Conversations + OMEMO + ejabberd on CentOS is by far the best instant messaging platform.

people still use it with otr to discuss about cp and shit

About spam: xmpp seems to lack the support of blocking messages from all users not on your contact list. Or at least the libpurple/pidgin implementation.
Jabbim came up with some server-side antispam protection last recently though, so at least that looks solvable.
