Does /g/ update their android phones?
I know that apple at some point update their old phones making them almost unusable just to make people buy the new ones. Android might do the same so I am a little hesitant to update every time.

My Galaxy S5 has been getting regular security updates, but no Nougat.

I've monitored the changes that come with updates, and so far I've seen no real impact on performance beyond the usual technological aging process.

My shity asus phone came out with 4.4,but I flashed 7.1.1 and it runs great.

If you aren't running a custom ROM then you're running spyware. Why would you let yourself be dependent on a company for security updates when they may not provide them or may make your phone run like shit, in addition to letting them collect data on you for advertising purposes?

im on 7.1 with my opo and it werks pretty well.
Although updating it's not that simple, if you have some obscure low grade chink phone, even if you find a rom with the next version of android, you will have a buggy shitty experience cause no one supports that shit.
If you really care about updating, buy nexus stuff or even oneplus (they are really supported by pajeets who make roms), don't buy newest samsung shit cause somr of them have problems with bunch of roms and xposed in general

The only time I bother to manually flash and/or roof an Android device is when support for it finally ends. My LG V10 is still on Android 6.0.1 as is the Samsung Tab A I'm typing this from. Nougat won't be standard on many devices for a while. Unless your phone is the kind with rooting, unlocked bootloader etc in mind from the get go, doing so on anything else is a huge pain. Also I'm hesitant. If I stick with 6.0.1, I can still root and go with Xposed framework which 7.x.x still doesn't have and won't for some time. System wide ad blocking via adAway is very nice to have.
