Kaby Lake has been released! Skylake is depreciated if corresponding chips are similarly priced (e.g., i5 7600K vs i5 6600K)!
>Some motherboards will have a one-click, 5GHz on air OC button that works for 80% of i5 7600Ks
>100 series chipsets (Z170, B150, ect) don't work out of the box with Kaby Lake
>Z series chipsets have an "Enhanced Turbo", which allows all cores to run at the highest single core boost clockspeed (works for Skylake CPUs as well)
>Pentiums now have hyperthreading, and are thus the new default budget / entry level gaming CPUs
>Pentium G4560 is the best price / perf four thread CPU on a modern platform
>All Kaby Lake CPUs work natively with 2400MHz DDR4 memory
>Do not underestimate the impact of fast (>2400, e.g, 3000MHz) RAM in conjunction with a Z series chipset, which often provides as much of a performance boost as a CPU overclock
>>
>Get some aftermarket fans with some self-tapping screws
>Didn't fit the screws in outside of the case first
>Really sloppy threads, looks kind of like your girl's asshole when I was done with it
Lesson learned.
>>
So I currently have 3x 23" 1080p 60hz monitors and would like to upgrade to a higher resolution monitor for my main display and then have 2x portrait displays for the sides as I currently need more desk space. Would it be worth getting a 1440p 120+ hz monitor if the other two are still 60hz? Also I don't play games so would the extra hz even matter?

I don't see why you wouldn't get semi-fanless, it's not like its heating up a shit load by supplying 20% max load or less

Hi /g/
I got a new condo and I've given my old PC to my family. I'm using a meme acer laptop which is by far the worst investment in my life (i7 6700hq, gtx960m, 16gb ddr4, 120gb ssd, 1tb hdd, overheats like a bitch even with chrome).

My old PC had i5-2500k, amd 6970 and 8 gigs of ram. I'm looking into buying something that would fit into smallest case possible, something like Mac Mini (which is looking good imo).
Not a gaymer, I'd still want to run some new titles just to check em out. My old PC struggled with The Witcher 3, I need a PC that would run TW3 in 1080p at max details with 50+ fps (not falling for 60fps meme).

I was considering i5-7500 and RX 460. Maybe i5-7500 is overkill? I'm looking for the cheapest build possible ofc, only intel cpus

Build my first pc here for casual gaming, every is already working, the thing is, i was thinking of getting a RX 460 but it turns out i can actually get an RX 480, the problem being that, according to PCpartPicker the whole consumption will be around 419W and my current EVGA is 430W, so my question is, is the consuption presented by PCpartPicker enough to fuck thing up or will the EVGA endure untill i can get something around 600W?
>>
So how much longer do I have to wait for Another Massive Dissapointment?
>>
>>58790985

Kabylake has already been released anon.
>>
>>58790978
It will do. But it is working hard and could have early death, thus sending errant voltage and causing more damage.
>>
>>58790515

what's with all the monitors

I'd just get 3x 1080
>>
>>58791008

Quality psu's will run at full load (as long as they are kept within optimum temperature range) basically forever.
>>
>>58791002
Kaby lake is fine if you are upgrading 4th gen cpu or older. Not worth it if you have a skylake obviously.
>>
>>58791011

My table is too small for 3 monitors. I'm be using the 1080 with on in portrait. Getting the bigger one to try out 1400p when I'm over 1080 I guess.
>>
>>58791008
anything i can do to minimize the consuption (like turning of one fan or two) would help?

AyyyMD current cpus are total shit either wait for Ryzen or if you're impatient go Intel
my Intel Suggestions are:

Budget Pentium G4560 shit is so cache

Mid i5-7500 or the i5-6500 can be overclocked but needs a Z170

high i5-6600k/7600k or i7-6700k/7700k
>>
The cheapest Intel Processor I can get in my country is Pentium G4400.

Is this good enough? I'm not a gaymer, I just play league of legends every now and then
>>
>>58791885
Yes but G4560 is much better. The only reason to get the G4400 would be BCLK OC.
>>
>>58791885

If you aren't pairing it with dgpu I really wouldn't want to get a pentium of any flavour even for LoL - AMD's apus are much, much better for the job.
>>
>>58791915
>G4560

I can't find this anywhere. I think it's not available here yet
>>
>>58792144
Lol wat, where do you live? Anyways, then get the G4400 and a 1050Ti or RX470.
>>
>>58791885
>>58792087
This. I used a a10 6700 for two years, it played everything I wanted at medium 1080p, 30-40 fps. It'll handle lol and similar perfectly fine.
>>
>>58790198

That looks pretty cool
>>
>>58791304
That depends on what you want. I've been using a 980 with an a10 for a while, it works fine. But it bottlenecks hard. If you don't care about a solid 60 fps in current gen games, it can be a good idea to get the card and save for a full upgrade.
>>
>>58792218

EKWB are getting in on that and their AIO (the predator) is basically a pre-filled custom loop.

