I'm not really user do distro hopping. Whenever I do, I usually start from scratch. This time I love it how I have my XFCE configured. How do I switch from Manjaro XFCE desktop to Debian but keeping my XFCE to look the same? Do I just put /home in a separate partition and then use that for Debian?
>>
>>58821915
You can get the manjaro themes from github, just save your configs.

Hey dude, the OP from the other thread here.

You are confusing me with someone else and you seem to think I am in some sort of race to create a thread first.

I recognize there was people trolling and creating troll fglt threads but not me. I am cool with someone else making the threads, but can you take the best from the other OP? Like the formatting and the links. People appreciate a less cluttered OP.

And again, I am not that shitty apps guy.

Although "GNU/Linux" /ɡəˈnuː slæʃ ˈlJnəks/ is often pronounced without the slash, Stallman recommends explicitly saying the word "slash" or "plus" in order to avoid the mistaken suggestion that the Linux kernel itself is a GNU package,[49] as is the case with GNU Linux-libre.

This isn't meant to prove a point or anything, but is Linux used in industry outside of servers?
Reason I ask is because I've been using Linux for only about 5 months, because I was under the impression Linux was used for embedded systems development (it's what I want to do when I graduate). However, I'm starting to get the idea that Linux is used for RTOS/the embedded system itself, and not for actual development. I got an FPGA development board from Altera, and the little setup program that maps the pins and does the top level design is only Windows compatible, despite the PLD IDE-thing being Linux compatible. And the FPGA board itself can run Ubuntu desktop, so I was pretty surprised that the setup was only windows compatible. I emailed them about this, and they just told me use Windows computer, bastards.

TL;DR, see first sentence of post.

The company I do my summer work in is mostly Linux. We built medical software+hardware, where the hardware runs an x86 based board and FPGA, and runs linux. The developers for that all use linux because it frankly just makes sense to target linux from linux.
The apps team uses windows because they need to write apps targeting windows machines in hospitals, but they're smaller and their tasks are far less interesting.

Most web development shops are the same - all the tools target linux servers, so they use linux development machines (or macs, if they're on the creative side, which are posix as well)

Why? IIS is incomparably bad for serving non-trivial web applications.
The Microsoft C compilers don't even target the embedded systems I need to target on a day to day basis.
I like being able to deploy and manage systems and services from whatever tools I want, and not have to contort powershell into what I need.

Windows is fine if you're a normie writing Word documents in an office environment, but just about anything more serious in tech requires you to start looking at alternatives, unless you're writing C#/Java line of business applications - and I think at that point I'd euthanise myself.

When I say fine, I mean acceptably operational. I'm trying to be objective here. I agree that everyone deserves better, but that's generally held to be a matter of opinion.

It's undeniable fact that Windows is, however, wholly inadequate in much of the technology space. I suspect if you drew a line between the two populations on /g/ - windows users and other users, you'd see that mostly windows users are also the ones driving nvidiot vs ayymd shitthreads, and mostly other users are driving sqt/dpt/etc.

/g/ would do well to be split into /gc/ - consumer technology and /gd/ - technology development, approximately. I'm not sure those names explain the difference quite as I intend it to be.

Extra security means hackers won't even bother, that is why most people use Iptables and some others AppArmor.

Nothing can go wrong in terms of damaging your hardware or anything. Did you want to dual boot and are worrying about losing your windows data? Don't worry about that either. Nvidia isnt that hard to set up if you don't need open source drivers.
>>
>>58832049
Make a usb drive of the distro of your choice, plug in, reboot, hit motherboard bios key (often f12 or delete) install. It's easy. And you're not "screwed". Just borrow someone elses PC and make a windows 10 install USB, or better yet, make one before you start just incase.

>>
>>58831990
overusing USE flags can cause problems, customisation is nice and all but just don't go turbo autist with it. if you do use the flags read up on them to ensure they won't cause issues.
>>
>>58831990
You're overthinking it, it's really easy.
If you're using the desktop profile then you can more or less just go with the defaults and not really ever have to think about USE flags at all if you want. It should come out like what you'd get in any binary distro.
USE flags aren't just for cutting out parts of an application they're also used for adding additional stuff, you definitely don't want to enable everything

My advice as a new user is to just make sure you have the obvious things set in your make.conf
like defining VIDEO_CARDS and INPUT_DEVICES, so then the USE flags will automatically be calculated to eliminate support for the things you don't need

Beyond that I would say just scan the list when updating (like when you run emerge -DuvaN world). You don't have to look at all the USE flags, just look at the ones that show up in yellow (those are the use flag changes)
Like I said it's not vital that you do this, but you never know when you might see something like "oh fuck bluetooth? I don't fucking need bluetooths upport" and enable/disable if you want.

