I'm looking to move on from my DT990 Pro after several years of trusty service. Looking for something with great soundstage/imaging + general fun (v-shape sound signature) and I think I narrowed down to these:

AKG K712 Pro / K7XX

HiFiMan HE400I / HE400S

Philips Fidelio X2

Will any of the above be an upgrade from what I have?
>>
>>58800493
no, a downgrade in your case, the only thing you should consider is the premium version of dt990, which probably isn't worth the extra money or the dt880, which you might not even like more because the v shape is weaker
>>
>>58800299
100% unless you can't comfortably change the volume using the knob (like you only use the range of like a tenth of your amp), in which case I'd say go for 50% or something like that
>>
>>58799598
second hand exists
6xx exists

400i is also an option
>>
>>58800597

Anything at a greater price tier that I should consider then?
>>
>>58800121
Pretty much exactly what they are. Takstar stopped producing the Pro 80/HI2050

ISK is supposedly their parent company or something, but other companies also 'produce' them.
>>
>>58800185
Its irrelevant past a point. You're way past said point. Just leave it default.
>>
>>58800493
K7XX will have a somewhat wider soundstage and better imaging, but other than that they're not really as 'fun' as the 990's. Just stick with your 990's until you want to go into big bucks tier.

What should I consider in the big bucks tier? I've been looking at the MrSpeakers Ether but that'll be for a long-term endgame upon getting a promotion. Anything <$1000? I game 40% of the time and listen to house and trance music the other 60%.

I'm getting fatigued by the brightness of my 990s, but I like them enough that I might just buy the Premium versions and see if the 600 ohm one is a little more tame.
>>

Superlux HD 668B or Samson SR850.
668B for a detactable cable with meh comfort stock or SR850 for better comfort overall with non detachavle cable. Both are the same headphone
>>
>>58800299
>Which is correct
Indeterminate. What "volume" the system controls doesn't have a known decibel taper value.
For a lot of cases, none of that stuff really matters. Read the wiki on gain structure to really get an idea.

>>58801101
>fatigued by the brightness of my 990s
Try equalization.
But, you know...you won't get too much useful help if you can't point out what you want to be changed by your "upgrade".
>>
>>58801272
>can't point out what you want to be changed by your "upgrade".

That's a fair point. I think at the end of the day I've become "bored" of my headphones and want to see what else exists, but I don't have a way of testing anything out to actually know what's viable for me.

I guess I just gotta trial and error this unless any of you live in DC and can tell me where I can find hi-fi cans to test.

The 990 Edition won't really change much of anything as far as sound is concerned. At least, once you get past the sensitivity differences and typical pair variation.
Ether has a lot less of the treble boost, and less of the bass as well.

You could do some trial and error stuff using a parametric EQ. Post the result when you're done fiddling.

What sort of amp/dac would you recommend for HD650's? If one was to go the cheapest for best sound quality. (>200$)
Currently driving them with Xonar Essence STX.
>>
>>58802013
Skip the DAC, your soundcard is going to be good enough. Get a Modi 2 or something of that range and run line out from your STX to it.

A DAC/Amp combo/pairing for $200 will be a compromise. Just get an amp.
>>

>>58802059
None really. I was just interested if I could get more out of the cans, that's all. I've been using these for 7 years now.
>>
>>58802080
>Is there any sort of quality bump I should expect from it?
Yes, though not a huge amount. An amp is an amp. Though 600/650's scale well with better amplification.

>And would it be worth it to spend more $$ to get Vali 2?
Depends if you want tube sound. I personally wouldn't, but you kind of have to hear the difference between solid state and tubes to know if you want them. I'd go with the safe route and get a solid state.
>>
>>58802080
>Is there any sort of quality bump I should expect from it?
Not with a simple load like HD650.
>And would it be worth it to spend more $$ to get Vali 2
You really have to make the evaluations yourself, how much do you consider light-up filaments to be valued as.
As far as sound is considered, not particularly. It's not that different sound even (unless you want to go all magic coat hanger on me)

Thing to note about 668B's. If your head is big along with your ears, they'll be on ear headphones and the super uncomfortable top two plastic parts will be pushing into your head.