>>
>>58790721
>I was considering i5-7500 and RX 460
Don't. The RX460 will bottleneck you hard. Even if you're not a gamer, get at least a RX470 4G.
>I'm looking for the cheapest build possible ofc
Cheapest build would be something like a 6500 + H110 + RX4704G.
>only intel cpus
Why not wait for Zen? It's almost here and if AMD drops the ball with this you can always get an i5.

>>58790978
>consumption will be around 419W and my current EVGA is 430W
It will endure it but you're already in the danger zone with such a load on that PSU. Upgrade it as soon as you can.

if you go to pcpartpicker, look through the completed builds. you can see what sort of GPU clearances you'll have or what sort of air flow will be required.

>>

A as in Amp - most motherboard fan headers are only good for 1A (and to be fair 99% of fans you are likely to use will be below that) but some of the more industrial fans (like most of the infamous Delta lineup) will be above that.

Its an often overlooked issue when people rip delta and other such company's fans out of old office pc's (typically dell ones) and bolt them to their elite gaymen motherboard.

is "an i5 is all you need for gaming" meme finally dead?

in all the recent Digital Foundry vids (hell even other YTers), the i7 consistently scores anywhere from 20% to 50% higher. even older i7s seem to be a better buy than new i5s, even at the same price. in Canada, I can grab a 2600k for a bit over $100, but a 7600k is $330. even a 4790k+mobo can probably be had for $350 if you find a good deal
>>
>>58796545
I'm assuming you're asking if a i5 2400 will bottleneck the rx470 (since the other way around doesn't make sense). I'd say yes, probably. a stock 2500k will bottleneck a r9 290, but again, it depends on the game. GTA5, Witcher, maybe Battlefield, yeah your cpu will bottleneck

Waste of time on the upgrade route in my opinion - if you want to upgrade such a build you'd realistically be going all out rendering most of what you have completely useless. Realistically any cpu upgrade would require new ram unless you specifically hunt down a DDR3 supporting chip and (again) new cpu realistically means new mobo.

Plus Intel's igpu is shockingly bad outside of iris pro (which doesn't come cheap). In short, that build isn't good for too much despite its low cost and upgrading it is a waste of time. Honestly at this sort of performance tier i'd look towards AMD - their APUs will massacre the pentium for igpu performance and you really aren't going to be needing enormous cpu horsepower anyway.

Pic semi-related - its a bit old but it hightlights the difference nicely.

Build a PC with the cheapest component, either use pcpartpicker or the website of your choice to find them (ex; newegg.com, amazon, etc). pcpartpicker will help you with the compatibility of your parts, but don't rely on it.

A majority of CPU come with integrated graphics, meaning you don't need a graphics card, especially if you're only going on the internet. So choose one that has integrated graphics.

For a basic pc you'll need a case, motherboard, ram, cpu, power supply and storage. I'd recommend AMD cpus if you're going for a budget build.

Yo dudes, i've got a build with a GigaByte 1070 and a i5-7600k that i plan to be buying towards the end of the month, originally, i planned to buy a Asus PG279Q ROG Swift to go with it, under the assumption its basically gonna last until it breaks or 4k becomes the new norm. some stuffs come up that forces me to spend a good amount of money elsewhere, so my budgets has been cut down a decent bit.

To the actual point:
is 1440p really that amazing? im thinking about keeping the gtx1070 + the 7600, and getting a "temporary" 1080p main screen for gaming, that i can then eventually use as a third screen when i have enough money to fully step up to 1440p

my thoughts behind 1080p, is that it wont hurt as much, using it for a bonus monitor, and 1080 gaming takes a significantly less power, right?

no kidding dude, im hearing amazing things, but it just seems like going 1440p/144hz+/IPS forces you to fork over at least 400 dollars (BenQ GW2765HT), but it seems like if you're put out that money, you sorta HAVE to pick up freesync or G-sync, making it 700-800 dollars in my case (g-sync)...

>>
>>58801356
You don't have to pick out gsync if you don't need it
The problem is, there is no GPU on the market that will reach 1440p 144fps 100% of the time. There is no GPU you could buy right now that would make gsync worthless at 1440p and 144hz
>>
>>58801371
They're slower hotter and less reliable
>>
>>58801356

Well you can get a 1440p/144hz/G-Sync monitor for as low as $420 if IPS isn't a deal breaker.
>>
XFX PSUs are good?
>>
>>58801371
>It has any drawnbacks when comparated with 3,5" ones?
Yes, plenty
>125MB/s peak read/write speeds compared to 190+MB/s for decent 3.5" models
>runs about 10 degrees hotter when written to constantly
>slow as balls to access data
On the plus side, they use about 75% of the power of a comparable 1TB 3.5" drive.
>>
>>58801386
yeah, thats the main issue, g-sync seems like too much value, which is weird, because its reported to be worth around 200$, yet all these full package monitors cost 700-800, instead of 550-600...

