Oh, and as far as I remember, the system is not that complex. They obviously did a full scrub for images through all personal vk profiles, even if one is private, it has a profile pic which can be real face, and there are photo tags on friends albums, the system is picking only pictures where face is recognizable and training the neural net to associate similar faces within one profile.
When you upload a photo of face to the app servers, their system finds certain facial pattern and compares it to the database, outputting the most similar profiles.

AFAIK there was an anon a couple of days ago, he did a face recognition site for pornstars database. You upload a photo and it looks for similar pornstars.
Anons from 2ch did the exact opposite thing when they were raiding facefind, they took russian pornstars faces from various videos and found their profiles on vk.

Someone can probably write the same app for facebook, the scale is not comparable, parsing 140 million vk profiles and 2 billion pajeets on fb is not the same easy thing for a computer.