>Is there a way to automate updating the USE flags based on additionally emerged softare?
the -U option in emerge. This is usually done when doing a full update and it automatically calculates the USE flags.
>>
>>58832093
Your hardware might be too new. Try Fedora, it has updated software. Arch is also an option but harder to install for a beginner.

Actually you might also want to take a look at the USE flags for any packages that show up with the N (for New dependencies)

But like I said, it's really not a big deal. Only make changes if you know it's what you want, otherwise just let portage do what it wants.

This is kind of what I'm trying to understand. I thought USE is telling emerge to compile additional parts of ABI for applications. If I don't care about compiling time, where do I not want to use all the available USE flags for every application installed. I'm actually looking at the opposite of cutting stuff out. I'm looking at building everything available and automating it so I never have to think about it. Still reading so sorry if this seems silly. The gentoo docs I've encountered thus far have a lot of "do this and then this" but very little "here is a block diagram overview and design philosophy"

Is it something about my flash drive itself? I'm using a cheap 2gb surplus USB flash drive.

Someone said it could be with my video card but I changed the vga=xxx a few different times during launch but I still get the error. I've searched high and low for a situation similar to mine on the web, and I can't find anything. Just makes me want to cut my legs off in frustration.

I'm not sure I understand your confusion

It's basically like portage treats USE flags almost as dependencies in their own right. When setting up Gentoo you pick a profile (like the desktop profile) and, just like any other distribution will compile packages in a specific way for their distro, Gentoo devs select a default set of USE flags for each package individually that should be good enough for any desktop user.

So portage + the Gentoo developers do almost all of the USE flag work for you.
Even if you don't ever do anything at all with USE flags, your system is going to be adding/removing USE flags all the time according to updates and new software you install. It's really simple.

The only role you play in all of this as a user is that portage gives us the option of saying "Hey you, portage, don't ever give me fucking bluetooth" or "Hey portage, ALWAYS compile my shit with utf-8 and CJK support" or "add THIS component to just this particular package only for this specific version" and portage will listen to you and calculate your preferences against the defaults.

I think you're just overthinking it. The best way to learn is just to dive in and start using it on a daily basis. You'll find that there's really not nearly as much to think about as it seems.

Hi there /fglt/,

I'm having a myriad of problems with Xubuntu right now, and I'd appreciate some help with them.

1. For starters, I'm having trouble setting up my dual monitor display correctly. I would like for my primary monitor to be on the right, and my secondary monitor to be on the left. However, despite setting the monitor on the right as the "primary" monitor, the monitor positioned on the left always seems to be considered the primary monitor. Although I can move my panels and desktop icons to the monitor on the right, the login manager always appears on the leftmost display, new desktop icons always appear on that display, etc.

2. For some reason as of late, on boot, GRUB occasionally doesn't load on startup. It seems somewhat random--sometimes it shows up, other times my PC boots straight into Windows.

3. Also as of late, on boot, the first time opening Thunar seems to be very slow. It takes about 10-20 seconds to open. From that point on, it opens up instantaneously until reboot. Furthermore, Thunar seems to crash CONSTANTLY when conducting file transfers.

4. Also recently, my color settings (Nvidia) don't seem to be applying on boot. They seem to apply as soon as I open the Nvidia X server settings, for whatever reason.

I'm honestly considering switching to another desktop environment. These small problems just seem to keep continuously cropping up (I'm aware that some of these problems aren't specific to the DE, but I've had a host of other issues as well, such as audio problems and constant system errors that I haven't gotten on other buntus). Does anyone else have this much grief with XFCE? I used Unity for a while (yeah, I know, I know), and it was considerably more stable in my opinion.

I have a feeling your primary display and your nvidia color settings (1&4) might be loaded on daemon start and you should make sure that is loaded automatically upon boot.

Never heard of intermittent grub issues like that, it sounds weird, or as if Windows is your default selection in Grub and sometimes you aren't paying close enough attention and let Grub boot the default after the timeout.

For 3, this is typical of thunar, and I believe has something to do with network mounts. You can google around for the answer, but one option is running thunar in daemon mode upon startup so that this occurs asynchronously in the background before you ever try to run the file manager.
https://forum.xfce.org/viewtopic.php?id=5959
>>
>>58832605
>>58832728
I also want to mention that the only thing here that is even remotely DE-specific is your Thunar problem, but you can choose to leverage another file manager if you don't like Thunar. Aside from that your issues are with your bootloader and graphics drivers/xorg so moving away from XFCE won't really change anything.

Good luck anon.

Thank you for taking the time to answer all of my questions.

With regards to the first problem, I'll be sure to look into that. I've also read somewhere that Ubuntu always considers the primary display wherever the (0,0) coordinate is among your two monitors, or something like that, which would explain why the monitor on the left always seems to be considered the primary display. Although, I'm not sure how I'd remedy that problem, or if that actually is the problem.