>>58801406
i spent a good while looking up differences between IPS and TN on high end monitors, and i respect the fact, that TN picture is perfectly fine, from right angle, and has a slightly higher responsetime, but you just cant deny the picture quality of IPS, and you're already making a bigass investment in my eyes. here, the PG278Q is merely 130$ cheaper, too, unless you had the "old" acer HUA in mind?
>>
>>58801502
Well if you got a 1080p 144hz monitor, you definitely wouldn't need gsync running a 1070
>>
>>58801502
>you can't deny the picture quality of IPS
Can you support the picture quality of IPS?
You have a good point about TN being fine from the right angle and not from the wrong angle, why can't you find a legitimate support for this claim?
Or are you just thinking "IPS is better because /g/ told me, TN is like level 1 and IPS is like level 3 it's so much better!"
>>

>>58801548
of course theres both good and worse TN/IPS monitors, but at the high end, a fair comparison could be the 278Q to the 289Q.

in this case, the picture of the 278Q just looks a bit weird to me, because of the contrast ratio, otherwise it seems pretty close.

here's what i'd call a good video for comparrison
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=79r5rxS276Y

its not a case of "IPS is ALWAYS BETTER" but i'd say most TN monitors arent as good as that one, no?

keep in mind, that im not only gonna be playing games on it, ill be doing coding, browsing and movies, too.

The contrast ratio on the IPS screen you're probably using is much worse than what is being displayed on the video, you aren't even seeing it
You're seeing the camera angles and lighting recorded and compressed, recompressed by YouTube, re-encoded as a 720p 30fps video and shown to you
I doubt YouTube videos of the monitors are a good comparison to judge a monitors image quality on

>>
>>58801768
This exact video says they're both extremely good quality panels, and that the TN is surprisingly just as good as the IPS in color. This actual video is saying there's no difference other than the viewing angles.
I remember this video, it's what convinced me to buy the PG278Q because I was worried about color and this guy assured me the color between the 278q and 279q was essentially the same
>>
>>58801768

yes, he does say that the color accuracy of the 2 monitors is the same, its the contrast ratio that is lower than promised on the TN monitor, meaning in a difference between the darkest and lightest colors, that results in some plain colors on the TN having a pinkish shade. im sure you get used to that pretty quickly, if you arent doing design and stuff, but he also makes a point out of explaining, that this TN panel is of exceptionally high quality.

and again, im building my points on how the screens look like in the youtube video, im going by the actual numbers and statements the gentleman in the video is providing.

Both, the shit list suggested by OP and http://www.logicalincrements.com/ need to be reworked in time. Guess April after the Ryzen release would be the best time to do so and Coffe/Cannon Lake won't come until Q4 2017 / Q1 2018.
>>
>>58801997
I also have a 3200x1800 IPS screen and it's great and all but other than the vibrancy there's nothing better about it (which could be written off as a brightness lottery)
I'm not biased against the 279Q, I just think there's literally nothing to be paying the extra $200 for
Looking at a different site for each figure, I'm seeing normally 880-920:1 for the 278Q, while the IPS is better at 940-1000:1 (yet being worse when factoring in ANSI uniformity to the figure, making it 760:1 on the IPS vs 915:1 on the TN)
These figures aren't something impressive or consistent enough to pay $200 extra for

The difference in color accuracy is very big between TN and IPS, you shouldn't even think about TN for solely just movies or photo work; those two monitors are just using 10-bit instead of 8-bit colors, so they both have a great color range
>>
>>58802118
im getting my data from the review linked previously, since i know Tom has put a significant amount of time into researching and testing the 2 monitors himself, i dont know where you pulled that tom'sHardware chart from, but to be fair, i think im gonna stick with him on this one.

regardless, both of these monitors will probably last until they break, or its time to go 4k, so why cheap out and save 150$(difference here) on an already incredibly expensive monitor, that s gonna last years?

whoa, easy there, all i said is that we are citing 2 different sources, and i prefer a full, in-dept review/comparrison to a chart from TomsHardware.

i'm honestly suprised you are defending the picture quality of the TN varriant so avidly, you are the first person i have met, claiming the 278Q has better picture or equal picture quality to the 279Q, that is both newer, and focused on improving picture quality, and dont put words in my mouth by claiming my reasoning is "Bigger Price-tag, Better in every way", i dismissed that in my first message, brother.

Also, what do you mean i havent specified my needs for my 1080p monitor? >>58802192
look no further than there.

i'm looking for probably either a 144hz TN, or a 60hz IPS, was hoping someone had a/some recomendation(s) based on those needs, since theres a lot more choices that match those needs. for size, no smaller than 24" really.
