Never thought about this but you're right. We use VPN to pass wpad.dat/proxy.pac as DHCP option which points client to squid for webproxy.
>>
>>58798197
VPN is technically a proxy in that you're sending and retrieving data through it. But the protocols are a bit different
>>
>>58798197
VPN is ignorant about anything above layer 3 on the osi model. Proxies are layer 7
>>
>>58801073
this. VPNs are low level proxies. Much more powerful, but also more general.
>>
Not all proxies are unencrypted.

SOCKS5 is a proxy protocol, it operates on layer 5, but it can be encrypted.

traceroute google with vpn off, it'll go through your router/modem then ISP

Hijacking this thread so as not to make another.

I intend to purchase a VPN tonight, and am looking for recommendations. I used to have a copy of the wonderful spreadsheet that outlined the specifics of different VPNs. If anyone can provide that spreadsheet, or provide recommendations for privacy & security focused VPNs, I'd be much obliged.

Linus told me about Tunnelbear.
You could always rent a server like Digital Ocean and use your own
>>
>>58802821
Found the spreadsheet. TunnelBear did not score well.

Proxies are higher layer on the stack and generally require a program to be specifically written in such a way that it can use a proxy.

VPNs are just virtual network connections, they don't even have to be used to route internet traffic. But if they are used for that purpose, everything happens at a lower layer and regular applications don't have to do anything special to use it. For instance I use a layer 2 VPN hosted on my server, not for actual internet traffic but to get access to my network remotely.

Could you link me to the spreadsheet?
>>

In my idiocy, I had not tried entering "VPN Spreadsheet" into my search engine.

Also failed jurisdiction test from aforementioned spreadsheet.

Any other suggestions?
