Figure out what socket the processor uses (remove the heatsink and the socket type will usually be molded into the plastic).
Then go on eBay and find the fastest CPU that uses that socket. Make sure that particular computer is compatible with that CPU by checking google to see what the fastest factory model of that computer was. Manufacturers usually have old spec sheets hiding on their websites, though I don't know about a machine that old.

If you're gonna run Win98 you can't run more than 256mb of RAM without some config editing, make sure you do that before installing memory and if you have more than that take out modules before installing the OS. It probably takes DDR1 which should be easy to find.

Boot DOS. I'm not referring to running COMMAND.COM within Windows, I mean actual DOS. Learn C programming, do some neat low level VGA graphics stuff. DOS IDEs like Boreland are actually far more pleasant to use than modern bloated pieces of shit. Reverse engineer an old game's file formats. Learn serial comms and talk to some obscure piece of hardware. Understand the machine and enjoy.

If that doesn't interest you then I guess install win98se and play quake 3 as it was intended.

They use SDRAM and those sticks maxed out at 512 MB. IIRC. For example my Soyo/VIA motherboard had 4 slots and you could install 2x512 + 2x256 MB for 1,5 GB in total. Most motherboards only had 3 slots then, though.
