Why aren't you using <pre>? Monospaced fonts are the most readable and it will allow you to format however you want.

Doesn't matter because you can easily convert one to the other to suit your preference. Also the project style guide might stipulate what you should use.

There is no advantage to using spaces.
Tabs allow you to specify their width in your editor.