I had them for about two years and while they sounded good with velour pads, they fucking hurt to use until I bent the resting pads back with some cards and I relied on the clamp of the headphones to make them stay on my head.

Hoping the meme headphones are comfy when they get here.

Alright, thanks guys. I might think of getting it if I have some extra cash at some point. I was also considering getting some other cans, but I really have no idea where to go from here. Any suggestions on closed back ones?
I haven't used too much on headphones, and rarely buy anything else as is, so might as well have something to look forward to!

Possibly. I've tried silicone ones and foam ones. I suppose the best would be to get those cast ones, but last I checked the closest one was few countries away, so that's a no go. Perhaps I should just find something like Koss Portapro to use on the go..

>>
>>58802987
If you like the frequency response of your SE215's then you probably like a more bassy sound.

DT770 or Brainwavz HM5 should be good.
770's are built better and have slightly tighter bass, but the highs more peaky and sibilant than the HM5's. Both are incredibly comfortable, very good headphones for their price.

DT 770's + the highs EQ'd down would probably be the best option. HM5's if you cant be bothered to EQ.

They're good. Somewhat V-shaped, and quite revealing. Sub-bass is really great. Highs are kinda sharp. I've had the CX98S, not the CX98, but from what I've heard they're similar. the CX98S are also somewhat sharp. Mids are clearer on the CX98S, but the low end isnt quite as textured, and nowhere near as present. Highs aren't as detailed on the CX98S

It doesn't if you're using the DS output, everything gets resampled to whatever you have configured in the Windows mixer
Otherwise you're using the WASAPI or the KS output drivers, they're the only ones that allow for bit perfect outputs, though there should be no audible difference between any of them in not ancient versions of Windows

It's in the output configuration of fb2k, if you can hear other things aside from fb2k then you're not using it

There's no point in changing it since you cannot hear what 96k brings, 48k is the default since that's what movies use

yeah, the cat ears are speakers.

The headphones are okay quality. They're not anything to write home about, but they're better than any pair of earbuds I've ever had. My biggest gripe is that if you crank the speakers to max they really distort shit, but I hardly ever use them.

I feature I really like is that they light up. Cars are a lot more careful around me when I'm wearing them at night.

SOFAlizer uses head-related transfer functions (HRTFs) to create virtual loudspeakers around the user for binaural listening via headphones (audio formats up to 9 channels supported). The HRTFs are stored in SOFA files (see http://www.sofacoustics.org/ for a database). SOFAlizer is developed at the Acoustics Research Institute (ARI) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.

To enable compilation of this filter you need to configure FFmpeg with --enable-netcdf.

The filter accepts the following options:

sofa
Set the SOFA file used for rendering.

gain
Set gain applied to audio. Value is in dB. Default is 0.

rotation
Set rotation of virtual loudspeakers in deg. Default is 0.

elevation
Set elevation of virtual speakers in deg. Default is 0.

radius
Set distance in meters between loudspeakers and the listener with near-field HRTFs. Default is 1.

type
Set processing type. Can be time or freq. time is processing audio in time domain which is slow. freq is processing audio in frequency domain which is fast. Default is freq.

speakers
Set custom positions of virtual loudspeakers. Syntax for this option is: <CH> <AZIM> <ELEV>[|<CH> <AZIM> <ELEV>|...]. Each virtual loudspeaker is described with short channel name following with azimuth and elevation in degreees. Each virtual loudspeaker description is separated by ’|’. For example to override front left and front right channel positions use: ’speakers=FL 45 15|FR 345 15’. Descriptions with unrecognised channel names are ignored.
>>
>>58806429
That's just the ffmpeg docs, which barely say anything
For example, what's the spec for sofa files? iirc I read that you can find them in some slightly obscure AES papers, but where else?

I've always thought people shitting on onboard sound were just audiophile autists running 300$ headphones to spot that little difference.

