.NET is the most powerful enterprise application development platform. Here's why:
1. Easy to develop applications quickly for Windows.
2. Many languages to choose from that can work with other languages seamlessly. If you like C++ you can build libraries with it for a C# application.
3. C# (aka the flagship language of .NET) is an extremely powerful strongly typed language that has a C like syntax. It's a higher level managed language that still has some of the nice features of lower level languages.
4. MSIL. MSIL is what make point 2 just werk. It's an assembly like language that .NET runs on after compiling. You can use C# to dynamically create and load libraries at runtime. This means creating applications that are strongly typed all the way through.
5. XAML/C# is probably the best application design tool. It's flexible, robust, and let's developers skip the boring work of programming interfaces (look at swing if you want to know true pain).
.NET might not be the best thing at any one thing, but it's the jack of all trades for Windows development.
