It's okay if you're running new hardware that can't into Windows 7. You don't have to worry about drivers and sheei, only issue is using the new start menu, but desu once you get used to it it's kinda comfier than the old one. The start menu rightclick is the real start menu
>>
>>58748738
Seriously can't believe there are ads. Can't believe I spent $100 on this when it had ads. Usually when I pay $2 to disable ads, why am I getting ads shoved down my throat after spending $100+? I didn't even keep it as my daily driver, I moved back to Linux. Can't bring myself to wipe it off my PC though.

You know what is really ironic? That W10, without having to joke or exaggerate, actually meets the criteria of malware now

>Malware, short for malicious software, is any software used to disrupt computer or mobile operations, gather sensitive information, gain access to private computer systems, or display unwanted advertising
>>
How any one of you can continue to use windows is beyond me.
Excellent alternatives are out there, yet you choose to ignore them.
Lets finally decide to start considering our other options.
Put aside your irrational aversions to different operating systems for once.

Much of this bullshit that is happening on windows is avoidable.
Exactly what is forcing you to continue using it?

I just don't understand.

How many times are we going to have these posts here?
Aren't we going to move on at some point?
Very many of you deliberately choose to be ignorant.
Enigma surrounds the underlying code of W10, why would you trust it?

Well, I've had enough of this.

Many companies, windows included, have said this in the past about many things.
But will it forever be stable and adaptable in it's current form with the needs of the next generations?
I doubt win 10 will be the last, it may have a longer life than other OS, or it may continue to be named 10, but the changes to the kernel and OS environment will probably change a lot beyond what 10 is right now.
That it will be an improvement or not is to be seen.
But right now, I say fuck win and adobe with their new subscription models and fuck apple current hardware path.

There is one main reason Windows 10 sucks worse than any other operating system. The OS-tan is from the future. She has chrome hair. She has evil blue eyes. I am sorry, but she looks horrible and wants me to join the fight against the meatspace.

I always believe we should base our OS choice on the hotness of the OS-tan. It is the only reasonable way to definitively, once and for all, find out what the best operating system is.

Consumers and enterprises are firmly stuck with Microsoft Windows. Everything they use on a daily basis is either software made by Microsoft or software that ONLY works on Windows. Microsoft can literally fuck them however they want to because they know consumers and enterprises are completely trapped in the Windows ecosystem. It's like the bullshit Apple is pulling with no headphone jacks and forcing USB-C only ports on everyone despite the market lacking USB-C peripherals. They KNOW people are heavily invested in the Apple ecosystem and switching would be much more painful than adapting to whatever hardware choices Apple makes.

This double standard that windows users push baffles me. They claim to not want to use Linux because some things require extra setup and they might have to run something under wine (god forbid) but when they have to spend extra time to stop windows from acting like malware every update that's perfectly acceptable. Then there are the people who use windows 7 still or use a server or enterprise version and say well I don't have this problem while ignoring the fact that for versions like 7 they had to configure it to not install the forced update and for special versions they had to pirate them then configured them for home use.
Overall Linux ia actually easier to use and a better experience with modern computers but people are just stuck in their ways and decide the obvious solution is to make 80000 threads a day calling Linux users names to try and justify their bullshit.

>>
>>58755445
I don't care about the amount of work I have to put into my computer to get it working. I am fine as long as in the end I am able to do everything without compromises. That is the problem with Linux for software, for some people it just isn't an option because the compromises would be too hard to make.

I ask for very little in this life. In fact, all I really want is for Thief: The Dark Project, the original unmodified 1.14 to work on my computer. It can use wrappers or third party loaders, but I don't want the game itself modded. My taste in one game means that I am stuck on Windows, even if I feel like I would enjoy Linux as an OS in every other way.

I love to tinker, to customize, to get things working exactly the way I want. But there are two flaws. One, I would lose one of my primary sources of enjoyment, I honestly could care less how well other games work, I want my particular title to work. Secondly, I am used to Windows and can stop tinkering to relax if I wish. I would gladly use Linux, but I would be entirely reliant on guides, for I know /g/ would just bash me for my choice in distro and tease me for being a Linux noob. I would be trying to do more obscure things and be unsure how to do them, something that I have a basis at least in Windows.

