It has little to do with shilling itself or kids rationalizing purchases, more to do with the simple fact that because of certain events/movements (gamergate, trump memery, feminism, who is 4chan, etc) have had a whole bunch of people start posting here. Along with them, came marketers who wanted to shill to this uber popular site now.
