>Replace broken HDD in wife's laptop

>Can't connect to internet because no wireless drivers
>No ethernet adapter drivers

That's fucking it. I'm installing Elementary OS and being done with this shit
>>
DL them with a wired connection. Or put them on a CD.
>>
>>58909466
Just install the drivers manually.
>>
>>58909480
>No ethernet drivers
Nope.
Yes I could use a CD, if this were 2006 and I still had blank CD's around. As it stands I'm in a new decade and haven't needed those in quite some time.
I tap out. Windows is no longer for me. I'm starting the conversion
>>
>>58909466
Sounds like you had no business attempting to repair the laptop.

False, windows 7 dectects a vast range of hardware automatically. Unless your wife's pc is before 1990 this post is b8.
Prove me wrong
>>
>>58909547
Before you reinstall, you get the drivers necessary from another system or the same system if possible and put it on a flash drive. This usually includes just Ethernet drivers as everything else will install from that.

You're blaming your lack of experience and foresight on windows.

Seriously.
Yeah that's what was supposed to happen.
And then it didn't
>Prove me wrong
>>
>>58909600
Windows 7 does not detect most network drivers automatically, unless there is an existing network connection already.

Have you ever built a computer or fresh installed on a laptop?
>>
>>58909632
True that my lack of experience may be leading to an issue, however unless I went through Toshiba's database and spent hours downloading the drivers one by one I'd still be fucked since the old HDD was usless, and I don't have another Satellite P870 lying around

Windows shills on suicide watch for this thread.
>it just werks
No, it doesn't
>>
>>58909659
So not only do you not have any foresight, you thought you could repair a broken HDD by installing windows? You do not belong here.
>>
>>58909466
Are you on an Asus laptop? Had this exact problem last week tryna reinstall Windows 7. First time ever encountering this, I reinstall computers with 7 often for my friend's wife's sons and family, usually it's either just bullshit HDD undetected problem or EOL laptop with almost no driver. In the end I just installed 8 and atleast the USB is detected so I can sideload drivers.

I had to manually install ethernet and USB controller drivers when I installed Windows 7 on my desktop.
>>

Toshiba actually. I've actually been doing SSD upgrades for a little while for a living but this was the first time in awhile that I wasn't cloning the drive first.

get a proper version of windows?

and not some cheap stripped out version of windows from some shady torrent site
>>
>>58909600
The same thing happened to me.
I installed windows 7 on my x220 and I didn't have any drivers, no ethernet, no WiFi, it couldn't even display the full 1366x768 resolution.
USB worked though.
It was a lot of work considering I just wanted to play a few games for a weekend.
>>
>>58909729
I noticed a couple other "Switching away from windows" threads in the catalog after I started this one too. Maybe just fucking maybe it's not shilling, and there's actually a problem.
>>58909737
Except that it's actually a large catalog of drivers that didn't properly install, and yes it is a shit load of them on their website.
Unless you actually know what you're talking about I suggest you refrain from your standard dumbassery
>>
>>58909755
It was literally a system builder's disk that I have used plenty of times before.

Has /g/ really become this stupid or are do Microshills populate this board now?
>>

To solve the situation I just booted into a live USB and got the drivers from there.

Dude. You have to stop. You do not have to install all the drivers on the website-ever. You only install what you need and it is NEVER all of them, as they include drivers on the website for all the different POSSIBLE configurations, of which your laptop is only one.

You are only making yourself look stupid

>Or install Linux on USB Flash drive and boot from USB
>>
>>58909806
I did try that, but it won't recognize any OS's off of USB when I try to boot.
>>
>>58909600
Well, after years of installing Windows in desktops and laptops, one of the things I learned is that you should always download the ehternet and wireless drivers before you start installing Windows.
>>
>>58909772
It's probably different versions and different platforms. Last time I was on Toshiba for this yes there were a lot listed but only a handful actually needes/of use
>>
>>58909772

Entered serial number, and OS. Still gave me a bunch of shit, of which ones I don't know if I need or don't. Website is shittily designed and everytime I download one I have to enter my info again just to bring the list back up. Seriously give it a try right now and tell me what you think
>>
>>58909466
>can post on 4chan
>but can't just download the drivers onto a USB and install them like any competent perosn

>>58909907
I've used it before to download drivers for a Toshiba satellite when I replaced the HDD and I had no issues, and I only had to download about 5 drivers.
>>
>>58909822
So you do not even know how to make a bootable usb drive? I don't think you are ready for linux. How will you even install it if you dont have any CDs to burn it on?
>>
mhwd
>>
I have never seen with does 7 not have at least basic USB drivers
>>
>>58909600
Hardware released after Windows 7.

Windows 7 lacks a lot of USB3 support. If the laptop is fully USB3 then it's gonna be a pain in the ass.

Though there is the question of how he is installing Windows 7 on the laptop. If it is from a disc then he could fairly easily either burn a disc with drivers or add drivers to a Windows 7 iso and burn that to a disc.
>>
>>58909552
Do you think winbotnet 10 si better?
>>
>>58910566
At least USB 3.0 would work ootb
>>
>>58910575
Using a bad unoptimised generic driver from Micro$oft?
It's easy to install the drivers, really.
>>
>>58910600
It is, if you have a disc with them.
If you only have USB drives then you're fucked.
>>
>>58910600
So do it then install them in Windows 7 if it's that easy why are you here?

Oh, so you had USB drivers then.

>>58909466
If there's no Ethernet adapter, wireless or wired, just download it somewhere else and put it on the PC (usb2 ports work, 3 don't) then go to the manufacturer website and download everything you need.
Keep it on a CD or something so you won't have to do it next time.
Pretty straightforward and once you found everything it just werks

Have you tried all the universal serial buses on the computer. Some laptops need drivers for most of them but there should be att least one that is on the board. This is detected by the windows installation and shown under installed drivers as a serial bus. See if it recognized one then try until you find it.

I tried this with Windows 7 and Windows 8.1.
No matter which tool I used (nLite, WinReducer, or by hand), the result ISO always refused to install, boot, or had some other issue.

I didn't fuck with it, just integrate updates.
But it never worked.

Though, I just use "Convenience Rollup".
Takes only 30 mins and the system is almost fully updated.

your fault for not realizing windows 7 is actually old as shit without proper usb 3 drivers on the image.

you can fix this problem if you just google how to add usb 3 drivers to the image. it requires a bit of direction following, but is relatively simple. if you manage to do that, you'll be able to load shit from usb after the install.

had to do the same thing for my pc, and my girlfriends two laptops (work and home). then i tried windows 10 and realized these problems went away and there was nothing actually wrong with the enterprise edition, i just pirated that and we just use that instead.
