IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Hey guys, I was told you are the experts. Looking for something around €300 for uni work, and the GPU has to be capable of Dota 2. Should not exceed 15.6".
Best I found so far are T4xx or similar with Quadro NVS5400m, but I think that might be a bit slow for Dota. Are there cheap/good models with faster cards?
Or, if there are not, does someone here have this GPU and can confirm if and how well Dota 2 runs? I can't use older benchmarks because the engine changed a lot.

It's good shit. Plenty fast for browsing, runs Open Arena and Tribes 2 and Dwarf Fortress like a champ, etc. With a new chink extended battery pack I get 10-14 hours battery life, and I will get more as soon as I figure out my Wifi card's power savings issue.

T420 has NVS 4200m as an option. The T430 has the 5400m, so you should probably go with that just to be safe. The 4200m isn't a very impressive card, it's only about on par with Ivy Bridge integrated graphics.

It's not so much about the screen size. The X260 comes with resolutions high enough to show a lot of text on screen. If you don't mind small text you'll be fine. I'd go for a T series though because the screen is big enough to work with it without UI scaling, even at 1080p.

I have a T410 that I purchased for $65.

Runs great, excepting the battery life.

I'd like to upgrade it to be able to play some newer games. I am of the understanding that this requires me to get an external, dedicated GPU. I am also aware that I may need to upgrade the CPU, since its chokehold precludes any good gayming.

Hey, I'm looking for a quick rundown on replacement panels for a T420s. Can I follow the exact same guides as for a T420, or is there something that's going to catch me up (different thickness, weird cable routing etc)?

Mostly I just care about viewing angles and black levels, 900p is fine. EE by trade so I'm not worried about getting my hands dirty, but at the same time I'm not really trying to burn all my nights and weekends on it. Money's not a huge issue, anything under about ~$150 all in should be fine.

Why did IBM decided to go for multidirectional pressure sensor for TrackPoint instead of traditional analog sticks that have actual physical movement and tactile feedback, like the ones in psp, ds or even some mid 2000-s cell phones? Sure, they didn't have such miniature technology back in 80's, but the TrackPoint barely progressed it's technology for 27 years already.

>>
>>58803388
Trackpoint is perfect. Don't mess with it.
>>
>>58803441
Yes. BLOW DA FUSE
>>
>>58803388
But analog sticks are operated by thumbs and trackpoint is for index finger, maybe that's the difference.
>>
>>58803388
An analog stick requires more physical travel than the trackpoint, which just requires pressure in a direction instead of actual movement.

Additionally, pointer fingers are less nimble than thumbs.
>>
>>58803530
Put a joystick where middle trackpoint button is, so it will be reachable by both thumbs.
>>
>>58803563
Then you lose the middle button/scrolling functionality, and you still have the problem of more motion putting more stress on the hand. Either way, analog sticks have more physical components, which means more points of failure.

>>
>>58803785
Try recalibrating it. Let it run to literally dead 0%, as in can't even boot to BIOS 0%. Immediately after that's done, plug it in and charge it to 100%, as full as possible. batteryinfoview might be able to automate this like TLP does, I'm not sure.

>>
>>58804984
True. My X220 is holding up pretty good and it's truly ultraportable. If I were to replace my current Desktop I'd probably get a W530 or P50. X series - smaller 12.5", portable, slightly less you can do to modify them (soldered CPU among other things). Tablet versions exist.
T series - Well rounded, made to be ideal to work, still quite portable but it's not the highest design priority. Come in 14" (T4-- models) and 15" (T5--)
W (and P) series - Mobile workstations. Come with high end performance parts like high end CPU (you can put one in the T series anyway if you want) and workstation graphics. Tend to have better screens and shit, not quite as portable.
Other series are mostly shit.

X220, X230, T420 and T430 are probably the most memed right now.

Apparently some company going bankrupt is selling their inventory.
In Denmark the price of a new T460s is 1700$, so this is a deal i can't say no to.

I'm concerned that there has been alot of Linux bug reports on the trackpad, lid closure and such, so i was just wondering if anyone is running any Linux distro on the T460s. Have you been able to resolve the bugs and can you use the card reader?

My flatmate had a x220 out of sheer memery, and he's been so happy with for three months.

