Battle station thread

I just sit on the floor with my Thinkpad. Or lay on the couch with it propped up against my bent knees. I don't have any other furniture besides a mattress.
These threads make me feel really weird. I don't understand how you guys have so much shit, and how you know how to make aesthetically appealing living spaces.

anyone regret getting a 1440p monitor? I tried out a 30" 2560x1600 display in anticipation of purchasing a 27" 1440p display and I really didn't see the hype. I feel like having two 24" 1080p monitors would be better than one of each.

I think 4K is better suited for that, since most movies are distributed as 16:9 anyway and lots of big releases are availabe in 4K already.
>>58822701
Yeah but there isn't enough 4K content out there (yet) also while you can buy a good LG 4K IPS monitor, but only in 24 inch. A 29 inch would look like a 32 inch 16:9
> movies are distributed as 16:9 anyway
Wat. Most movies are in 2.35:1 (which is almost identical to a 21:9 monitor)
>>58822752
>also while you can buy a good LG 4K IPS monitor, but only in 24 inch
chink tv in 40"+
>A 29 inch would look like a 32 inch 16:9
Huh?
>Wat. Most movies are in 2.35:1 (which is almost identical to a 21:9 monitor)
My bad, I was only thinking of the Christopher Nolan stuff. You are correct.
>>58822832>Huh
I mean, if you watch a movie on a 32 inch TV there will be black bars on the top and the bottom right? Because you watching a Movie aspect Ratio on a 16:9 aspect ratio (pic related since you mentioned Nolan.)
A 29 inch Monitor would display the same picture in the same size as a 32 inch because no black bars
Sadly 4K TV is not an option for me because I only got HDMI 1.4
The one last thing I need to finish my speaker platforms is on the way, taken very long to get shipped.
But.. The item should weight around 400grams. The package weighs 7kg. This might be lucrative!
I just got my 4K TV!
Must try to find those weird VESA desk stands on ebay to get the TV a bit lower..
I was afraid that the input lag would be horrible compared to my other monitors, but it's okay, no problemo.

>>58825292
My desk is pulled from the wall, I should probably pull it back further desu. Where I sit in my mix position provides decent imaging anyways. It's a good balance of space / practicality.
>>58825157
Thanks. Is there anything like an attachable harness that I can use to suspend my wires from the back of my desk so they're not touching the floor?

they're like twice as wide as they're supposed to be.
How do I go about improving my battle station? Going to be shopping for a new desk this week so I won't be using the cheap poker table/ wood table combo. Also need a lot more desk space for developer reasons.
>>58825561
My position is within the equilateral triangle of both monitors.
There isn't anything about what the ideal speaker separation is and this set up is one of the better sounding configurations that I've ever had them in.

your best bet is to hang a rug on the right hand wall, first order reflections are the killer in your situation.
Maybe behind the speakers too, rugs on the wall look cool anyway so it's win win.
>>58825769
Yeah. It's a little ways out, but I'm going to be shopping there first. Need to remodel my entire station to get ready for a big developing project. Might get me a 30in monitor, too, at some point. The monitor on the far left is just a TV for playing video games on, but it's distracting so I think I need to buy a TV stand or smaller table to put it on to free up developer space. It shouldn't be next to my computer screens like that.
Overkill or just right? Can most more

You know what I just noticed? Interstellar as well as The Dark Knight swich aspect ratios from scene to scene. There are some that display fullscreen on the tv, while others have black bars.
>>58823113
>What leds/lights are you using?
Standard 5050 LEDs. One strip with a 24 key remote, one with a rf one and a set of those you put behind the TV with 44 keys. Also a Philips Aura to the top right of the screen and one sitting on the cabinet behind my right shoulder. The only normal lamp is an Ikea SÃ¥ngen to my right.
>Is that Record/the new Reason?
It is Reason 9.2. The two programs were merged some time ago.
>Is it good?
I like it a lot. Would recommend. I'm not actually sure it's the best tool to make some of the genres I'm trying to produce, so I tried FL studio for a while, but found the GUI offputting.
Then again all the DAWs a so generalistic, you can make anything with them, it's just that you're used to using one and not the other.
>>58825786
Nice setup! A pair of Genny's too, nice. I really like that desk. Do your plants not block your tweeters? :)
I actually have a curtain that I slide closed which nulls the HF reflections quite a bit. I also have a fabric postboard on my left hand side and my wardrobe behind me. Open up my wardrobe and slide my curtains when I mix. It also helps that my ceiling is non-symmetrical. For anything critical I use my ER4-XR's or just use my university Studio.

