But there's the thing - you wouldn't be put in that situation because the "in crowd" would be selected by an algorithm to only show you things where you would be part of the in crowd, without telling you that it's doing that.

It would provide every user with a sense of belonging because it would only ever show you threads that you agree with, until you seem to wander a bit and need a little interest boost. Then, it could be tuned to show you just enough conflict to reinforce the ideas you have, by occasionally showing people cross-group threads intended to create conflict between groups with opposing views, to create just enough interest in you to get you a little riled up, before the "mods delete the thread" and the groups get separated once again, into the false, warm safety of only seeing posts from agreeable people.