But now he says that win10 is slow as fuck. He uses Matlab, dropbox and google docs, and seems like every single input takes a minute to get a response.

Why could this happen? is there anything he can do?

(inb4 install gentoo, or run ccleaner. He needs to use windows, and he behaves well when it comes to take care of computers)

First time poster here. I've read the buyer's guide, and can't really decide on what I want.

My budget is about 400$, and I'm planning to use my laptop mostly to do work, but also some >gayming from time to time. I was thinking about buying the T420, but the specs seem very close to my pic related Dell Inspiron. Would anyone have a better suggestion?

I've put together a guide on differences between different models and generations. There's probably a fair bit of redundancy with existing resources but oh well. I still need to fill in some extra details when I feel like it, but if anyone has feedback I'd be glad to hear it.
>>
>>58807017
The main things you stand to gain are a better processor, better screen and better build quality. If you want to play games consider a T430 if you're just getting a model without a dedicated GPU since the HD4000 should be worth it if you're not using anything better.
>>
>>58807206
Unsoldered CPU means you can remove it and replace it, right?

Thanks for the guide though, it was much easier to understand than the OP guide

>>58807318
I'm probably getting that, since the laptops with dedicated cards under 500$ in the US cost over 700 in Canada.
>>

>Unsoldered CPU means you can remove it and replace it, right?
Yes.

>I'm probably getting that, since the laptops with dedicated cards under 500$ in the US cost over 700 in Canada.
If 15 inches is fine then you could consider a W520 or W530, the GPU will be comparable to the dedicated GPU the T series gets iirc, though you may want to check benchmarks.
>>
>>58807643
>W520 or 530

They might sell for 200 used in the US, but they're about 700 to 1000 in Canada. I'll try to dig up a deal though.
>>
>>58807665
Right, I went to check leaf ebay for prices but didn't realise it was just showing US listings anyway. Just going off listings within Canada, a T430 is sounding like a good bet, though it'd probably still be well worth it to get something from across the border.
>>
>>58807818
I got one in my local Best Buy apparently, I'm gonna look there. There is a guy selling W530s for 400$, but he's in Ottawa and I'm in Montral. Thanks for the tips.

AMD wanted to update the graphics drivers in my W500, so I went for it. It turned my display black. This happened the last time I went for them two years ago, so I regret eveything now.

I know this is probably more fitted for sqt but do I have any recourse besides forcing the PC in bios to use integrated gfx (intel) over discrete (AMD)? I got my drivers through Windows Update, this recent update was from my forgetting to disable AMD bloatware from starting on PC boot.
>>
>>58808469
Never mind, automatic restore point made Jan 31st, at best I'd updated programs between then and now. Going for it.

>>
>>58808469
>Updating trough windows update
Why the fuck you thouht that was a good idea?

This is one of the reason most people turn them off.

Boot in safemode and do a system restore and or uninstall them.
>>
>>58803178
Jesus. I hope things turn out okay.
>>
>>58808598
Sorry, I think you misunderstood- I got the appropriate drivers through Windows Update. While the AMD stuff that fucked me was also included, I could've disabled them- the AMD addons are at fault. And I have disabled Windows Update. In fact I haven't updated since batch updates dropped (using 7), though I wish to when I'm more informed on telemetry removal with them.

Yeah, doing a system restore. Dunno how to u install them specifically, or if they overwrote anything, and this way I don't have to possibly deal with Windows Update again to get my old drivers back. Cheers.

That is a modern consumer laptop that costs $1,100 brand new.
These threads mostly focus on ~2008-2011 era business-class laptops that were ~$3000 when new but now cost <$300.

Many of us have been burned by consumer-grade laptops and their crappy build quality over the years and will now only buy business grade laptops as a response.
The standard meme suggestion is to just get a t420 or x220. They feel great but won't have the horsepower that one has if you really want to play xxx_Modern_Welfare_xxx on the train

Could be "Windows Rot". Not sure how you fix this besides reinstalling, which is not what I am recommending. I would honestly say to anyone I care about that they should just use GNU, but I guess I don't know your situation or his. I suppose it would be worth checking temps, memory/CPU usage during slowdowns, if anything weird is running in the background, and I think Windows has something called "Event Viewer" or something that should have info logged about any major issues.
>>
>>58803388
Trackpoint is way better than a joystick.

