Who here uses a radio controlled watch and what do you think of it? Post pics if you've got them.

I contacted casio to ask if the radio would be able to reach me in Southern Ontario (Canada) but the answer I got back was "Yes, but other factors may make it difficult". This seems a bit cryptic to me, does this mean it will work but take an hour to update or some days it will work and others it wont?

Pic related was attached in the email.
>>
>>58792215
I though from the thumbnail you bought a Seiko 5. Maybe you should look up its S5 equivalent on the Seiko 5 Finder and get that one too.

>>58792911

I live in DC and my GShock has trouble getting a signal from the Colorado station, while indoors
>>
>>58792951
So it is just a regular watch which gets reset when you are outside or does it not work at all?
>>
>>58792911
>This seems a bit cryptic to me
it means "you can't blame us if it doesn't," and "you're always going to be a number of milliseconds off due to the distance anyway."

Also, watches that sync with a radio signal don't really function any differently than a regular watch for most people. I'd sooner just stick with a non-radio watch or go GPS.
>>
>>58792975

I get a better signal outside, but it's just inconsistent. Which is annoying.

Protipp: Indoors kills the radio watch.

I have a radio sync desk clock in the mall I work in and the structure blocks DCF77 completely. According to this map I'm less than 800km from it and it just doesn't work.

The clock is already -6s from atomic time, so I should take it for a walk or something.
>>
>>58793039
>>58792951
>>58793080
doesn't it only need to receive a signal once a day? what's the problem?
>>
>>58793097
It doesn't need to receive a signal ever. It just wont sync to a signal if there's no signal.

>I'm really not a fan of those silver sunburst dials.
Silver dials, hands and indices are a bag combination in my experience; it's impossible to see the time with the sun reflecting off all that shit on your dial.

Needs more contrast.
In this case, go the frake. The other variants of that model, the costlier gold ones, look nicer I think.
>>
>>58792138
>>58791818
Dimensions are one thing, but it looks bigger than the specs would have you think due to the way the case is shaped.

Really have to try it on to gauge properly whether or not it looks too bulky on you.

/wt/'s opinion on doxa dive watches?
>>
>>58793754
>doxa
I would suggest doing some research into this mess of a company before even considering one of its products.

Short gist:
>Swiss name that's been ressurrected by fuckers
> Shilled and made famous again by a hack american fiction writer and those that wish to LARP as his main character
>Made in china, not really swiss, but the prices would fool you
>Swiss "office" is literally just a post box
>other fuckery involved in general customer service that' too much to get into here

If you're talking genuine vintage doxa, that's another story. Modern "doxa" is for the discerning and easily fooled.

If none of that bothers you, I think the designs are nice. But there are too many reasons as to why I wouldn't buy one, and the designs aren't enough to outweigh this.
>>
>>58793754

The problem is Casio's quartz accuracy is bargain-basement quality. Without a sync every Casio I have drifts badly.

So far my most accurate standalone watch is a $100 Seiko mecaquartz.

For the record, my Casios sync just fine here in Asheville, NC, and used to sync poorly in Osaka.

Them being 39mm diameter is nice too. However for the price of the gold frake I'd rather just get a chronometre bleu. SBGA129 doesn't have the nice 5 link bracelet, and the SBGA139 is unobtanium. The blue accents match the snowflake dial better I think, anyway.

fossil case backs are a bitch to get back on. not only do you need a blade to open it (make sure it isnt sharp like the fuckwit who sliced his finger open a few weeks ago on this thread) they arent easy to snap back on.

the batteries are like 50 cents a pop. that isnt a big deal. dunno what movement it has.

I would get the SARB. It's sporty enough to wear with casual clothes but dressy enough to wear with smarter stuff, especially if the bracelet is swapped for a leather strap.

>>
>>58804519
The SARB is 350 USD, but you kind of need a aftermarket bracelet for both the ray and the SKX. so they also end up at just about 250 USD.

I just don't see what people here like about the Ray, it's a fairly underwhelming design with a mineral crystal and a cheap bracelet.

The SARB is what I'd go for myself, but if you want a more rugged piece the SKX is the way to go.
>>

I'm buying used/mint and they hover around $250 in the after market.

