Been designing on a Windows at home and on a Mac at work. Looking to get a MacBook or an iMac to get access to Sketch. Any recommendations on which year iMac I should be looking at?

I put macOS 10.12 on my home server because I can. What should I use it for as an audio engineer? I already have my NAS backing everything up via CCC on an hourly basis
>>
I have an old macbook that I'm running as an in-home media server.

I recently dug out a few old mac laptops. They include two very old Macbooks (ie 2008 or so), and the first Powerbook (sans battery.)

One of the Macbooks wouldn't power on, so after much troubleshooting I just ripped the harddrive out for eventual repurposing.
The other functions while plugged in, battery doesn't hold a charge. One of the keys is broken and depresses randomly.

Powerbook functions but most likely needs a good cleans; fans sound like they're shitting themselves. No battery, and the keyboard is totally fucked.

I also have an old Macbook with a non-functioning display. I had previously used it hooked up to a VGA, but it looks like my adapter is on its way out, and I'll be damned if I'm ever going to give Apple money for a dongle ever again.

Any suggestions on what to do with these machines to actually make them, you know, useful?

>>

Why are you putting a skin on the trackpad? It's made of glass, its not going to get wear marks.
>>
>>58803749
I thought about it, since I have the hardware, but why would I actually want to do that?
If I'm going to have an POSIX based system, why not actually have a good one?
>>
>>58803763
aesthetics + fingers get oily sometimes, same reason why I use keyboard cover.
>>
>>58803774
true, if you something like a POSIX system try getting a newer version of the imac, which I don't recommend if your fine with your Imac
>>

I fished all of these things out of my parents garage, and with the ones that were function, immediately installed a decent OS.

If anyone else has suggestions on how to make the partially-functional *books useful, I'd love a little project for them.

Question: Should I buy a 2015 Macbook pro or a 2016 Macbook pro or a custom build PC for gayming?

>link to the custom build pc

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/m6pzWX
>>
>>58803922
Grow up and stop being a gayman.

If you plan on using the MacBook with external monitor, get the 2015.

If you're just going to use the laptop by itself, 2016.

Once USB-C monitors are reliable, plentiful and cheap, then get a 2016.

Nice background.

Whats your Hackintosh experience like? I had one back in 2012, but eventually got tired of all the hoops I had to jump through for every OS update.
>>
>>58803965
I do have a monitor already so thats not really an issue, I could always buy usb C to VGA for the 2016. I only have a budget of a $1050
>>
>>58803965
Life gets so much better for computing when you give up the gayman. You don't have to make stupid choices for peripherals and components based on the fact it might effect your FPS/K:D/APM whatever. Not needing some housefire GPU in every machine is liberating as fuck.

As an audio engineer im ready to go full macbook for my entire computing needs but the docks haven't really solved the multi monitor issues I have. I want one type-C out and to be able to hook up 3 monitors. A little bit more maturation and it should be there.

It also allows you to fully jump ship to macOS without any downsides, i ditched my wincuck partition on my hack and now its mad comfy. Ive learned so many more shortcuts and workflow optimizations that make my computing smoother which lets ideas flow better when im working creatively

Poorfag wincucks don't know what they are missing by not having a hackintosh.
>>
>>58803999

Nice trips.

I installed El Capitan about a year ago. Prepared a flash drive (original image from the App Store, had to use a VM), nuked my SSD and spent next the whole day googling on my phone trying to make things work. It was a pain in the ass to set up with the most difficult parts being sound and PS/2 keyboard.

The system was rock stable ever since I installed it. Everything works just as on the real thing. The OS survived all the updates and the upgrade from El Cap to Sierra. It's a really good experience, and I'm actually surprised how compatible my system turned out to be - I got lucky with the hardware.
>>
>>58804097
>next the whole
my bad
>>
>>58804014
Go with a 2015 then, USB-C adapters are still all wonky. You'll save some money too.
>>
>>58804044
Check those dubs.

Totally agree. The gayman aesthetic disgusts me as well.