With a trackpoint pressure = cursor speed, simple as that - you're not even thinking about acceleration. Push harder to go faster, and in order to change direction you just apply pressure for a different direction - the nub is so small you don't even move your finger. With a joystick in order to reverse direction you need to roll the whole joystick from pointing in one direction to another, and as you do this it's still performing acceleration of some sort. You overshoot and you have to roll it back again. The whole thing requires knowing the tension on the spring and exactly where you hold the joystick should be pointing in order to have a certain speed, which very often isn't linear.

If you're in some third world country (Aus, NZ, Canada, Brazil etc) thats an okay price.

If you're in the US that's not. You're almost always better off just buying a stripped down pad with a valid Win7Pro COA but no HDD or battery and upgrading it yourself. At 500 GB there's a *chance* that it's a modern drive, but spinning rust still sucks ass, and you should just assume that any battery on the used market has <10% life remaining, regardless of what the seller says.

Pick up a stripped model for like $100 and go to town on it. It's pretty unlikely that the previous owner made the EXACT same price/performance tradeoffs that you would have made and installed 2017 parts in it. Literally the only thing you need to pay attention to is the CPU, since I'm pretty sure those aren't upgradable on most pads

X201s or X201. The i5 in the X201 is good enough for modern day average load computing, and the i7 in the s version is equal performance while being a full 10 watts cooler. Slap the X201s motherboard into an X201 and put the X201 fan onto it and you'll never worry about thermal throttling again.

Obviously I'd need to spend a bit of money to upgrade the RAM but I've already got a spare SSD so storage isn't an issue. Would you guys recommend purchasing this Thinkpad?
>>
>>58818829
Excellent price. I'd jump on that shit asap. Used T440 are still going for around that price, even.
>>
>T440
>T450
chinktops, why bother?
>>
>>58818797
by not spending money frivolously
>>
>>58818829
You can get a similarly specced one from the US shipped over for much the same price, but since it's new and not coming half-way round the Earth it's especially good. I don't suppose there's more where it came from?

>>58818797
>How do you guys deal with the wait?
By continuing to do research into laptops all the while till you start fretting about whether you made the right decision. For example are you sure an extra $100 for a W530 wouldn't have been a better choice?
>>
What's a new laptop that has the build quality and design of old ThinkPads? I don't really care about specs beyond at least quad core and SSD, and any reasonable price is ok
>>
>>58819213
If they made something like an older Thinkpad, but with a real keyboard and a nice ARM processor giving 40+ hours of battery...
>>
>>58819227
>ARM processor
yep. because a laptop has to be useless.
>>
>>58818797
You'd have more reason to be excited if the build quality was anything like the old IBM machines,

>>
>>58819265
Aren't modern ThinkPads garbage? As in build quality isn't nearly what it once was, and Lenovo installs shitware, and the screens are still disappointing?
I've never owned a recent one so correct me if I'm wrong. Specs do sound nice so I may get one of the build quality is still sturdy.
>>
>>58819279
>ThinkPad made after 2006
>IBM build quality
Pick one
>>
>>58819279
The impression I'd gotten was that it was actually reasonable, if just because they had no reason to force it to be compact. Correct me if I'm wrong though, that's mostly from check a few reviews.

>>58819290
Build quality is comparable to other brands I guess, obviously not IBM tier. Shitware shouldn't be a problem because you'll be wiping almost any new laptop. Screens are probably the biggest improvement in new models, but you'll want a more expensive option as always.
>>
>>58819290
Build quality dropped a lot when Lenovo took over and it dropped again when they introduced the Tx30/Xx30 (etc.) line. But still they're pretty good compared to other brands. Screens aren't exactly nice. Even today. Concerning the shitware, this is true. If you're using Windows, you're being spied on. That's a fact.

>>58819304
Pretty much this.

>>58819326
It's reasonable. It's just not as good as IBM. If you've ever used an IBM ThinkPad you'll know. The rollcage is still there but IBM used thicker plastic casing and way stiffer hinges.

