/g/ is there such a thing as a gsm base station? 'Base station' using the traditional definition. Like a HAM/CB base station. I don't want something that mimics a tower. I just want something that can be hooked to remote antennas on a 50 ft tower to get signal.

Sure. GSM is the old,old standard. There have been basestations set up at Burning Man.

I specifically said I don't want something that minics a tower.... That whole talk is about minicing a tower.

If GSM is old what about 3G UMTS/W-CDMA or LTE? I'd like something compatible with AT&T.

Your best bet would be looking for a phone that can use an external antenna. I think the last phone I had with a port for one that wasn't under the battery door was a Motorola Razr though and with smartphones eliminating the removable battery they might have eliminated external antennas all together. I'd love it if a company made a modern bag phone considering they would output at a higher power than regular phones and were designed from the start to use external higher gain antennas, as I find myself driving in a lot of rural areas with spotty coverage.
