hey /g just posted this in old thread before bump limit...i hope that someone can give me some cool direction here...

so i have a question and was directed here, not trying to be a personal tech service question here as a preview... i am backing up and reformatting my MacBook air 2011 4gbram 250gbflash hard drive, and i'm possibly looking for some tidbit of info regarding what best to install to gain some power over my system, been looking at arch but also vmware esxi? like a hypervisor? kind of lost but very interested in what my best options could be with this fresh install, even if it's just pairing down os x, looking for optimization and streamlining, basically want to learn a ton of programming and do some school stuff, web browser and email... the more i think about it the more i think just OS X with a vmware fusion install and then playing around until i want to dual boot might be the solution but any information you guys can further offer will be much appreciated

thanks

I'm a bit new to linux and I'm a bit confused about why there are three bin directories (/bin /sbin /usr/bin). In my installation /bin is a symbolic link to /usr/bin anyway so I'm guessing it's just a legacy thing. Is there a reason behind it?
>>
>>58923051
Excuse me Mr. Robot, I didn't quite get what you mean but maybe you say you want to test GNU/Linux. Any virtual machine you already know how just works.

For first distro, maybe try go with Elementary, or Ubuntu MATE. They are both similar to your current OS.

I've been distro hopping a little bit over the past few days. I'm trying to get a nice distro on my laptop which strikes a balance between being stable while also giving me room to tinker, (an intermediate distro of sorts).

I've tried OpenSUSE which works but it doesn't quite co-operate right with my nvidia card. Does anyone know of any distros which fit this area of working well, giving me some room to tinker while not choking on NVIDIA cards? GNOME 3 as the DE would be nice as well (don't laugh.)

>>
>>58923254
because they decided that having four separate directories for binaries was illogical so they moved everything into /usr/bin and replaced /bin:/sbin:/usr/sbin with symlinks to /usr/bin. They did the same thing with /lib - moved it all to /usr/lib. I don't know why. Because they want to be different? Because they think they are better than decades of convention? Because now that we use systemd, we don't have to worry about trying to access directories that might be on separate partitions or some other bullshit technical reason like that?

why not Slackware? very stable OOTB. lots of room to tinker on account of having a simple init system, simple package management, etc. NVIDIA - you probably didn't install the right proprietary driver? but there are SlackBuilds for that, just takes a bit of learning and getting used to.

It has been shilled heavily for the past several threads so you might be able to pick up some useful key infos from there.
and read the slackbook, all the documentation (there is plenty of it packaged with the distribution), poke around in the various config files, etc. as long as you follow the instructions until know what you're doing, you'll be fine.

I recently got an x230 thinkpad and decided to give Linux a whirl. I picked Solus for whatever reason, it looked nice and friendly. Now I'm having hell getting the onboard sd card reader to work. When I card is inserted, it recognized the device, and the capacity of the card. But it comes up with unknown contents, and refuses to touch it beyond that. I got it to format the card once, but then it goes back to unknown before I can actually mount it. Anyone have any experience with this? All the information I've found is deprecated and claims that the drivers and device should all work fine > kernal 2.6.17 (solus is using 4.9.7)

I need some help from some audio pros.

I'd like to setup my PC for podcasting. I have a friend who's a really cool dude and I'd like to record our chats and make podcasts out of them.

From researching /csg/, I've decided to pick up a cheap chink microphone that sounds really good. I've also decided to buy a USB audio interface that also has power for the microphone. The USB audio interface seems to work fine under Linux.

From googling, it seems that Skype works well for actually connecting people and this buddy of mine has Skype installed and knows how to use it.

Now, how do I set up audio interfaces? How do I setup things on my end so that the person I'm gonna be talking to can hear me but won't hear himself (i.e. I won't be sending him his own signal back) and yet I'll be able to record both of us?

What types of tools do I need? How do I set this up? I don't think this is way too complicated to accomplish so it should be possible, right?

Help much appreciated!

How do you lock root login but allow semi access to it via Root Terminal that prompts a gksu password dialog and opens a terminal? I had this on my old distro, but I had to install a new one. I just ran passwd -l root but now I can't access root terminal even through the gksu terminal.

I think I need to run a liveCD and mount in my drive to enable root again, but I don't know why it didn't work.

Is there a better way of doing this? My user isn't in the sudoers, I don't like using that, I prefer to open a root specific terminal from a password dialog and not allow people to guess root passwords.

Fuck, I had this even on my server, it worked on Debian, but won't work on slackware for some reason. Maybe I'm doing something wrong?