Regarding the GRUB problem, Xubuntu is set as my default selection, which makes it even more of a mystery as to why it sometimes boots straight into Windows. I should probably try boot-repair, I'm sure that would fix the problem.

Regarding Thunar, the fix within the link you sent worked perfectly! Thanks a ton, that was getting on my nerves.

And lastly, regarding XFCE, I suppose it was more of a general complaint rather than necessarily having to do with the problems I mentioned. I dunno, I've used 2 different distros using XFCE across 3 different computers, and just in my passive observation, I felt like they've been very buggy compared to when I've used the same distros with another desktop environment. You're probably right, though, given that so many people, especially here on /g/, seem to love XFCE. It may just be a confirmation bias thing stemming from my inexperience.

Thanks again!

Has anyone ever tried running Debian on an old Geode-based thin client?

I'm looking at grabbing some IBM NetVista n2200s (running 233 MHz NS Geodes) mostly for emulating old IBM mainframe shit using an ultra-minimal Debian install as a base, but I'm open to other options.

Maybe something like TinyCore would be a more efficient option? I'm leaning towards Debian more for compatibility but I'll probably end up building the emulation software anyway.

GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=true
GRUB_TIMEOUT=0

Broadcom is usually the only wireless that won't set up out of the box. You almost invariably have to connect some other way to get it running. When you finally do, it drops all the time, forcing you to disconnect and reconnect to get it running again.

The drivers they provide for their WLAN modules for Linux are of incredibly low quality.

They have a complicated (compared to others which are just "installed by default) set up and the connection quality leaves a lot to be desired.

Basically you want to go either with Intel WLAN chips or Atheros WLAN chips.
Intel ones require proprietary firmware (but they work), Atheros ones are freetard-approved.

This is not entirely true. Linux can revive anything up to a certain point. A T23 is just too damn old. On the other side my Grandpa uses a Pentium 4 2GHz and 1GB RAM and uses Ubuntu MATE. Works perfectly well even in 2017. You probably couldn't even get a modern Windows to install on the 20GB IDE hard drive.

Why in the world would you buy anything that old? You can bring old hardware back to life with Linux but you could just as well have bought a 1984 Macintosh. Seriously though, RMS is a disgusting excuse for a human being. I'm not even talking about his auto-cannibalism here. He's completely anti social (for example he whips his laptop out whenever he doesn't feel like talking to people) and justifies is by saying stuff like "I got work to do".
"I got work to do" is pretty much his excuse for everything. If you look on his "How I do my computing" site you'll notice that, when asked about his opinion on specific software, he often replies something like "Oh, I'd love to try it out but I got work to do".
It's like he thinks of himself as the pope or something. Which is probably why he poses as "St. IGNUcius". That's just ridiculous. If you got something important to say, just say it and don't wrap it up in some pseudo religious bullshit, thinking you're funny. Free Software is by no means a religion to anyone else but maybe yourself.
Also, it seems like he just HAS to be the underdog, the Dark Knight, fighting underground for a cause that he doesn't even deem important.
>But Anon, why would you think he doesn't even care about Free Software?
Because he's just that kind of person that has to be against something and that has to be part of a "misunderstood" minority. Best example is the Open Source movement. While it doesn't differ from the Free Software philosophy in any way (it really doesn't), that's
exactly what RMS is trying to convince people of. Why? Because it has become too big for him to identify with. The term Open Source is getting more recognition than the term Free Software, hence RMS has to come by with phrases like "I have to interject for a moment", just because he wants everyone to know that he is in fact one of the few who truly understand the concept of Free Software/Open Source. The eternal teacher, so to say, only satisfied when he can look down on his little sheeps.

>you don't need -get anymore.
apt and apt-get are two completely different tools (although both are frontends to the dpkg)

It is perfectly acceptable to use apt to instal land remove packages.
However for more advanced settings you'll have to fallback to apt-get as apt doesn't have autoremove, doesn't have --purge etc.

I don't think you get borked installation by mixing the two, so far I haven't had any problems

pdftotext -layout "${1:?}" - | less -r
}

That's what lesspipe does. There's a way for epub too, but I don't remember.

There's something called the net-installer.
You don't need to remove Unity, you can just choose the Xfce session from the display manager.

what's the simplest git repo I can use to backup personal dotfiles (must be private)

gitlab is "too much"

That said, we have standards for everything (XDG, GNU, POSIX, etc to name some), but some people may not follow them and it's good that they have the freedom to do so, because it makes improvents possible.

I went from an AMD gpu to a Nvidia gpu but now I can't use the proprietary drivers and nouveau is slow as fuck and does not support hardware rendering.

He's right though.
People should follow conventions, they exist for a reason.

The funny thing is, the github page for html2text lists --help and -h as the correct flags, but the manpage doesn't.
So in this case it's easy to blame the developer being inept or just silly.
