I have one of these fb machines too, model A1181. Backlight doesn't work under Linux (always sets to minimum after boot). Is it difficult to install *BSD there? Never done that before.
>>
>>58840386
memes aside, freeBSD is relatively automatic, I guess.

there is a live iso project I see.
>>

That's the 2009 model. It'll run Sierra.
Why would you mess about with Linux or BSD?
Nothing to gain, everything to lose.
>>

I got so used to openness of Linux environment that Apple OS or Windows make me angry. Just a matter of personal preference.
Also this laptop is just lying around and trying BSD might be interesting.

Looks like the live iso isn't exactly what I'm used to from Linux distros.

Still, might be worth a try.

I posted on here before about the same model not too long ago. i put Lubuntu to run free programs for my engineering classes on. Pretty nice. Otherwise complete garbage POS pdf opener.
>>
>>58840942

I had tried it once before like 5 years at least on a regular disk install and it wasn't that hard to be honest. At least not harder than installing a debian stable, which isn't that hard.

I run 10.9 on mine and it's hooked up to some speakers and my television. It operates as a media server for all my films/television/music.

I also have Retroarch configured on there as it's capable of 1080p output - though I wouldn't push it too far into 5th gen consoles.
>>
>>58841302
>5th gen consoles
What are you talking about? Full speed n64 and psx emulation has been possible since the late 90s.

>>
>>58841419

I actually have the macbook released before OP's (early 2009). I honestly play all my PSX and N64 on the actual consoles since I own them still, so I haven't tested them through the server.

I wasn't sure if the 9400m would handle the output + the emulation + shaders.

>>
>>58836892
C2D 2,1 model? You could Libreboot it but if you take that path, you'd be better off with something like a T400 which is about the same weight and thickness and has far superior specs. I have one of those MacBooks and it only went up to OS X 10.7.5 and no new software worked. It was also slow as fuck and only supports 4GB of RAM. It currently sits in my corner collecting dust. My T400 outperforms it by like 10x.

This is my day to day laptop I use for college:

>Lenovo T400
>P8400 (w/integrated graphics)
>8GB RAM
>275GB SSD (for the OS)
>1TB HDD (backups, large files)
>Optical drive replaced with hard drive bay
>4 cell battery (x3, carried in backpack)
>Libreboot (faster than Coreboot and has GRUB as a payload)
>Devuan (Cinnamon DE)

I couldn't ask for a better computer. Got it for free but the most expensive upgrades were the $90 SSD and the $65 RAM cards. I also replaced the thermal paste with Arctic Silver, and it doesn't even get slightly warm like it used to.

If OP's model is the same as in the photo then it's specs are, at the very least - a P7550, two internal SATA bays (for SSD/HDD combo), support for up to 8GB of DDR3 RAM, and the capability of running macOS 10.12.

I think the T400 is a great computer too, but if OP has that Macbook lying around they should use. It's still a decent computer.
>>
>>58842730
That's wrong. OP's picture has the separate trackpad buttons, so it definitely doesn't support OS X 10.12. I would put good money on it being a 2,1.

Yep, you are right - my fuckup. Curious though, why do you assume it's a 2,1 and not something later like a 5,2 (same exterior/trackpad)?

If it's a 5,2 it still has two SATA bays and support for 6GB RAM.

>>
>>58843633
It's not a 5,2. That one's metal. The 2 SATA bays also sounds incorrect. I've never seen an Apple laptop with 2 hard drives in it. Are you talking about replacing the optical drive with a hard drive bay?

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201608
>>
>>58836892
I had one of these, the case was so shit, it cracked an warped like hell after a few years and the plastic just looked disgusting, you could never get it as white as when you got it and it was covered in hundreds of little scratches from general use, worst fucking apple laptop ever, even my g3 clamshell looks 100x better than this piece of shit
>>
>>58844360
Yeah, replace the optical drive with an HDD. Apple's never had a laptop with two 2.5" bays.
>>
>>58844397
That's what I did on my Thinkpad T400. It's pretty slow though.
>>
>>58844428
I've been meaning to do it to my PowerBook. Shitty thing is that both drives share an Ultra ATA
>>
>>58844360
5,2 is not metal - I own one.
http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook/specs/macbook-core-2-duo-2.13-white-13-mid-2009-nvidia-specs.html

Yeah, replacing the optical drive. As the owner of the T400 mentioned. Speed isn't that bad, when you consider the retro/media server usage.
>>
>>58844469
The bays don't cost more than like $10 a piece. You should definitely do it for backups if that's your main machine.

>>58844482
My mistake m8, I looked at the 5,1. It's a 2,1 because the frame is a little different towards the bottom. It's really hard to tell, but I know because that was my first computer. Speed is pretty crap when transferring large files. For anything under 2-3GB, it's decent.
>>
>>58844605
Oh I know, I've already got the bay. It's doing the upgrade that's been causing me to procrastinate. The 12" PowerBook G4 is a fortress, takes about 30 screws to get to the HDD and to remove the optical drive you literally have to gut it. The optical drive comes out only after you remove the logic board and everything else from the chassis.
>>
>>58837209
Nah, especially not this guy:
>>58837123
>>
>>58844638
That's terrible. My 2011 MacBook Pro has 10 screws holding the bottom plate on. After that it's like 5 screws for the network card/flex cable and then 3 more that hold the drive in place. My Thinkpad takes one screw to get to the hard drive, and the screw which locks the switch for the optical drive is missing, so I just flick the switch and pull the tab to remove that.
>>
>>58844835
