an antivirus basically just checks executables against a database of hashes of viruses.
it might also check if there are some common virus behaviors, but that's easy to circumvent in normal viruses.
Either way, if you get a virus through a buffer overflow, antivirus isn't going to do shit against that. That's why you should just use common sense.
