It's all a meme. The two GPU makers are almost identical technologically and they both need others to make their chips for them. The main difference is that NVIDIA just orders bigger dies and becomes more expensive that way. To understand how it works, GPUs are extremely parallelized machines, they are not like CPUs that if you add 2 more cores most people will notice 0 difference. If you double the cores of a GPU the difference will be direct on all platforms and all software (give or take minor exceptions).

As a result NVIDIA and AMD are almost identical companies to the consumer. NVIDIA will make the bigger dies with the more transistors, be slightly faster but also more shill you for more money. AMD will make slightly small dies, but still quite fast, and cheaper.

The reality about it is exposed further with Intel on CPUs. AMD (and NVIDIA) don't have their own Foundries. Intel does and destroys them at CPU making. It's extremely hard to shrink the transistor nowadays and whoever has Foundries wins because they cost billions each. Or, make bigger GPU dies because your IP still holds a bit.

It pisses me off that people took the bait that supposedly NVIDIA and AMD are in competition. They fucking love the status quo. They have no competitor other than themselves, they've hoarded the Patents to themselves so not even Intel can easily get to them and now they pretend it's a competition. They are a fucking Cartel, not even a Oligopoly.

I would normally not care if they had their out foundries but they don't so we see them charging for $600 for hardware that others could make for $400 or less. Give the IP they have to intel and you'd see faster GPUs than any of them in no time. Samsung can't enter either.

They do nothing secret if you know where to look. NVIDIA releases almost identical technology with bigger chips at bigger prices. AMD comes over with slightly smaller chips and slightly lower prizes and the shills of both pretend they won. It's a vicious cycle of the cartel.

Considering the amount of work AMD has put into firmware in the last year and the fact that in terms of raw power AMD hardware always beats Nvidia hardware I'd be surprised if RX 490 didn't destroy the 1080. Add in 8GB of HBM2 and at 4k I don't think Nvidia has a card that can keep up.

Exactly. They have hoarded most of the status quo patents and Intel can't get into it full speed. I guarantee you, if Intel was the manufacturer of designs of NVIDIA or AMD, the prizes would drop by about 40% to 50% for the same performance.

People find it hard to understand the scale of the magnitute of difficulty to have your own Foundries. They cost billons upon billions to upgrade per year alone. AMD and NVIDIA pay huge premiums to have others do it for them. Intel does not.

Intel is a company that has the capacity to do things only 1 or 2 other players can do, internationally.
