Either, you connect to a server that is attackable and gives out your IP to EVERYONE, EVERYBODY who can attack the server can find your IP.

OR.

you use a program that doesn't go through a server, which means you have to connect directly to them, which means you're more vulnerable to those people, but you only use those programs with people you trust.
