Not just Linux tho.
MacOS is bound to hardware and has come to a point where it forces the ecosystem on you in order to function, windows is impossible to use for anything other than gaymeng and office.
There is no good OS at the moment.
>Inb4 Chrome OS, templeOS, BSD

Weak minded people fall for Linux
>>
Not quite. It's just sitting around biding its time until the post PC era - then it will dominate the PC.
>>
"Linux" is not a thing that can succeed or fail. Linux is a kernel, you can use it or not. No one is forcing you to use it, like Windows.
Unlike MacOS, there's no company behind Linux that makes computers and specifically tailors their version of Linux for their own computers. Which means, no vertical control, no support, no single point of contact, no standard development toolchain, incompatible ABIs, no commercial software partners, no consumer facing brand people recognize.
The closest thing is Chrome OS from Google. I'm not even sure how close the Chromium kernel is to the main line kernel at this point. Maybe that can be considered a fork, which is fine.
The Valve SteamOS and Steam hardware platform could be considered another candidate but they're not very popular yet.

Basically to successfully market a real product or line of products you need one organization pushing a singular agenda, like Apple, Google or Valve. Or you need monopolistic power like Microsoft. Otherwise you end up with mess consumers will simply refuse to deal with. Consumers look for finished products, not mashes of kernels, libraries dependencies and a shocking lack of commercial applications they need to do their jobs.

Not really, wouldn't trade it for anything on my work machine. Though I'm a server admin so I don't need office software often and even then Libreoffice has done the trick.

True, but all the other alternatives failed even harder, not as a comercial product but as being an OS. They have all become data mining and advertising software with OS features.

Package management is missing and being a Python dev I find it incredibly messy to have a fully functioning environment.
>>
>>58868063
Not exactly. Chrome OS is becoming more and more capable, especially now that it has Android apps. Chromebooks are very popular in schools, so you could say Linux has found success on the desktop in one demographic.

My theory is that Google is slowly evolving Chrome OS to be more and more of a viable desktop OS that could replace Windows for most normies. Now that it has Android apps, I think people can develop apps that are targeted towards Chromebooks. If Chromebooks take off, they'll get more and more software support to do everything most people would need.

Id say linux is better than ever, ots the best its ever been
I installed linux mint for the first time on a 300 dollar laptop the day before uni started, understood it within 3 hours.
Took it to uni and took all my notes on tomboy, made documents on libre writer and linked them to the tomboy notes.
Got an extra hour of battery life out of the laptop and when i bought a 12 dollar docking station it worked with my monitors at home when i plugged it into that.
Looks better than windows, tasks better than windows, feels better than windows.
Nah im glad its my daily driver now
>>
>>58884954
This.
Linux mint is so cozy. I use it on my daily driver, but my HTPC/seedbox is arch.

It's not so much that Apple forces their ecosystem on you so much as that is the largest benefit to using Apple products and owning more than one and actively choosing not to utilize them within the ecosystem together is pretty pointless and stupid.

I hated Apple everything for a very long time. Then I switched cell phone carriers and decided on pure whim to buy an iPhone SE just to see if Apple products were any better now than they were 9 years ago when I last owned an iPod and a Mac. My love for the iPhone was so instant and complete that I found myself *wanting* the ecosystem, so I bought a Mac mini this afternoon. I'm extremely happy with my decision. It's still more than I wanted to pay for a new desktop PC, but I was buying it for the ecosystem.

The fact that you had to list 3 different PSS is the exact problem that Linux has.
Fragmentation is what is keeping Linux from becoming mainstream, we need to focus all this energy that is being spent in developing a thousand distros into a single, perfectly functioning OS with excellent support and decent UI.
Look at the three OS you cited:
>Ubuntu
Stable, great support, works on all hardware flawlessly but shit UI
>Mint
Excellent UI but outdated by desing
>Elementary
Easy to use, you never need to open a terminal, but gimped and useless for power users

Now merge all three and you get the best OS of the planet
