buttons for no justifiable reason, and that made the --40 models and later electrically incompatible with the old keyboards.

If you don't need the DVD drive then you can swap it out with a $5 caddy that allows you to have two 2.5" drives. Swapping out the original drive is as easy as it gets anyway since it's just in it's own compartment behind one screw.

The problem with Lenovo's website is that it isn't even dynamic or responsive, most pages are effectively static but they I still find it a nuisance that some of the products pages seem to dick around so much in the background that until the pages is loaded completely; anchors don't want to work and the entire page goes white for half a second just before it finally finishes loading.

To copy the MBR, boot and root partitions and then format the rest of the unallocated space as ext4 and modify the fstab to mount it as /home then copy the dot files over to the mSATA SSD, then delete the rest of the partitions and resizing it, then modify the fstab to have the /home/Downloads on the HDD.

Anyone did something like that?

I'm going to buy 1600x900 display for my T420.
I'm looking at:
N140FGE-LA2 Rev.C2
N140FGE-L32 Rev.C1
LTN140KT12
What should I choose?
>>
>>58959750
From what I've seen the most widely availabe configuration is a 2.4GHz i5 dual core. In what world is that not sufficient for modern computing? I know the CPU is old but I'm not talking multiple VMs here. The X201 hasn't been designed for power users. It's an office machine. You can write stuff on it. You can do spreadsheet. It can play 1080p YouTube videos. What more do you expect from a 12" subnotebook?
>>
>>58959836
>You can write stuff on it. You can do spreadsheet. It can play 1080p YouTube videos. What more do you expect from a 12" subnotebook?

So, it's not great. Just a normal laptop.

A normal laptop with better build quality than most laptops on the market today, including Thinkpads and Macbooks, at a better price than anything you can buy new.

it's same shit that 768p is. I mean, if these are the factory ones. I've heard that they put good 14" panel in x1 carbon and alienware mx14 r2 that fit into t420, so you might search for those ( 140WD2 or something like that)

Damn, there's always something to ramp up the price. If it has a good CPU, the screen is shit. If the screen is good, it has HDD. If it has SSD, it's got the screen scratched... I just want a 3rd gen i5, SSD, 8GB RAM Thinkpad with a decent screen under 300€, but it's turning out to be impossible.

ask seller if he will ship wherever you are. That's roughly 270 euro. I'm sure sending it to anywhere in europe is less than 30 euro http://allegro.pl/lenovo-t430-intel-i5x2-53ghz-8gb-ssd-usb-3-0-gw-i6616582081.html

Well, maybe they will, but it'll cost extra. Also if they will send with FedEx, the customs will hold it and ask me make customs clearance myself (no idea why, but I've been there), it's just not worth it.

I better choose something between
N140FGE-LA2 Rev.C2
N140FGE-L32 Rev.C1
LTN140KT12
and would gladly use the less shitty one.

how's that - is that a matter of some local customs etc regulations, or is it that many ebay sellers just wont send to russia?
>>

Almost every seller will not ship it. People are using 'virtual' mail adresses (en.polexp.com for example), but they cost extra.
And I can't even imagine the delivery time.

well Arrandale is perfectly usable unless you wanna do some real heavy graphics work or something. And 16:10 is comfy indeed. You might want to hunt for an X201s, they've 900x1440 screens, but are rare and hence can be pricey.
Anyhow, imvho it's not wise to pay for an X201 more than half of what you would pay for an X230 or some two thirds of X220. X201s are different story, they're so rare that if you really want one you can't be picky about the price.

I'm tempted to buy z61p? It's only 35$
it has 1900x1200p screen, but there's a problem with backlight of it. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Sounds like an easy fix. Besides that, visually it looks ok. On the other hand, it might be too old for modern use (t7200). What do you think?

So, I'm having overheatting problems with my x220T. I already cleaned it and reaply thermal paste/pad, reinstalled Windows (tried in linux too, almost the same temps) and I'm pretty sure 80°C+ in iddle isn't right, anything that I should check or thinkpad is dying?

You must be doing something insane.

There is a bug with 16gb of memory + an eGPU but if you were doing that you'd've mentioned it so I've got no idea.

One way to reduce heat is to cap the max processor frequency so it can't go into turbo boost, but 80 degrees at idle is insane. It must be fucked somehow, must've applied the paste wrong or not put enough pressure on the heatsink.
>>
>>58936826
I can get a T440p with 256gb ssd, i7 4710, 16gb ram for 320€. Problem is there is a bootup password. Any idea on how to remove it ?
>>
Do thinkpad batteries use 18650 cells?

My 6 cell x230t battery is a 6 cell rated at 6600 mah. Can I replace the cells with 3000 or 4200 mah 18650s and get insane life out of the same area? Or am I dumb?
>>
>>58963270
The 16gb I put were to see if it was the same (I usually have 8gb installed), I underclocked the memories but not change at all with the temps and yea I don't use eGPU. I'm pretty sure that I didn't messed up with the paste, I cleaned it and repasted because getting the temps, not otherwise. Plus isn't the first time but I've never had any overheatting problems, the only way that I can really use it at the moment is on "Power Saver Mode" and it stays on 40-50ish, as before in regular use.

I've spent 2 days now trying to "solve" this problem, but I got no options left even the fan spins just as new. That's why I wanted to ask for any ideas here
>>
>>58963544
Heatpipe may be defective? Is the heatsink polished at all?
>>
>>58963544
Actually keep an eye on the processor clock, "idle" isn't the same as minimum processor use. 85 degrees is about what you should expect for a x230 going like the clappers, it's what mine does when running a game with 100% cpu & gpu.
>>
>>58945550

Yeah I looked but it stays at 10-20 tops, and if I try to run any 1080p video or any game like this war of mine or something light it just crashes at 95°C+

>>
>>58963701
pretty much every chinkpad after xx30 series is shit
>>
>>58963701
anything past the 3rd gen can no longer fit the classic keyboard and instead has something mechanically not much worse, but through stupid key placement and shedding of features entirely less special and worth buying a Thinkpad for. May as well get one of the fancier Dells or a Fujitsu that'll have a better balanced feature set if the keyboard's no longer a selling point.
