Media Foundation is the Windows API that finally replaced DirectShow back in Vista. It allows DXVA 2.0 acceleration, EVR, full colourspace support, and lets you set your application to the Multimedia Class scheduler so video always stays smooth. MPC-HC and MPC-BE already use it.

It seems that VLC doesn't suck ass since 2.0 either.

mpv isn't bad, especially for streaming things.

Well, it's possible to do all these things without Media Foundation. mpv does.
>>
>>58899646
You can do anything without MS proprietary staff
Media Foundation is Windows only
>>
>>58899718
Well yeah obviously those are all Windows features. mpv uses them on Windows.

>>
>>58899777
mpv isn't against adding platform specific features if they're easy. Registering with the Multimedia Class Scheduler Service is only a few lines of code, so it does that. You can change the MMCSS class of the playback thread with --vo-mmcss-profile. Also, mpv supports a ton of platform-specific hardware accel APIs: VA-API, VDPAU, CUDA, VideoToolbox, DXVA2 and D3D11 video decode (because there are no platform/device independent ones.)

As for colourspace support, mpv's OpenGL renderer supports a lot of input colourspaces, but it can only do RGB output (that is, no hardware YUV overlays.)

>>58899855
>it would use if it would be windows only.
Well, no. mpv actually has a lot of Windows, macOS and Linux-specific code in it.

I mean yeah, mpv would never do something like reimplementing the OpenGL VO in Direct3D, because that would be a colossal amount of work for the benefit of only a single platform. That doesn't mean the devs aren't prepared to do a sane amount of work to properly support each target operating system though.

It seems to fail a lot, the pixart variant is quite good for nnedi3 fags but produces high amount of distortion artefacts, you probably can't see them on your retarded tv but in professional monitors they are everywhere. Ewa_lanczos/soft/sharp are the sanest scalers currently available.

How can people use software of a dev that thinks there were 6 service packs for windows xp?
>>
I'm building a wrapper around mpv that makes it work like mpd+mpc for music.

Basically, mpv will play your music in the background, and you can control mpd with my wrapper program.

Eventually, I'm going to build an ncurses interface for managing the play list.

Anyone interested in something like this or should I not release it?

Haasn is happy with his jinc variant, haasnsoft. Igv is just translating (thanks bro) the meme algo from shiandow and doom9 guys and w4m doesn't care at all.

Can't help directly, but I know you can with mplayer, so you should be able to with mpv, maybe setting up audio filters.
But does mpv really downmix for you by default? For me, with Pulse as ao and using headphones, -v output shows it's not downmixing multi-channel audio. Audio is never mentioned in configs, so I'm wondering if I need to do anything other than set --audio-channels=stereo ?

>>
>>58903220
I'd be interested, depending on how well it's made. I certainly like the idea of using mpv for all of my media-consumption (video, image viewer, music).
Also you should know that there is already an mpc-like interface for mpv (https://github.com/wildefyr/mpvc), you might not have to reimplement that yourself.

Speaking of image viewing, haasn if you're there do you know if the properties video-pan-* could be made more efficient? The drag-to-pan meme is a bit shitty right now.

AFAIK, when using Arch you're supposed to build everything from source for "muh performance" and shit. And the fact that the package was built against a different backend than what you're attempting to link it against at runtime is NOT a fault of mpv, it's either 1) You for not understanding how dynamically linked software works, and 2) The package maintainer for not recompiling the package against whatever ffmpeg backend is in the Arch repos atm.

DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG is a GPU driver bug. User code shouldn't be able to cause a modern GPU to hang, and if it does, it's the driver's fault. Luckily, unlike OpenGL driver bugs, D3D driver bugs have a chance of getting fixed.

ANGLE is the solution and there's nothing wrong with that. It's supported by three large software vendors: Microsoft, Google and Mozilla, and it's used in two popular Windows programs: Chrome and Firefox. WGL and solutions based on WGL (like the dxinterop backend) are a dead end because WGL is deprecated API. Microsoft will continue to shit on native OpenGL apps until they go away. dxinterop has the additional problem in that it also relies on a poorly supported OpenGL extension that apparently the AMD and Intel driver devs don't even bother to test.

If you want to use mpv on Windows and you don't like ANGLE (note: there is no reason not to like ANGLE,) you'll just have to wait for vo_vulkan (if it ever happens.)
>>
I will wait because all these bugs increase my hatred to open source software. Now are you sure that Microsoft will not do the same with Vulkan?

Is sharpening only good for videos with lots of solid colors, like anime, or will it work well for all kinds of video?

So Yesterday I was having some Issues with Subtitles just straight up not working at all.

So I decided to go back to MPC-HC just to try and see if the file was broken.

it wasn't, the subtitles load fine with MPC-HC and then I realized.

>Linear scalers like spline or ewa_lanczos fail with lowres animes.
>I suppose the mpv devs are smart enough to create a lowcost nnedi3 like madshi did with his ngu and ngu pixart algo
Dunno.
Assuming wm4 doesn't care at all is a safe bet. He never cared about scalers and in fact, it was quite an ordeal to get some of the current stuff into mpv.

However, haasn cared a lot about this stuff, extensive comparisons were made and work done to make the ewa stuff the best available options of their kind. When the nnedi3 stuff came into reach (easier to build into mpv) he instantly pretended like this is pure shit and can't produce decent results in any sensible use-case. Even though there are indeed some cases where nnedi3 produces good results the #mpv cycle jerk made sure to insult anyone even remotely thinking about using these techniques. At the same time the situation regarding anti-ringing and the ewa scalers is disastrous.
At this point, I must assume haasn either doesn't care about improving scalers anymore or has no idea how to improve these kind of algorithms so all he could do is copy current ones and that would damage him in his "quality" fight against madVR.

all the bilateral chroma upscalers (including krig) can produce awesome results in many cases, only to produce the most ugly artifacts you've ever seen in some other situations.
