WD's Black line seems like fucking highway robbery in Canadaland (and probably elsewhere) for anything over 2 TB. Who the fuck in their right mind would pay $290 for a 4 TB Black when you could have a Seagate 4 TB for $170 or a WD Blue for $185, or a Blue SSHD or Red for $200?
>>
>>58803599
>implying the seagate wouldn't shatter, explode, catch on fire, take money from your credit card, fuck your wife, and explode again in the time that it takes to boot up your computer
WD is expensive for a reason, i would rather pay 100 more and not half to fucking RMA it every month than pay less for a seashit slapped together drive that barely even spins up
>>
>>58803636
Feel free to take a shit on Seagate if you like, but this part still stands:

Enterprise and enthusiast meme

It's the same reason we have first class on airplanes

It's called marketing and it works. At the end of the day every single drive has a chance to fail.

>Feel free to take a shit on Seagate if you like, but this part still stands:
why buy an i7 if you can just buy a 9590? those are, after all """8 core"""" cpus, no?
>>
>>58803649
This has to do with performance also. WD Black has high performance compared to blue.
>>
>>58803661
But does having two CPUs instead of one make your CPU more accurate? No

quantity > quality for hard drives
>>
>>58803684
Meaning what? Will even an enthusiast experience much of that difference in day to day use?

Most normal humans with social lives aren't backing up terabytes of porn every day to their gentoo file server.

Photos and videos ..
>>
>>58803642
Black has a longer warranty i think?
>>
>>58803642
People who want that same hard drive to function 10 years from now. I got 20 year old WD HDDs still spinning.

Just don't buy their laptop drives, LOL.
>>
>>58803684
The last 1TB Blue was faster than the Black.
>>
>>58803688
are you legitimately an autist or just trolling?whats the point of having 5 shitty drives in raid instead of having one, fast, high capacity drive? I know your CYBERPOWER™©(rights reserved) has 3 seagate 250 gig 1k rpm drives in raid, but that doesn't mean that everyone else has the same needs, nor the same experience. Also why the fuck are you on /g/ if you're complaining about price? Why don't you just go buy a ps4 and stfu?

I don't doubt it, I put my 1 TB Black through all sorts of abuse (recording, and pagefile so the latter doesn't rape my SSD) and it still chugs on like a trooper. That said I've been looking to replace it with something bigger (that isn't a dirt cheap Seagate external drive, those are nice but again, external and 5400 RPM) and at the price it's up for, it really feels like a meme. Why wouldn't I or anyone else go for Red instead even if I'm not using it in a dedicated NAS setup?
>>58803705
That might be part of it, 5 years as opposed to 3. Is it really worth $100 more? I could be fine with $50. That, or it could be just the Canuckistan dollar being a piece of shit and our central bank wants to deliberately keep it a piece of shit (???). But surely it can't be that much better in the US/Freedomland, could it?
>>
>>58803795
Just use a credit card

Bam extended the warranty by one year
>>
>>58803767
if one drive fails in a Raid setup with a good drive, the sectors can be recovered easily enough, and all the data can be collected from it. Have fun collecting 1/4 chunks of every single piece of data off of multiple drives.
>>
>>58803807
That too, why bother when I could just have AmEx or Visa/MasterCard give me a year or two on a Black/Red themselves in the event it shits the bed?
>>
>>58803810
Can you explain what you mean? You raid on a single drive ???

>>
I've been using a Seagate 1Tb for 4 1/2 years and a Seagate 3tb for 3 years and have had zero issues, they've worked flawlessly.
>>
>>58803599
Buy refurbished drives. They are MUCH cheaper and work flawlessly.
>>
>>58803795
>and our central bank wants to deliberately keep it a piece of shit (???)

We're an export nation, low dollar keeps us super competitive.

Same reason China goes crazy devaluing theirs.
>>
>>58804197
Though I'm open to buying refurbished on most of anything else, I probably wouldn't risk it with a hard drive.
>>
>>58803636
Seagate is a good brand. I haven't had a single drive die on me ever. Hitachi on the other hand is a piece of shit company, had 2 drives die on me already. And its the same fucking price as seagate. I've got about 10gb of seagate drives atn
>>
>>58803599
For a normal consumer a WD black isn't the optimal choice regarding price / gb. You're much better off with an SSD (System) Disk + WD Blue (Storage) combination. That's what those disks are for after all. Before SSD, you'd go for a black + blue combination.

Now another example, if I had the choice to upgrade my laptop single disk drive from let's say 1TB to either a 4TB Black or a 1TB SSD, I might chose the Black due the price / gb. and the Black being reliable and fast enough if storage was a priority, else I'd go for a SSD.

So yeah, there still is a spot for a WD Black, just not that big anymore and it will be smaller each year as the SSD option will become cheaper.

NOW, if you think seagate is valiable option, you're just a retard.
>>
>>58804160
seagate had a VERY bad failure problem around the 1.5tb drive time, those things had a 50%+ fail rate, but something happened and they got their shit together, and now their drives are fairly reliably, even in the worst case scenario the one black something company, where they use fuckloads of old referbed drives, has less% of seagates fail then wd drives.

But then again, I haven't looked at a performance drive in years, I tend to get 5000~ rpm drives as with the density getting high enough, read time is fast enough when not fragmented and any games that REALLY benefit from ssds go onto an ssd.
>>
>>58803599
>not hoarding Ironwolf's
>>
Or you could just buy a 4TB SSD for $1400.

Do not trust HDD brands, trust models, in pic related you can see how both Seagate and WD have bad drives.

>2.77% failure rate

It could be worse, like the 5.49% of the WD60EFRX which its also a NAS drive.
>>
>>58804644
HGST is good but too expensive. I got these for 19$/TB.

As for the data? I don't know if some of those sample sizes are large enough to compare to the ones with higher rates and higher sample sizes. What's the standard error on the estimate? Likely as large as the estimate itself...
>>

>>58805086

>>

>>
I have a 2TB Black as my dedicated vidya drive with Windows on my M.2, and in comparison to shit I've thrown on the 1TB Blue in there for storage, the Black loads games noticibly faster, heavily-modded stuff with a lot of loose resources like Bethesda shit will probably be the biggest night and day experience

That probably still makes it shit for 75% of the people enraged at Blacks currently, but they have their niche uses that matter to the target audience

If you wanna talk about meme drives, THIS is a meme drive

WDB user here (FZEX) and I couldn't be happier. Makes a bit of noise sometimes when loading large files but the speed compensates. It's definitely not as noisy as people make it out to be.

protip: it needs proper ventilation in the case though. IT can easily get up to the high end of its operational temperature if ambient reaches ~27C.

I'm pretty sure WD black failure rates have been rising.

Either way I wouldn't pay that much for 4 TB. Not that I understand why you would need a fucking 4 TB HIGH PERFORMANCE drive unless you suffer from crippling fucking autism (AKA gamer who swears he regularly plays 4 TB of games)

1 SSD for OS + 1 TB Black for storage + games, externals as more storage + backups. Werks perfectly
>>
>>58810850
Tbh he's a leaf. A 4tb wdb costs $180-240. That's probably $300+ in CAD. Not WD's fault their currency is shit.
>>
>>58804247
Can somebody explain this to me, how does devaluing your currency does good to your economy?

>>
>>58810980

>>
>>58810980

Also it keeps your labor cheap, the workers making the goods that the export based economy is based on are paid in artificially de valued currency.
China has been doing this for decades with US currency.