Turns out that pic related for not even 50 europoor bucks absolutely BTFOs my (onboard) ALC 887 in terms of sound quality. It's not even funny. I'm only on Superlux headphones (662 and 681 Evo) and I've never thought they could sound this good.

Could anyone perhaps give some advice on amps/speakers here? I have some vintage Aiwa speakers that were a hand-me-down from my mum. They seem to sound really nice and I believe she spent a fair bit at the time of purchasing them - I say this as I don't think they're the shit that came out when Sony bought out the brand and were well before that.

Whilst the current amplifier works, the headphone jack is only 50/50 and it is pretty cumbersome in general... I'd like to get something smaller that functions solely as an amplifier but I'm not too sure where to start. I've seen a few Pioneer amps that look nice (Pioneer SA-5300) but I don't think they're suitable in the way of power requirements. The speakers are rated for 60w and 6ohm each. Any recommendations?

Image related is what I had my eyes on.

Akiba's Trip, Ep 03

>how much of a difference does that make?
A rather significant difference. SPL power requirements are rather exponential; to achieve an additional ~3 dB usually requires around twice as much power as the previous value. For example, if 80 mW were to produce 90 dB SPL, you'd need around 160 mW to achieve 93 dB SPL.

80 mW -> 620 mW will give you about 9 dB towards SPL/volume/headroom, which can mean the difference between 'quiet as fuck, with the volume knob set to max' and 'this sounds just right, with some more room on the volume knob to spare'
>>

That would probably be the Uber version. Fulla2 has more of those fancy connections anyway.
These values aren't on the spec. These are interpolated values estimated from the rounded off numbers that Schiit provides.

>SPL power requirements are rather exponential
The definition of decibel revolves around exponents and the inverse exponent, the logarithms.
>volume knob
That would have to be an exceptionally shitty pot made to have such a limited range.

Your own fault for not buying a good enough device to drive headphones better than that CMOY and(especially) the Audioquest garbage. Your coworkers must know better. I bet they also steer clear of V-Moda as they value fidelity.

It's kind of silly that Sennheiser didn't upgrade their HD600/650 line yet after many many years. HD700 feels like a test version for HD800, not an evolution from HD600. Buy a headphone amp/dac. Preferably one with rca out for your speaker amp. The reason for that is that most speaker amplifiers, especially vintage aren't very well suited for modern headphones. The headphone out on most of them is just an afterthought and not very high fidelity in general. Big problem in particular is extremely high output impedance.

Just interested in seeing how it performs before saying a thing. It looks ridiculous and I don't get why they just had to try and cram planar driver into "small" size to be used in IEMs. I guess people REALLY like to rave about the transducer technology, despite how unfitting or pointless it might be in some cases.

You can try out 7.1 with software on any pair of headphones

It just makes the soundstage really wide, but while doing so it makes the sound inaccurate so playing games or listening to music is impossible because of echo, you can't tell where any of the sound is actually coming from accurately and things bounce around and you'll hear sounds played on the left side coming through on the right and it's just really weird

I do not recommend it for anything really except maybe some tv/movie shows that don't include a lot of talking and such

I have a pair of Audiotechnica ATH-A900X but it's starting to get old and deteriorate after my second time refurbishing it, so I'm actually trying to find a newer one. I want one that can pick up bass well while also being decent at hearing music from pretty much any genre (like jazz, rock, metal, piano/ragtime, strong vocals, etc).

What are some headphones that are good at this, or at least better than the ATH-A900X? Also I'm guessing Amazon would be the best place for prices too.

flac is a meme, vinyl rips are good for getting a proper master from which you can downconvert to mp3
>>
>>58797493

Sennheiser HD598se, from Amazon.

Your motherboard (I'm also on xtal audio2) has a reasonable builtin AMP, although somewhat warm (the higher the freq the less the power), which should suffice for a start. A Schiit Fulla2 is however a very noticeable improvement on that, for later, once you can afford it and feel like improving the sound even further.

Note that once you're used to the headphones (give it a couple weeks), You'll notice mp3 sound like shit, and FLACs make a huge difference. You'll recognize bad recordings as such.

