I've been lurking /g/ for a while and I saw the Thinkpad general and looked at the ktgee guides.
I found a X201 on ebay in Jul 2014 for $235 US (About $260 Canuck bucks at the time) and got a 128GB SSD for it (about $85 CAD at the time).
It has served me faithfully and runs Win10 fine, but I am looking to upgrade to a better laptop that has:
-8GB or more RAM
-i5/i7 Haswell or newer
-Great Battery life
I was looking into a new Dell XPS 15 ~$1900 CAD, but then saw that there were better laptops for batter life and also, 1900 is a bit crazy.
Logical increments/laptop guide is down atm, help /g/. What is the best value laptop with performance and battery life in mind?
Macbook Pro only costs 4 dollars a day
>paying over £800 for a laptop without its own OS made for it's hardware

find ddr4 skylake/kabylake laptop with integrated gpu no optics and 128/250gig ssd , than instal linux and feel the power

Lol, I saw that. My X201 cost me less than 0.25$/day so I think I made the right choice at 16 times less cost.

Really don't care. Apple throttles the hardware they use any way.

I used Mint for a while on the X201, then Win 8.1, then used Antergos Openbox for a while, then Win 10. I use MS Publisher to make a student newspaper and it doesn't run on the X201 in Wine so I had to revert back for the next issue. Win 10 runs surprisingly better than Win 8.1

Looks sweet, thanks anon

I can understand that, however, in my case the X201 performs perfectly in both Arch Antergos and Win 10, but Wine and virtualization were not an option to get MS Publisher running.

Solution is in intel skylake/kabylake CPUs with VT-d (Intel Virtualization Technology for Directed I/O )
you can run windows with 95% native performance inside a linux (even play win games with 90+% native performance)

keywords: VT-d , Qemu, KVM, vfio ,gpu passthrough

Very cool. I will look into that.