Disclaimer
Of course your needs are your own and I don't know how you use your space.
I would organise those monitors, maybe get vesa pole mounts and pole stands either for desk or free standing (I dont trust shit mounted to walls)
I'd find a way to use only one keyboard, some have switches to let you choose what computer you're using it on.
That lamp is awesome but do you really need it? Surely you don't need it in front of one of your computers? And if that has worked out fine then perhaps you don't need that computer.
You need a kitchen table more than a desk, they would usually be in the size and lengh that would suit you the most because you have so many monitors, the kind of desks youd be looking at to suit everything you got will run up in price a lot, a kitchen table is cheaper and bigger than a desk and probably even sturdier than a desk, go for the marble top for the win. You can probably find nice kitchen tables on craigslist for nothing.
That blue light seems to contradict your lamps existance, get rid of one of them.
Then cable management, zip ties are cheap, velcro strips are a little bit more if you need flexibility of getting cables out.
Hope that helps and you can into organising a little.
>>58828990

How comfortable are those kinds of chairs, with the stretched netting for a backing? I think they look good, but I didn't see one in Office Depot to sit it, are the comfortable for long amounts of time? Does the netting stretch out after a while?
>>58833031

>>58833031
how is that mesh-backed chair? Is it comfortable and durable?
>>58833174
way more comfortable. greatly reduces strain on neck or back. regular computer chairs aren't very ergonomic unless you're constantly making an effort to sit up straight.
>>58833296
So is there a reason I shouldn't buy this chair?

SteelSeries Rival 100 Alchemy Gold
Very good for the cheap price. I bought 2 more as backups when they went for sale at a stupid low price. Keep in mind that only the colored versions are glossy while the black ones have mild soft touch rubber. (I like glossy plastic because it's very easy to clean and it doesn't wear out like my previous mouse, Mionix Naos 3200).
>>58833280
It's an IKEA Markus.
I wouldn't say it's "comfy". Think of it more as an office chair than something you watch a movie in. It's definitely not a bad chair and I can easily sit 10 hours straight if I have a pillow under my butt. I would say the biggest disadvantage is the padded seat, or lack thereof. But the pillow really helps. Maybe this is because I'm a very thin person.
I think it's durable. (I have the "leather" version but there are textile/fabric versions aswell).
But my advice is to always "try before you buy". Go to an IKEA store and sit in it for a couple of minutes.
>>58831473
Well.. of course it's mine. I'm "CTO" of a company with exactly one IT employee. So it's just a title thing.
I also run a couple of my own sites on the side.
But all the monitors are for a combination of video editing and coding. And because, like I said, I've seen too many movies where the protagonist has too many monitors. (They really are useful tho.)
>>58833031
wow those monitors look stunning, mid informing me where you purchased the desk from. or was it custom?.
>>58833477
It's an IKEA kitchen laminate counter top called "Säljan". They apparently stopped making the exact model but they have new products under the same name (altough I can't guarantee they are exactly the same because it's hard to tell from the pictures). My desk has a dark wooden effect but it can be anything from brushed aluminum to marble effect because it's laminate.
I bought the table straight from the IKEA store for only 345 SEK ($40) here in Sweden but I know for a fact that it costed like $59 on the ikea.com american website back then.
It's 74 inches long and weighs a lot. So a leg in the middle to prevent sagging is recommended. (You can cut it yourself because two included side panels is included for you to iron on afterwards. Or you can have IKEA themselves cut it by your custom meassurement but they said that would take like 4-6 weeks because it's done at the factory or something).
this is the sticker under the desk. Not sure if it says anything specific about my exact model.
The portrait monitor is a Dell U2414H and the landscape one is an AOC Q2577PWQ (1440p, muh dick). Just beware of Microsoft Windows automatically setting the scaling to 125%, making everything larger (images become distorted if the web browser/photo viewer isn't "scaling aware". Photoshop will display correct images while Chrome/Firefox will display them as zoomed in/enlarged images). I have mine set at 100% scaling (which means no scaling at all, and I can read text just fine on this 25" monitor)
Sorry for wall of text.

>>58833753
5.11 tactical tmt a2, altough I haven't had it for that long. I bought it mainly for the cool strobe effect mode kek. My other flashlight is an Inova X1 (apparently there are many versions and I don't know which one I have), very tiny and durable that has survived many drops on concrete and even a dip in my water drinking glass. The only gripe with it (and it can be completely bypassed) is the "dual function" button cap. It can be rotated/screwed on to make permanent light (that's the function I use all the time). And the second function of the button cap is the temporary light mode, in which you just press it, but since the travel distance is very short, it becomes exhaustive in the long run (and the light is turned off the instant you let go of the cap). By using the twist/turn method instead, you bypass this and the light is left on when you let go of the cap.
Both of these flashlights have high and low light modes which is neat.
And this is coming from someone who bought those cheap flashlights at the general technology/computer store which died after just one fucking week all the time with very careful use.

No problem, my dude. Although I'm not an expert in this area so you should at the very least read or watch a review or read customer comments. Best is to try them out in a store, in my opinion. I did it with both of my flashlights. But there isn't a great amount of selection in the physical stores in my country so yeah.
I'm sure there are better stuff for cheaper price but whatever. It works for me :^)

>What headphones I would recommend really depends on what you want out of them.
I use the M50 because they're comfortable as fuck, have (subjectively) good quality audio, and are relatively durable.
It's the only headset I've ever used that I can use with my glasses on for long periods of time.

How about using the cable management hole in your monitor stand instead of routing your cables around it? Or watering your plants from time to time, they look sick.

Water them more frequently and less water at a time. If you can collect rain water, use that. Some plants really hate tap water.

Nope. You can only use it as ReWire slave from a DAW that supports VSTs.

Not really. If I were unable to make music without VSTs, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be able to _with_ them. As with photography: It's the producer making the music, not the synths.