It's on a bracelet and the dial is quite overdesigned for a traditional dress watch (lum, secounds track, text).

It's sporty for a dress watch though, not a sports watch.
>>
>>58805960
not him but to purists its not a dress watch categorically

the hands are lumed for one thing. strap is not leather either
>>
>>58805960
A sports watch is probably going to be first defined by the case. I know on /wt/ some people can't see a watch as anything as other than a dial and movement, but an angular, sharp edged, and alternating finish sport case does not make a dress watch. It makes a sports watch.

Also, yeah, the dial. Black is one of the go to sports watch colors.

Lume is sporty.

The chapter ring is sporty

The bracelet is sporty.

It's a sports watch.

It really depends on the location. I live in eastern Quebec with lots of mountains and valleys. Precious metal rather than steel: check
generally more delicate and simple crown and case design: check
subsidiary seconds or two-hander with no seconds: check
white or cream dial: check
Leather strap: check
No additional complications: check

Could be slightly more dressy by reducing the number indices in the subdial. But is overall well within the dress watch category.

So something like a Vacheron 33093/3 would be about as dressy as you can get, more or less.

The LM stands for Lord Matic. There were two LM lines produced by the two competing Seiko factories in the 1970s. The regular LM models were produced by Suwa Seikosha and used 56xx movements adjusted to a fairly loose factory accuracy regulation.

The LM Special line was instead produced by Daini Seikosha and used the superior 52xx movement adjusted to a much tighter factory regulation.

The 56xx movement was a technically inferior design that uses a plastic gear in the day/date quickset mechanism that is prone to shrinking and cracking due to age. This means that any 56xx movement with a date or day/date features is a ticking time bomb that will eventually have the quickset fail. Also, the 56xx is generally regarded as having inferior inherent accuracy to the 52xx.

The 52xx was such an excellent technical design that Seiko resurrected it essentially unchanged in the 1990s as the now highly sought after 4s15 movement, now used only in Credor models.

Watch Band Center has the best selection of non-Chinkshit Milanese mesh bands at all pricepoints.

Just make sure you pay careful attention to brushed vs. polished, loop size, and thickness when choosing one. For a diver I would recommend a brushed finish, bigger loops and a thicker mesh.

Another option is Strapcode which does reasonably well priced Ploproff style shark mesh bands.

Pretty badly. Co-Axial movements are delicate and can only be serviced by Omega themselves at exorbitant prices, while the manufacturing quality and workmanship on the case, dial and bracelet are literally going to be inferior to a $600 Seiko Brightz.

A good looking bracelet style, made of titanium.
https://www.google.com/patents/US6418706

What I am missing there, what's the catch, what's the difference it makes you rate it low vs a seiko?

>Because its looks way better than the plain plastic or steel you guys post here.

>It looks better
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA
The plastis Casios also look like shit, but if you try to compare a shit Fossil with something likie a Seiko, Omega or Rolex you're simply delusional.

It does not take more than a few minutes to not that an Aqua Terra only has three alternating layers of polished/brushed/polished finishing on the case, that the hands are totally flat, the applied indices look cheap I'm person, and the bracelet is a light feeling chintzy joke with rounded corners and simple brushed/polished/brushed finishing appropriate on a Tissot.

On the other hand a Seiko Bright has a much more complex case shape with five layers of alternating finishes, a much more substantial bracelet with five piece articulating links with alternating shapes and finishes that integrate much better with the lugs, a more complex to make guilloche dial, three dimensional hands with alternating finishes, and applied indices with alternating finishes.

Man Im really having a hard time to understand your view, but just can't. It is like those jordans and velcros rating? Like you judge for its re-sell price or something?

I have a gold bracelet and chain, but wearing a rolex its cringe. Expensive but Ti looks way better than Au. And the size most rolex have it makes them a bling bling rather than a watch.
>>
>>58813126

The Speedmaster is quite distinct from most of the rest of the Omega range, and in any case Lawyeranon is wealthy to the point of not caring at all about value for money.

I also happen to think he is general far too kind to Omega.

