Bought this on sale for $50 a couple years back and it's still going strong. I wanted a nicer keyboard that could fit on my desk drawer while also leaving room for my mouse. It's not top of the line but if you can get it on sale like I did it's worth the money. The cable is detachable if needing to replace but I haven't worn it out yet either.
>>
>>58895153
Hey I bought this as well this Black Friday. All in all it's probably their best board with a good price, dedicated volume control, tasteful color scheme and no sperg RGB lighting.

Just wish they made it in more switches, red is not the best for typing which is why I bought a topre board recently.
>>
I have two Das Keyboards I picked up around 5-6 years ago. One with blank key caps one with blue key switches, and another with browns.

They still work great, although the USB expansion ports in one of them don't work anymore, think I fucked them up somehow. Anyway, I'm getting bored with them, and feel Das is just baby's first easy-modo mechanical keyboard. I want to advance to the next level.

What should I look at or research? I'm in America, my budget is $100-$200. Don't care for LEDs so much, but if they're non-optional, would prefer non-blue LEDs. Tactile key switches to start. Full or TKL, will consider both.

I'm looking for something bulky and rock-solid, something that's got the old Commodore 64 or Amiga feel to it in terms of cap quality. A pleasing color scheme for the caps would be nice too.

>Just wish they made it in more switches

Same here, there's definitely more to be desired from the cherry switches that are installed in them.

I do like having raised keys though, great for cleaning (I eat at my desk like an animal). Even with the drawer, I still somehow get crumbs on it.

Saw it on sale for 60 Euros or something, really wanted a keyboard with a numerical pad on the right side + brown switches though so I've ordered a Cherry MX 3.0 for my first mech.
Hope I've done well, ah well my current keyboard is probably not too far off from dying anyway, it's a old 20 bucks Logitech.

>Cooler Master cheapo 30€ mech
But this CM is also a rubberdome, lol.
>semi-mech is only membrane but with independent circuit
Not really. Usually there is individual slider for each key, which produces tactile feedback, but at the base its still a rubberdome sheet over membrane.

On unrelated note, how are drevo keyboards regarded here? I have seen positive reviews about them and I am planing to buy one as a portable driver. Planning on buying them with outemu blacks as people has always told me that i'm a keyboard smasher (on laptop, even thought my laptop keyboard is pretty good, maybe habit from bad keyboards).
>>
>>58898287
im actually really interested on this now, because of >>58898305
someone buy one of those and compare it to a topre keyboard
>>
>>58898447
I have the Masterkeys Lite L "Meme-Chanical" Keyboard. Its really wierd if you are used to cherrys, you can feel that its membrane but you have that subtle tactile thing going on.
>>
>>58898305
>>58898447
Topre actuation is based on some complicated electronic magic sensing spring compression, while dome over membrane is good old "bridge two traces together" shit.
Topre actuates mid-stroke, rubberdome actuates on bottoming out.
There is a shit-ton of those chinese "mechnical feel" keyboards, ranging in quality, but usually cheap as dirt. Some of them have MX-compatible sliders so you can change caps (like those CM and i-Rocks keyboards)
>>
>>58894369

My Ducky Shine 6 comes today. I'm pretty excited. I didn't realize ducky's were so well built. I'll post pictures when i get it if you guys want.
>>
I've been wanting a dactyl for a while but the effort required to source the parts and assemble it as well as the price has stop me. Why such a high barrier for entery.

The orthodox just seems kinda gimped without the curved keys.
>>
is the planck a real keyboard or just an expensive artisan holder?
>>
>>58895042
They did with the Ducky preorders. After they came back in stock they sold out instantly. So preorder them now. You can always cancel or return it since you get a 30 day return policy
>>
>>58895332
IBM model M on ebay, or if you want something new and modern get a Unicomp Model M which you can buy on their website or amazon. Their own website has more customization options, but if you prefer amazon then you can order from them. This keyboard has a unique typing experince sine it was one of the only switches where the tactile feedback and click happen at the exact moment of actuation
>>
>>58897120
>>58897403
>>58897729

Don't bother with these hybrid memechanical switches. Either get a Chinese mechanical keyboard like a Tomoko or Magicforce, or a rubber dome like a k120

There are Chinese knockoffs that you can buy like the PlumMX96, but they look ugly.
>>
>>58900860
I slightly prefer the RS96 standard case's design to the ZZ96, but they're both nice and clean. Honestly, whichever one comes up first will get my money in all likelihood, and I'll be happy as a pig in shit either way.

They all have keyboards for under 50€

You can buy them from china using aliexpress and banggood, or get them from amazon

So I noticed that if I go fast enough I don't even notice the tactility on alot of my switches, including topre, MX and MODs. This makes the "tactility" kind of pointless if I really need to type. Any switch out there that's got the most unfuckingbelievable tactility out there? Matias? Zealios?

Keyboards must be gray or black.

Proverbs 31:30
Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain

1 Samuel 16:7
But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”

Jeremiah 4:30
And you, O desolate one, what do you mean that you dress in scarlet, that you adorn yourself with ornaments of gold, that you enlarge your eyes with paint? In vain you beautify yourself. Your lovers despise you; they seek your life.

Topre feels like a Cherry MX brown but replace the tactile bump with a membrane flex and the key triggers without bottoming out. and it is alos much quiter and even more so if you buy silencing O-rings. If you get a realforce get DON'T GET THE VARIABLE SPRINGS. Get one with all the same spring type.