I pulled a T43 out for comparison with my T410. The T43 has hinges as floppy as anything newer that's seen as much use as it, and the panels are certainly don't feel as strong just pressing on them with my fingers.

That said you'd never guess just looking at them that the T410 is meant to be a evolutions above the T43, it's much bulkier, and has bigger bezels around the screen. Really the biggest improvement that I've enjoyed with newer models is that taking them apart is less of a clusterfuck - there's less variety in screw sizes so you're not constantly guessing which size fits where if you lose track. Internal layout feels a bit neater as well, though I might just be imagining it since I haven't really dealt with anything older for a while.

wheres the best place to buy factory new replacement keyboards?

i want a used x220 but dont want craigslist guy dried spunk and Dorito dust in my keyboard
>>
>>58819203
W series pads are actually another $250+ so I decided that the T520 is a good cheap option. Also I don't play games so the Quadro would just be a useless heat generator.

>>
>>58819203

>>
>>58819495
They might be more, but you can be getting a FHD screen with them instead of upgrading, making it an effective $100 difference without the screen you bought. The CPU alone might make over $100 if you flogged it off on ebay, not that you would want to downgrade if you bought it. Regardless, if you're not using it for anything performancy then the T520 is a reasonable purchase.

>>58819528
If the advantages of the very latest hardware are going to be worth it to you, then it'd probably be a reasonable choice, a Dell equivalent might be comparable though. If you don't need a high performance workstation then any of the older thinkpads will be solid, but I don't know that you'll have much luck with new shit. Late model thinkpads are still reasonably solid I guess, just nothing like they used to be.

Is it worth spending an extra $50 for an SSD configured x220? What about extra $100?

Is it so hard to figure out? How much the built in SSD is worth by modern standards? How much is the HDD worth to you if you bought one with it and replaced it?

Is the t460p good in terms of build quality/sturdiness? Is it typical neo-Lenovo garbage, or is it worth buying if you have the money?

What do you guys think about the new X1 Carbon?

Shame Lenovo gimped it by giving the OLED screen option and Iris graphics only to Yoga, but seems nice other than those.

Who do we blame for this? Intel for not making better CPUs? AMD for not providing competition so that Intel would make better CPUs? Is it Lelnovo's fault for not obsoleting it? Mobile trend lowering performance requirements? Somebody's got to take the fall for this.

ARM is not useless you x86cuck. I can always tell you Intel shills because you feel the need to, without any basis, shit on ARM because they're killing Intel in the low-power field and Intel will never compete there.

Nice try though.

The express card cover in my X220T finally kicked the bucket.
How I do search the part on ebay? Is there a FRU or I have to replace the bottom case?
>>
>>58820664
The FRU for the expresscard slot seems to be 04W1413 but the only listings I found for it are pretty overpriced just to replace the cover. You could just chuck a blank expresscard in it.

What do you guys think of this?

Brand new sealed box HP Elitebook 820 G1
i5 Haswell
4GB ram / 128GB ssd
£329

Yay or nay?
>>
>>58817301
Oh, I saw it too. If you have another hard drive to swap, you could take the cheaper one, as the only difference is the HDD size
>>
>>58821274
I would stay away from Elitebooks from that era.
Had a 840 G1 with an i5 too. The motherboard was buggy as fuck. Sometimes didn't boot up, sometimes booted. I bought a new motherboard for that computer and even the new motherboard came with a bug that killed it the same day I installed after I put the laptop to sleep. I discovered that wasn't the only with that issues, appears that the batch of i5 motherboards was defective as fuck. 20 firmware revisions and the computer still had issues.
Research well if that model also presents problems.
>>
>>58821332
>840 G1
Jesus christ, this little abomination literally stands 20 meters from my thinkpad right now.
Fucking iGPU crashes all the time, sleep doesn't work properly, finderprint reader is shit (after resume from sleep it spams the login prompt with errors), cancer-tier keyboard, unusable trackpoint, screen bezel unglues itself from the case.
Also cooling system is shit. Avoid it at all costs, unless you want to be a caged cuckold.
>>
>>58821361
meant centimeters.
Anyway, it's a work laptop. I'm happy to always have an explanation to why I'm not doing anything.
How can I do anything when this PoS iGPU interrupts my work all the time?
