I double the cables over until they get to a length where I can comfortably tie an overhand knot into the cable without putting any unnecessary strain near the connectors.

It all depends on how often you plan to use them.

For longer term storage, you could do like the other posters say and use bags or different knots. I recently went through a box of cables and tied them either in a circular loop or a back-and-forth pattern using twist-ties.

If you have cables that you use on a regular basis and want to keep them close by then you could get something like a necktie rack or just put a row of nails into wood and hang the cables from there. Or just mount a coathanger somewhere and hang the cables off that.

I hope you meant Velcro strips

Carefully put them into storage containers, then they tend to unwind easily

Flat coil for most wires, pinched coil for thicker ones. Cord-lox for long ass and good quality wires, poorfag twist ties for everything else.

get a whole roll of these and coil your cables into circles

I don't, I have two milk crates labeled "POWER" and "DATA"

Power has:
110V standard cables
power bricks
spare PSU or two
internal DC connectors (think PSU extensions etc)

DATA is
ethernet cables
USB cables
audio cables
component cables

et cetera

works fine for me.