Schiit Magni 2 is the standard recommendation that will drive them really well, but theorically, a Schiit Fulla2 will suffice, and is a super nifty device to have.

If you care about comfort and you're ok with open, and at your budget, you should really go over ear.

My suggestion is HD598se or HD599, paired with Schiit Fulla2 amp.

Are the HD650 sibiliant in any way? I've listened to the 702s and the DT990s in the past and always regret the treble on those.
>>
>>58821192
I'm worried mostly aboutfrequencies between 10KHz and 15KHz. I know measurements usually don't get good readings after 10khz
>>
>>58821219
Your answer cant be found on a simple buy guide, so i doubt you'll get an answer here.
>>
>>58821186
I'm all for providing an answer but not if the person asks whether it's a "meme" or not.

>Please put some effort into your questions and requests

If that isn't clear enough, maybe we need examples of how not to form a question.
>>
>>58821192
No, the 650's have recessed treble if anything.
>>
>>58821310
I need to stop checking head-fi
>>
>>58821192
The headphone is free of larger spikes in the treble range and overall the response is more tilted towards warm response. It's unlikely that HD 650 will be sibilant but you can't really say how the response works on your ears and with your perception. Compared to the K702 and DT990 it's surely less sibilant/bright. Simple check on measurements would show this immediately.
>>
>>58821325
>Simple check on measurements would show this immediately.
Yea, yes. I know this and I did check multiple measurements but I've read multiple times that after 10khz every measurment stops being accurate. Hence my second post asking more specifically about 10KHz to 15KHz (or more)

Thanks for the help
>>
>>58821284
For the purpose of me judging you, what would be your answer then?
>>
>>58821314
Warm (boosted bass): X2, kinda 650 & 558/598
Neutral: HD600, HE400i, kinda 650 & 558/598
V Shaped (Boosted bass & treble): DT880, DT990 even more, hi2050 & clones, kinda K612/K7XX
Bright (Boosted treble): Entire AKG K line, SHP9500
>>
>>58821341
>but I've read multiple times that after 10khz every measurment stops being accurate
That is correct. You can't judge the 10 KHz range without sweep tones and testing the headphone on your ears. That range is usually not sibilant, just "airy" in musical terms. Bright headphones usually have peaks lower than 10 KHz(K702 and DT990 for example) which can make them fatiguing to listen to, depending on the frequency and magnitude of the peak of course.

>>58821422
The question needs to be defined better. There are plenty of things I could understand by the word "meme". FLAC is a lossless audio format which offers relatively wide support with good compression effiency and speed. It's also open source and it has support for music focused features like tagging, metadata, album art etc. But I doubt the original person asked us to repeat what is literally in the first paragraph on Wikipedia. It does what it's supposed to do and does it well.
>>
>>58821543
>The question needs to be defined better.
no it isn't, it's fairly obvious what he's asking

don't pretend like you didn't understand it.

it's a retarded question regardless of how it's worded though
>>
>>58821637
It's probably something like "is there a difference between flac and mp3" which isn't much better but it could be something else too as there are plenty of things to understand about codecs. It isn't a retarded question if you ask properly but to ask a sensible question you have to understand a little on the subject. And to clarify, I'm not bothered by ignorance, but by the total lack of effort at wanting to know.

>>
>>58812203
By source they mean where will you be listening to the music from (phone, computer, maybe a specific dac or amp)

Also we need to know what kind of sound you like. Warm is bassy, neutral has no particular emphasis on any frequency.

I could get the K240s for $95ish, the M40x for $135, the SHP9500s for $120 or the CB-1s for $90. Is _some_ clipping okay?
Foobar lowers the volume on most of my tracks by anywhere from 9db to 13db to avoid clipping, normalizing at 89-90db, but what this does is force me to crank up the volume on my Fiio so after applying EQ because my IEMs have nobass I end up listening at nearly max volume on low gain, which obviously hits the battery.
Should I increase the dbs to at least 100? seems to be what most tracks were downloaded at, and while most of them would still be marked as clipping it would help a ton with the volume issues.
