Where was the "fake news" meme 16 years ago when the American public was fooled into thinking Saddam Hussein had WMDs and was responsible for 9/11?
>>58853768
Media had some credibility still, leaders weren't afraid of the people.
>>58853543
The media is on a complete lying spree lately, or maybe they always were its just that people are waking up now.
>>58853872
(((waking up)))

Not the news made up those lies, it was the government. Not even the CIA, they warned them not to roll with it iirc.

Insufferable faggot

That was lies from the President, a tradition that is a lot older than 16 years.
The fake news phenomenon exists because of the widespread use of the Internet and social media as a replacement for traditional newspapers and TV news. People who spent their lives getting news from sources that could not just make up bullshit from whole cloth (because they would lose their reputation and people would stop buying it) are now treating the Internet as if it were similar: as if it followed the rules of journalism or had a reputation to protect.
There has always been made-up shit on the Internet. The new phenomenon is people treating what they see there like a reputable news source. In my opinion it will actually take a whole generation for fake news to stop working as well as it does.

The problem is also the simultaneous decline in the quality of media as well. Like CNN taking that ridiculous dossier BuzzFeed published as undoubtedly factual and running stories on that. Even MSNBC wouldn't fucking go that far on that shitheap of a document.
Or that recent Fox News story about how an Iraqis grandmother died because she wasn't allowed into the US for treatment due to the executive order, turns out she died well before the executive order was even signed let alone implemented.
Or shit like this on the front of Huffington Post nearly constantly over the last year. Does this sound like it has even a shred of objectivity and fairness?
When the media itself begins to show an incredibly blatant amount of bias and a lack journalistic standards, are you that surprised when people stop being able to distinguish it from real reporting work?
>conservative rag gets BTFO by the man himself
LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

>are you that surprised when people stop being able to distinguish it from real reporting work?
are you surprised that this was the plan the entire fucking time?
>>58855937
Nope, he tried to warn us

That sucks but its not the real problem. Thats not new, and its not fake news. Its just mistakes and/or reporting decisions that may be biased. News sources that consistently do that still lose reputation. They generally do issue corrections for blatant errors and they apologize heavily when the occasional fabrication makes it through.
Fake news is random assholes sitting down and deciding "I think Hillary Clinton runs a child trafficking ring out of a pizza shop" and self-publishing a fanfic story about it, spreading it on social media, and collecting ad revenue. Its not a mistake. Its not biased reporting. Its fictional fantasy written to get clicks. Since the website is a bullshit no-name site, there is no reputation to lose. If that ever bacame an issue the owners would just spin up a new site anyway.
Then regular people who have taken journalistic standards for granted all their lives see those stories and dont realize the difference between a news source and a web site made to look like a news source. They end up believing that Hillary Clinton actually runs a child trafficking ring out of a pizza shop.