I'm with you on the USB-C/TB-3 docks. The idea of one cable docking would be a dream come true. What I really want is a monitor with integrate USB-C dock though.

Gayman Wincucks don't actually do work with the computers. They just play games and enjoy tinkering with their half-working contraption. They don't like the idea of a Mac that JUST WERKS, because they'd have to do something constructive with their lives.

I find that my consciousness is very effected the devices I use daily. I used windows for all my life until about 2011. My mind becomes a mess working windows because by nature windows is not logically set up to "flow" between tasks. The thing about windows is its a cluttered operating system. Any functionality needs to be added via third party software since the baked in functions are absolute garbage.

If I need a backup/migration solution I need some third party shit thats going to have conflicts and make a fucking mess of my new PC before I even set my hands on it. I used migration assistant to migrate to a new SSD on my macbook and it took an hour and it nothing changed, I have things to do, im not fucking with my computer for 12 hours over a new hard drive. Wincucks have to wipe their shit every 3 months because registry edits and whatever shits up the entire OS over time.

This is just one example of many, the baked in functions of macOS/iOS are just productive as hell. Cloud sync'ed notes, calendar, reminders is a fucking major boon to becoming a useful high functioning adult.

It really is the peak of computing right now, yes windows can do all the same things. But is it going to be intuitive, smooth and not a rely on a slew of third party shit? Im willing to pay up to not have to battle my computer when its time to work.

One sweet detail about the Apple TV 4. My TV has HDMI-CEC and can be powered on by external devices. The sound base connected to my TV is set to wake on playback. The Apple TV 4 remote can be programmed to adjust volume of anything (IR learning).

So now, I have one remote, it turns on all devices for my TV. Once my Apple TV 4 goes to sleep, all devices go to sleep after 30m.

Its the way TVs SHOULD work.

motherfucker was heating up when doing random tasks and subsequently powering the fan which went full speed.
I opened it and cleaned the dirt out of the fan. however, as I was already 10-15 screws in, I didnt unscrew the motherboard.

thing is while it doesnt heat up that crazy anymore, the fan is still going beserk while seemingly doing random tasks which shouldnt put much stress to the system.

should I repaste the cpu?

Anyone had any experience running Unity5 on a recent macbook?

I need to upgrade my laptop, and I am a big heavy handed dude, so I want a laptop which will not fall apart after a year of use. I also use Unity a lot, so want laptop I can at least use for light development work and demonstrating projects when I am not at home.

It is hard to decide between trying to go lower price and lower performance, or just going fuck it and buying a 2015 retina MBP.

I hear the newest 2016 versions are fraught with hardware/software problems such as the keyboard keys failing quickly, red lines all over the display, various issues with the ports etc. and honestly, while I am very aware future proofing is impossible, I would like to use any laptop I get for at least 4 years.

No, but I'll describe a few.

Bought an Air for girlfriend in 2012. Looked new when she got it. Uses it regularly for browsing, email, paying bills and some writing. Still looks great.

Bought Air for brother in 2012. Looked brand news when he got it. Uses it for browsing, email, MS Excel, Quickbooks, etc... He dropped it on its corner. Has a dent, but still functions perfectly.

Bought a quad-core Mac mini in 2014. Looked brand new when I got it. Used it for Xcode, VMWare Fusion and Handbrake encoding. Sold it last year to fund a iMac 5k purchase.

4 Years ago i bought a MacBook Air for school. Its still running fine and looks great. Was my first apple product and i got hooked. Since last year i somehow managed to get a job as a sys admin with only macbooks in the company (of course linux running on the servers). Dunno, never gave a fuck about all the hate. 4-5 years ago I dropped my iPod touch (I think 4th generation) and it wasn't able to charge if it was on. Some months later it died completely (it had a pretty big crack on the right side below the screen where I, smart kid, put tape) I think because of dust getting inside. They are likely selling them because they want to upgrade to the new form factor retina macbook.

If it's just for classic games and casual use, you've gotta get the classic. $250 - $300 for the full machine, charger, and an SSD. You get a shit ton of ports, express card slot, removable battery and hard drive/RAM

Linux is easier on a Mac because even the proprietary drivers (wifi, touchpad) are inculuded by defualt.