>>58813061

If you would like to make a detailed point by point argument as to how the case, dial and bracelet finishing on that Omega model are superior to the flaws in the AT noted here >>58813207 please feel free.

I'm not that interested in visiting an Omega dealer to see for myself, frankly. Just from the pictures it does appear that the bracelet is similar in it's extremely poor integration with the lugs and looks like the same type of cheapo bracelet used on the AT.

I judge a watch by its ability to not fall apart after a few months / years.

Read reviews about Fossil watches.

There are people ITT who own 30-40 year old watches which still function at factory specs.

That is one way to define quality. That it works over time.

The hands are undersized for the watch. In this case they're plenty thick, but the minute and second hands don't actually extent to the minute and second track.

This is generally from using underpowered, smaller, cheaper movements, even if it hurts the overall design of the watch. Seiko wouldn't do that.

The lume is going to be lower quality than a seiko by far.

The quality of finishing is very poor. You even mentioned that bracelet specifically, but lets take a look at it compared to a GS bracelet for a really exaggerated example. There's a much more clear distinction between finishes on GS bracelet. The fossil, by comparison really looks weak. Why bother create multiple surfaces for multiple finishes if you can't make them look half decent? The reasonable thing to do would be do 1 uniform finishing better than multiple finishings poorly.

And again when it comes to the bracelet, they're using a sort of oyster-style bracelet, but the end links don't actually even fit flush to the case. I understand what they're doing here, it's a cost saving measure that will allow them to use the same bracelet on multiple watches without redesigning end-links. That being said it's not appealing, doesn't show attention to detail or good design. It's just cost-cuting.

Also, this watch is probably not great beach/pool. Here's fossil's guide on water resist
https://www.fossil.com/content/dam/fossil/PDF/warranty/Water_Resistance.pdf

And you should always be warry about chronographs around water, due to the nature of how water resistance is designed in their pushers. It's good practice not to use the chrono pushers when the watch is wet.

On eBay, yes. I got mine off Yahoo! Japan Auction through a proxy bidding service for $140 USD plus shipping. Had it serviced and had a sapphire crystal put on it and it was good to go.

What is the /wt/ opinion on these?
Would you rather get a PADI turtle or the blue lagoon one?
Personally I'd have to get the PADI one, because my diving qualification is with PADI.
I wouldn't actually wear a mechanical piece for diving. During training we were told that if we wore actual watches when diving we have to let them soak in tap-water afterwards to make sure all the shit doesn't stick to the watch, especially after sea diving to stop the salt damaging the gaskets.

Just because you are such an horological pleb that you have no idea of the utterly massive range of movements produced by Seiko under Seiko, Grand Seiko and Credor branding doesn't mean the rest of us are.

I don't like Rolex, personally, but their manufacturing quality is on another planet from Swatch group 50.01% Swiss Made pleb-catchers.

BTW Rolex owners laugh at Omega owners (MOTFM excepted). Deservedly.

I don't understand why /wt/ would be against this. Mechanical watches are Veblen goods anyway so surely the expensive Apple watch should be be better then many other choices?

pop off the back, stick it on the timegrapher, move the regulator knob on the balance cock until the rate is where you want it. To be honest it's pretty easy.

The hard part is adjusting the watch to keep the same time in all positions, which is a function of lubrication, balance spring shape, etc.
>>
>>58818511
>>58818558
Some watches have a fine adjuster, which is more precise than just pushing the knob around - you turn a very small screw.

finally, some watches, instead of having an adjustable regulator, have screws or other adjustable weights in the balance wheel itself that you adjust to increase or decrease the inertia of the balance wheel, which speeds it up or slows it down. These are comparably more difficult to regulate.

Where can you buy Mako USA for cheaper than the official site? It seems like the only place to buy it and I'm not paying $375 for an Orient. Wasn't this supposed to be a cheap watch?
>>
>>58819330
No, the USA is a special model made for orientwatchusa (which isn't Orient, but a reseller, i'm pretty sure). So you won't find it anywhere else.
That's why it's not actually a good deal, you can get the regular Ray and Mako much cheaper from other places.
