Absolutely none of this was intended as a serious OS.
Linux was Torvald's school project to learn how i386 worked. In his intro post on USENET, he explicitly mentioned how it "won't be big and professional like GNU". It's now the dominant OS everywhere but on desktop.
But wait, there's more!
UNIX itself was created because Ken Thompson wanted to play a game on a deprecated PDP-7 mini-computer. An operating system that almost completely obliterated competing designs and who's principles are found in every modern operating system was made because someone wanted to play a space game.