This model is the late 2008 MacBook Pro, even has a discrete GPU. After I upgraded to an SSD it performed better than my 2014 MacBook Air

What does this mean? Included where? It's by no means whatsoever easier than on a modern Thinkpad or XPS, even the iSight webcam has proprietary drivers with a bunch of steps you need to do to get it to work.

As far as I know it gets a slightly better CPU score even though the older one is 2.7. This laptop is going to have to last me 5 or 6 years. Should I keep it or get the older one? As far as ports go, I don't use them very often anyway. The 10$ dongle let's me use my mouse for basic games which is all I ever need to plug in desu.

Can anyone tell what is the problem? Logic keeps crashing. Everything worked well when I was recording my song, but now it crashes every time I try to play the song to the end. I can't bounce my song because it crashes. There is something wrong with flex pitch. When i removed flex pitch from my singing tracks, bounce worked well, but when I try to bounce singing tracks into one track with flex pitch on, it crashes. Is there something I can do, or should I just go back to windows and cubase or wait that maybe some day there is an update to this problem?

EDIT: The problem seems to be only in one track... Flex pitch in my chorus track causes crash.

This isn't true though. There are quite a few standard file formats, and typical practices have dealt with this for decades without issue. Also, using Google Docs doesn't solve this problem because their documents don't always render out 100% accurately to the various file formats they allow export of.

>Because storing files in the cloud is more convenient than carrying around a disk.
This has nothing to do with the issue, people have ample storage space for files these days, and email is a thing.

>Because its not 2004.
So like every typical Cloud advocate, you have no real arguments, just appeals to muh nebulous progress.

This is totally frustrating.

I have a new Mac Pro 2014, preconfigured in Apple Store with 64 GB RAM, 1 TB Flash, AMD FirePro D700 6144 MB graphics with 2 monitors (2560x1440) connected by thunderbolt.

After I installed all my applications, for example, Adobe CS6, the machine starts crashing randomly. It can be one hour or it can be 15 mins after restart.

I can be using Safari, or printing a Word document or just installing a new application and the screens will go black and then, chime and the machine restarts and back to the login screen.

I have called Apple Support 3 times and still the situation remains.

So far, I have

* Installed the Apple Update that addressed an SMC issue

* Updated to 10.9.2

* Disabled all Power Saving features

* Reset the SMC

Now I am running in safe mode for the last 15 mins and monitoring the situation.

Will a product specialise from Apple comment and advise?

Thanks.

Hello all,

Using Logic since 9 came out. Saw that X was released so I figured I'd do it right...new SSD OS X drive, clean install of Mountain Lion 10.8, maxed out my 12 core Mac Pro with 64 GB ram, downloaded the new Logic Pro X, re-installed my Native Instruments Komplete 8 bundle. I've been using it trouble-free now for about a week, and loving the update. Until now.

One of my projects crashed and now it won't re-open.

I tried re-booting.

I trashed my preference files and restarted.

I can open Logic Pro, and other project files OK. I opened the Audio Units Manager and disabled ALL plugins, Quit Logic and restarted. Still crashes when opening this project file.

If it's not the plugins, and Logic is working fine otherwise, it must be something to do with a particular audio file within the bin. So I moved the Audio Files folder to my desktop and Skipped the locate files option. Still crashes.

All software is up to date. Any suggestions?

I have a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 1TB external hard drive where I keep a lot of my extra data. Very recently, I can't pin-point exactly when, the hard drive has been causing Finder to crash, most of the time irreparably -- and by irreparably I mean it will crash and I'll try to relaunch it but it won't work, in fact it won't actually relaunch unless I then click the Finder icon (which had no dot under it), after which it will immediately launch into an "Application Not Responding" state.

The reason I believe it is the external hard drive is because I have two computers, both of which have the same problems when doing stuff with the hard drive, and neither have problems when the hard drive isn't plugged in.

