Which is better for work /g/:

Trackball or Mouse?

Why?

Keyboard shortcuts.

Trackball is better for your wrist.
>>
>>58849182
I wish they are not so expensive in Europe. Twice the amazon.com prize. The fuck.
>>
I've been looking at this for a while, I wonder if they are actually good.
>>
>>58849158
Trackball is better for someone with little desk space. A mouse is better for people with large desk space.
>>
Mouse.

I do work + vidya on the same computer.
>>
Trackball is shit for gaming and graphics work but great for everyday browsing and desktop use. Also a wireless one like op is good for use in an htpc because you can use it from the couch or even your exercise bike.
>>
>>58849194
Got a wired Logitech one from a bootsale for 1gbp
>>
>>58849158
I use that exact same trackball and it's fantastic for regular use.

It's pretty shit if you want pixel-perfect precision. Even if you're not doing heavy graphic work, like selecting one pixel with a color picker has the potential to take 10x as long. As for gaming, keyboard-only/gamepad games aside, I play strategies and point-and-click games and it's never gotten in the way.
>>
>>58849158
Keyboard.

It has been proven over and over that the fastest and most efficient interface between a human and a computer is a keyboard.
>>
Kind of off topic, but I have one of those old Dell trackball mouse, but what do you anonys use to clean the track

I'm so used to my trackball I can't use a mouse in games. It does mean I have aim issues but id be worse with a
I wished more trackballs existed.
>>
>>58851620
I love gaming on mine, you can make move the mouse a lot more accuratly without picking anything up. Also accuracy can be trained on it to the point that even twitch shooters are playable, check youtube.
>>
I recently transitioned to trackball at work and home and really enjoying it. I have the Kensington Expert at work and the Elecom M-DT2DRBK.
>>
Trackball is god like.

How are these? 3Dconnexion was an OEM for Silicon Graphics I think.

Are there any good wired trackballs that either have a scroll wheel you can click, or a separate middle mouse button?

I'll say mouse!

Trackball is for play.

It balances out like that.
>>
>>58857563
Can this work just like an HID mouse?

...the availability of mice is orders of magnitude stronger.

If you're sitting at a desk, you have the opportunity to use a mouse.

On the other hand, you can't have a gamepad with a mouse in it! Or a remote. And if you wanted to make an arcade cabinet, a mouse would just look ridiculous with it!
>>
>>58857618
I don't know, I wouldn't even be particularly happy if it did, there's so awfully little trackballs available.
>>
>>58857656
I really meant if it can be used for regular computer stuff, or just for arcade games like SegaSonic The Hedgehog.
>>
>>58857670
Actually, it does function as a regular mouse.

It is an X-arcade product though, so it's made designed all heavy and reliable.
>>
>>58857765
>Actually, it does function as a regular mouse.
Yeah, I assumed that trackballs give the same input as an HID mouse, so I was a bit surpised by "I wouldn't even be particularly happy if it did".

Well, one speciality trackball functioning as a mouse would be peanuts, there is farcical absence of trackballs.

One problem is the shortage of ones with scroll wheels. It is natural how it presumably makes people shy away from them, but it's damn slimy how a simple silly scroll wheel is turned into a feature! The high end kensignton ones boast about a super elegant scroll ring.
>>
>>58858114
>super elegant scroll ring
Can that function as a middle mouse button? I really need that.
>>
>>58858236
Nope, it's a premium line.

Seeing as trackballs are no longer conceived of as any sort of basic item, a speciality manufacturer is the only source they be expected from.

A clickable wheel would be more fragile. Also, by limiting more basic trackballs to 2 buttons, they provide incentive for people to reach up for the 4 button elite models.
>>
anyone here have luck with vertical mice?

I have this one. I also have the Logitech trackman. The trackman is ambidextrous and really natural fitting. You can use any finger to move the ball excluding thumb. It's the best for my work desk where I've got 2 32" 4ks, 1 30" and one 27" monitor. The advantage is that you can flick the ball to get it over to the other side of the desktop. Downside, not enough buttons and mapping then on Linux is a hassle. Mice are impractical with that much real estate.i was getting carpal tunnel with the numb finger tips.

The blue one is only for use with the right thumb.i use it with my laptop. I tried on my desktop and my thumb started hurting. Has enough buttons though
>>
>>58857029
Because that's the only thumb actuated trackball anyone makes anymore. Broke down and bought one a few weeks ago.

I likes it.
>>
>>58858788
Sucks that there aren't a wired version then.
>>
you just need to get used to it. it's faster to get used to a thumb ball than a finger or kensington one, but i'd imagine a kensington would be better for straight up desktop work. thumb balls are easier to game with since your hand is already used to gaming on a non-trackball mouse.

I use that one in the OP, and had the older wired versions years ago. The click switches wear out if you do a lot of gaming with hard or long presses, like dungeon crawlers or twitch-fps shooters. You can solder new switches in pretty easily and they're fairly common among mice sold by logitech (like 50 cents each).
>>
>>58849158

that particular model is shit because the ball is too light and the entire base is also too light, and the precision is horrid

kensington, and perhaps belkin, are better choices
>>
>>58858883
Yeah, I had the wired version for about a decade ~2000-2010 until it broke. Recently got the bug again.

I would like to buy a MS Intellipoint one off eBay, but I loathe buying things off eBay.