Does anyone ever find the "perfect" switch or do you all just make do with the fact that there will never be a board that has its tactility at the top and is easy enough to hold down for gaming yet strong enough for your hands to bounce off of when typing?

Are knockoff Topres any good? I'm really considering getting the plum 75.
Comes with PBT keycaps, rgb, fully programmable, 60% with function row, bluetooth or wired, cherry mx stems. I'm surprised it's not more popular.
People seem to complain that there is no 55g weight but I've never tried a real topre and I'm currently using gateron browns. I've also read that the bluetooth can't keep up with over 9-10 keys a second.

Using a Royal Kludge RC930. These are pretty good to be honest, even compared to real Topre. Absolutely worth the savings. I really do recommend 55g, but 45g is also good, especially if you like light switches. The real topre advantage I think is that rubber domes provide rebound off the keys that doesn't affect your ability to hold down the key.

Tactility will often be more noticeable than a brown.

Any recommendations for a cheap ergodox with blue/green/clear so I can see if I like the layout
>>
>>58908927
No such thing. Best you could do is to get existing ergonomic rubberdomes; these will be cheap enough and similar enough.

Keep in mind ergos only improve comfort, and given that typing is an inherently comfortable thing to do for most, if you're not already suffering from some kind of pain that a wristrest couldn't solve, then an ergodox is probably not necessary.

Got the Gramr as a second board, love it. Quality for the price, not 100% chink shit switches, nice features, only problems I have are edgy font, and lighting profile number HAS to stay on and can not be turned off for the profile, so instead of having just letters backlit, I just turn off the lights entirely.

even with uniform sa or dsa your sets might not include some of the keys you actually use or you might have deepdish keys where they don't belong.
>>
>>58910373
every standard dsa or sa set comes with both regular and deepdish versions of f and j, so you don't have to use the deepdish at all

alternately, groupbuys generally have an extra homing pack option with deepdish homing keys for dvorak, colemak, etc
>>

So tell me where i get something like a german pbt dsa set for an ergodox that supports maltron layout (2u sideway e) and has blank deepdish keys.

No i am not, that is literally what i am using and what i suggested blanks for.
And generally for programmable boards people often use keys on the first layer that are not included in any set you can buy. So going blank from the start can be way nicer.

with function layer mapping you can set it so that the number row is the function row. You can toggle between them berry easily, for example I set the FX keys to layer 2 so that whenever I need to refresh a page I just hit 5, but if I need to input numbers then I can switch back to layer 1 and use those. Though I much better solution would be to say use layer 3 to have a number pad on the alpha keys. Also since the keyboard is programmable you can easily set up any keys you need

Why not just buy a typewriter and mechanically and electrically convert it into a keyboard?

Plum nopres are the best. However, 87 TKL is an ugly form factor with so much empty space; go with the 84-key plum non-rgb on aliexpress from 'EZ Mandarin Shoppers' aka 'mech greenhands' on deskthority: https://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/Plum84-electrostatic-capacitive-mechanical-keyboard-topre-clone-compact-gaming-keyboard-PBT-keycap-detachable-cable-84-mini/818123_32598836635.html

Also the 87-key Plum has a non-removable USB cord, 84-key has a removable braided mini USB cable. The only downside to the 84 is the super non-standard 5.5u spacebar, so if you want to get rid of the NiZ (name of Plum owner's daughter), you gotta paint over it, get a 3-D printed spacebar on shapeways or something, or get odd bars from keycap sets like MiTo's Braun set that just expired on Massdrop last week.

Lastly, Massdrop will ship your shit in a year (they're shipping that 87 TKL in May); if you order from aliexpress, you'll get it in 3 weeks from China.

thx senpai. can you describe how the 35g switches are? i had a silenced variably weighted realforce keyboard before, sold it, and have been craving to have something like it again
>>
>>58902148
How 1337! $300 for a bleh topre keyboard that has only half the buttons as a normal keyboard.

To top it all off you the keys dont have lettering, god forbid you ever have to collaborate with someone

Enjoy writing hello-world tier applications in vim all day and feeling good about yourself with it

35g Nopres (topre clones) are super light (think slightly lighter than cherry browns - some register at 30g. Thankfully Plum includes 30x 10g springs with all their boards so you can at least convert the alphas to 45g. If you want 55g, you can get 20g springs on taobao(they are legit to order from, they make good pbt keycaps that sometimes show up on massdrop, etc.). https://world.taobao.com/item/531262544790.htm These topre springs are wider than cherry springs and go around the cylindrical slider under the keycaps. If you don't want springs under your keycaps, then you can achieve 55g native by replacing Plum's rubber dome sheet with your own, but you'll have to do some custom cutting to get the right fit. Here's a 104-key 55g sheet on ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Electrostatic-Capacitive-Rubber-Dome-Sheet-55g/172350643128

there a lot of little neat things about plum. Aside of springs, they also include spare stabilizer.
Also, I like how they did cable in 108 version. Three way canal is quite handy.

You can get a cheap chinese mechanical keyboard for less then 30 bucks. The build quality is better then a 30 dollar rubber dome keyboard, and in some cases a 50 dollar mechanical keyboard

I have one. It's pretty not great. The cap quality is shit. But if you don't try to make the keycaps be a knockoff of a well known hard to get set, it wouldn't be too horrible.

What is the point of a mechanical keyboard over, say, a 7-row Thinkpad keyboard? What am I gaining in my day-to-day?

you gain nothing aside of nice tactile feeling and aesthetic