There are some distributions that work in single-user mode.

Puppy is a good example. You're always logged it as root
>>
>>58926893
I would like that too to be honest, I started using it since yesterday coming from Debian, it isn't that bad after moving most of my configs from there since I'm using Xfce.

You might find some videos on how to use SlackBuilds. I use SlackBuilds.org and pkgs.org. If it's not in pkgs.org, it may be in SlackBuilds.org

I think it's one of these OSs that are close to BSD but not completely BSD in a sense that you have a little bit more control over your packages. I think there is a Debian-like package manager out there, but I'm not using it, maybe I'll try later since I just started with it.

The only thing I don't like it for SlackBuilds for now is that you need t download the executable first, tar -xf it then wget the source from the website. I don't know why it's not in one tarball. Maybe there's a way out, but I'll find out later on.

>>58926915
Not really, that should make it work. Are you getting a Boot: when you start? That might mean that it didn't install right. Is it EFI or UEFI? Are you doing it correctly? If it's a new laptop it might be non-legacy EFI so check your BIOS maybe.

Kill yourself.
I don't even pity the other person if he actually installs Slackware and then comes back complaining that it doesn't work. It only proves that he's an idiot as well because he didn't take 3 minutes to research something as simple as "which distribution should I use".

this is all too common, one of you installs a more complicated distro and thinks that everyone else's needs can be filled with that distro

if were truly about helping people with linux, we shouldnt be reccommending slackware to someone extremely new(literally looking for an easy install) and then patting ourselves on the back for it

no, PKGBULDS (or SlackBuilds, or any other package building scripts) contain what you'd do to build a package that can be installed by the package manager. This means installing in into a fakeroot, moving any documentation or libraries or anything else to a distro-specific location (if necessary), adding distro-specific default configuration (if necessary), creating whatever metadata the distro-specific package system uses for information, dependency-checking, whatever, and then packing it into whatever file format the distro uses.

It's not just configure && make && make install

it can be

while a pkgbuild is a bash script, it's not standalone, it just sets some variables and functions
you don't need to worry about using things like fakeroot directly, makepkg does that

there's no much you need to specify, probably just the package name, version, and architecture(s), along with the package() function, which can contain literally only "configure && make && make install" and still end up with a usable package

of course on more complex packages, you might have things like a custom service unit, desktop files, icons, distro-specific adjustments and locations, etc

Depends only on your paranoia level.

An up-to-date system is usually enough, but it doesn't protect you from some tard who finds a bug and abuses it without reporting it. Here either Common Sense or Jails are the solution.

>>58932129
Just use KeePassX for those and keep the file in a pendrive. Also use kpx to create passwords for you.

Which one is "bad" isn't the point. The point was just blindly accepting something without any proof or arguments. The point would still stand if he was told the opposite.

Anyone interested in a superficial opinion can watch this interesting presentation.

not an X hater, but one of the things that always gave me a kick about "security" in X, at least in the physical access sense, is the fact that in most cases any "locking" mechanism can be bypassed CTRL-ALT-F1

Look up ClamAV.

Great tool to scan shady Windows software (you obviously should never run shady Linux software), email attachments and that USB flash drive your friend gave to you.

Developed by Cisco (that might be an issue for someone so just saying).

Bear in mind it's not a real-time scanner like you get on Windows, but that's a good thing.

It doesn't depend on systemd, it just uses systemd's dbus API. Stop bending words and going out of your way to twist the truth just to have a reason to be upset.

dbus was usurped by systemd at the very start, there is no dbus without systemd.
>>
>>58932581
>>58932443

Actually it does depend on libsystemd which would only be used for systems which already use systemd.

rsync -av --delete

But why?
I mostly like not having to manually figure out which of my computers has the most up-to-date version of which Document. Just rsync the entire folder back and forth and I'm done.

Battery life doesn't depend on your distro. Install anything you want and don't use programs that suck on your battery. Run powertop to find such programs and/or enable powersaving modes.

I backup my media drive once a month or so. I don't add shit to my backup but I do add and delete movies etc. in my media drive. If I watch a movie and delete it, I want rsync to automatically delete it from my backup next time.

rsync -avh --progress --delete /media /backupdrive

I use a 2TB external drive for backups. Not the best solution but it werks..

this is exactly the reaction I had, except when I looked at it, it was still called "Sorcerer" and it was an unfinished pile of shit with a 1997-style website design that used green text on a dark tiled background with star/swirl patterns
and it broke constantly
