depends on what you want to do with it. If you want to install non-android (or non-linux if you install crouton on the chromebook) programs, go with the thinkpad. If you're okay with just using android/web apps, chromebook is fine because it's pretty fast, takes just a few seconds to start

Speaking of chromebook, are there any good notepad apps with rich text formatting? Seems all I could find are text editors, or the microsoft word that came with my samsung galaxy which only seems to save in .xslx.

Pretty much any chromebook with an intel cpu. Stay away from ARM chromebook if you care about loonix support because linux on the arm chromebooks don't support openGL hardware acceleration.

I'm looking at buying a Chromebook because I just realized I don't use my laptop for much more than 4chan and watching movies and my Thinkpad broke (thanks mom, you're a fucking bitch)

I found a Chromebook pixel on eBay for $318 and it looks pretty good, 2560x1700, i5. But the problem is that it only has 32gb storage and 4gb ram. Is there any way to upgrade that? I'd be willing to buy a 128gb SD card for storage, but the low ram is kind of off-putting.

It's going to be either running Chrome or whatever Linux distro you put on it, and it only has a dual core processor. On a system like this designed for light workloads, 4GB of RAM is more than enough.

I have had no issues with performance on my 2013 Pixel. I never even used ChromeOS, I just wiped it and loaded Gallium Linux immediately.

I got an HP Chromebook 11 (G1) in 2013 and am still using it.

Literally almost everything about it is perfect. It's actually performing better than it was when I first bought it. It only gets better with age. Only problem is that you can't do much with it. It might surprise you every now and again with what it can do if you're willing to modify it a bit, but mostly it's just for editing documents, listening to music, watching videos, shitposting and porn.

It's not a Pixel but whatever, it's really nice for just casual browsing. I actually prefer it over the Windows laptop I have.

I had an Acer C720. Fucking awesome little machine.

I have to admit, I actually really like the way Chrome OS handles updates. It just quietly downloads the update in the background and waits until you're ready to shut down to update. And the best part is that there's no configuring or anything, it just shuts down and boots up next time like nothing happened. It's cool.

That Chromebook comes in Intel and ARM variants. The ARM version releases on the 12th, the Intel one doesn't have a release date yet. They're exactly the same except for the processor.

If I only plan on using Chrome OS and not installing another Linux distribution, is there any advantage or disadvantage to getting an ARM chromebook over an Intel one? I remember when Intel Android phones were a thing that they couldn't run a lot of Android apps. So now that Chrome OS has the play store, does the same app compatibility problem on Intel processors still exist?

Stupid question: Why can't Windows, Android and iOS updates function the same way Chrome OS updates do?

I'd recommend an HP Chromebook 13 or Samsung Chromebook Pro just because of its high-end construction but if you just need a cheap, simple machine to run Chrome OS on, then you should an Acer Chromebook. Those things are usually super durable and within the sub-$500 range. They're just not very powerful.

Is OS version not the only thing holding back support for Play Store integration? I know that they have a list of supported models, but it utterly baffles me that my older "unsupported" ChromeBook is still getting updates. I'm on v56 as of earlier today.

I've been thinking about just getting a newer one that's supported. However, I cannot justify abandoning my C710, with its proper keyboard and serviceable parts.

I really want to buy one of those 2013 LTE Pixels, but they don't get Play Store support either, apparently. By my skimming of their forums, it seems to be absolutely arbitrary what gets support and what doesn't.

I actually just pre ordered the plus. I figure the processor is powerful enough since my phone (Nexus 6p) can browse the web and watch YouTube videos at 1440p just fine, and this has a slightly higher res screen and a more powerful processor/GPU, so the experience should be smooth enough.