It seems as though I could open that document and save it without any apparent problems. I could access my sample library on the external drive through Live's browser and it would seem to work just fine. However, with Live, when I tried to save a project it would immediately crash Live (presumably because Live is trying to save via Finder or something?). I can't remember if Finder would subsequently crash or not, but I remember having terrible issues with Finder crashing around the times I would be using Live and trying to save.

I tried doing a Repair Disk on the external through Disk Utility, but after it was showing only the stripey progress bar down at the bottom and only saying "Verifying and Reparing Disk," for a little while I stopped it and tried to quit Disk Utility, only to have Disk Utility crash and now Finder crash as well.

Another couple of things to note. Finder is not able to copy something to or from the external, or move something from the external to the trash. It will be stuck at 0 percent progress and if I press the x it will say "Stopping" and never go away. However when I do that and then just unplug my external I immediatley get a "Disk removed improperly" dialog and Finder will work again right away.

Does anybody have any experience with this/a solution.

There is a distinction to be made cuck. If Apple products were 'overpriced' then their value would plummet on the used market, like we see with Thinkpads. Apple products are, perhaps, more expensive, but they retain their value much better than other brands. The value they retain over time proves they are not overpriced.

It helps to actually use the proper definitions of words if you're trying to make a point.

I am running a 2007 iMac with OS 10.8.3 and every other app on my system is up to date too. I use Home Sharing to a fully updated Apple TV 3rd gen but I mostly use this for Netflix and haven't watched anything off my home library for a while.

Anyone got any thoughts?

Keynote 6.6.x crashes during startup and it seems because is trying to open the file that was open the last time I used it.

My questions are:

Some recommendations on this site suggest to "trash" the Preferences/com.apple.iwork.keynote..... I've done that, still the crashing continues. How to start Keynote without open this last file - I don't remember what file I had open the last time I used Keynote.
Other recommendation calls for downloading a fresh version of Keynote but, the only option shown in the App Store is Open and not download, therefore, it will open the same, installed version that crashes. Removing the file from the Application folder doesn't do it either.

Any quick help will be greatly appreciated.

Given that your apps are not stored in memory, I have good news for you. They 're still on disk where you left them.
But anyway, if you bought them via the App Store you can download them again free.
Also, you could restore them from your TimeMachine backups.
You do have backups, right?

They already include an adapter for the headphones. Regardless the main form factor won't be getting it back anytime soon, but the SE will be updated eventually but likely keep the same form factor or a very similar one, and the headphone jack by extension.

But what kind of apps are considered "investments", that sounds like you're throwing money away

I will never *ever* buy a Mac w/o a glossy screen - in fact, I'm kinda mad that they don't sell their 5k iMac displays as stand-alone monitors because it's next to impossible to find a good non-matte 27"+ display these days.

Try installing the previous version of OS X. Alternatively, reinstall the os, make a backup and install the applications one by one to see when the crashes start, roll back to the backup until you've found the one thats causing the issue if it's not the system.

Or try a ram test.

Only if you can't into computers. Like I said earlier, only you have it all set up and running, it's as stable as the real thing.

A Hackintosh is more of a hassle than a real Mac, but its still a better experience than Windows or Linux. Pick the right hardware and as long as you wait and check tonymacx86 forums before doing any big OS updates, its as rock solid as a real Mac.

On our work network, we have installed 8 or so identical printers (HP M402n) connected via ethernet, but the iPad Mini's only discover some of them. They have all been set up exactly the same, except for a different bonjour name. All of the IP's are reserved in DHCP and all on the same network. Yet the iPads only see 5 of them when they go to print. Those 5 we can print to just fine, but the other 3 aren't being recognized by the iPads. I've installed the Bonjour Printer Wizard on my Windows laptop and it sees all of them, no problem. We've done a hard reset on the three trouble printers, but still no luck. I checked for updates on the iPads, but they all say up to date. We do have several WiFi AP's throughout the area that the iPads connect to so I was wondering if this could be an issue. FYI, they have about 15 iPads they are using in the same general area.

Any ideas? This is driving the staff crazy, so any help or guidance would be appreciated. I'm not very knowledgeable on Apple products...