I have tried setting up a Fedora server. I crashed and burned miserably after trying to edit some system files in VIM to set up a DNS. Since I failed, everyone here would say I am not good enough to use it so go back to Windows. Thus why I am stuck. I would gladly love to learn, especially if I can run Thief with no instabilities since there is motivation, but nobody appreciates a noob asking questions and after spending a week on Fedora just trying to get this internet connection functional without success (even when I got it working, it would disconnect before I could ever get Apache fully downloaded), I think I am stuck between not knowing how to do things on my own and lacking aid.
>>
>>58756423
Looks like Thief: The Dark Project works fine under wine. https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=442
Also for your dns problem on fedora server, fedora uses network manager so the easiest way to edit your dns from command line is to use nmtui which provides a nice text ui to edit connections.
>>
>>58755256
well technically windows is still running the games so why even bother with linux at that point?
>>
>>58756581
Because that way you only use windows for games, and unlike dual-booting you don't have to reboot.
>>
>>58756545
Thanks for the reply, it gives me confidence to try Linux again and see where I can get. I was about to reply that they are most likely using modern mods and not the vanilla game, but apparently there is a gold rating for the demo by a Gentoo user.

Network manager, I recognize that. I think one of the first things I found online told me to DISABLE that and use the legacy based network stuff. Even when I enabled it again, I don't recall being able to access a UI, not sure if I ever stumbled on that command. As far as I remember, the most visual thing I saw was VIM. Being used to just typing in Windows, I think the first time I installed Fedora I managed to corrupt my entire OS. Honestly I believe a lot of my problems might have been that I was trying to operate the server through a VM and trying to passthrough my IP from my main computer to the VM. If I had eliminated some factors, maybe I would have found the problem not to even be Fedora.
>>
>>58756789
Don't listen to people telling you to disable network manager (or other new stuff in fedora like firewalld). They just don't know how to use it so they disable it and use the old complicated tools. You might have to install the package NetworkManager-tui to get the text ui for network manager, it looks like pic related.
For VM's you can use network manager to create bridges which allows the VM to have it's own ip on your main network.

Your post is clearly biased in favor on linux users:
>make 80000 threads a day calling Linux users names to try and justify their bullshit.
This is the biggest irony here. It seems to me that the Linux users are always first with the spouting "LOL PAJEET XD" at every post and making the "current state of windows" threads and constantly forcing their freedom ideology down everyone's throats and memeing with ">Windows" every time someone asks a question while happening to use Windows and the list goes on.

Double standards that Linux users push:
They claim to not want to use Windows because it's a botnet and doesn't respect your freedoms, yet they're completely fine with advocating for the use of Windows in a VM or the use of software like wine for enabling use of non free proprietary malware.
Something doesn't work on Linux whatever reason = your fault/works for me :) stop using shit software/hardware/distros. Hardware poorly supported = your fault. Software lacking features = your fault, just add those features in. But, use Linux, it's _so_ much easier and you spend _way_ less time working around these issues and messing with config files than you do de-botnetting Windows!
And then the: "Why do we want Linux to be more widely used? It's better the way it is, if it's harder to use it keeps the normies out."
There are ton more, I'm sure. It also seems like Linux users are far too heavily concerned with what OS others use more so than Windows users.

Sure, if you don't care about freedom and are on Linux and you need to use Windows software then you can just use a VM or Wine, but if you're on windows already, why go through all the trouble of migrating to a whole different OS just to be stuck using Window's software most of your time. Logically, just spend a little bit of time turning off unwanted crap and get on with using your OS.

This is from an unbiased OSX user's perspective. Now excuse me while I go put my mom's stockings on and finger my anus.

You claim to be computer literate but defend Windows
>>
>>58756960
The reason being, tech-literate people tend to work on PC and know what each OS is used for. Windows is the best operation system for working on a broad field.

You not knowing how to do basic actions - because all the settings you need are available in the GUI - shows that you aren't only tech-illiterate but also genuinely stupid, darling.

Yeah, I definitely never saw that. I guess I went down the wrong rabbit holes when configuring Fedora. I wish I had seen that UI, I pretty much found stuff telling me that Fedora Server doesn't have any graphical interfaces and that I had to use another install to get to my browser and see the UI of certain menus. I remember having to do something like that when trying to get Apache to unsuccessfully work. To be honest, I think the biggest lesson I learned from all of this is to use /g/, when I was working on Fedora I was just a lurker. Been a lurker on most sites since I feel people get fed up with questions.

I am definitely enthusiastic about doing this again simply because I would love to be free from Windows and its various limitations. I absolutely love the idea of customizing my OS, pretty much every time I install Windows I go through every menu in my control panel and set it to what I want. Then I go to Scheduled Tasks and turn off services I am not using. Then I install all my programs and go through every setting. It may be a bit basic compared to Linux, but the idea is there, I like my OS to work how I set it up. Truthfully you are limited by Windows, even adding something like Classic Shell is just a layer on top of an existing OS instead of how the OS actually functions. Combine that with an obsessive desire to know exactly what is being changed in my computer to the point I read every changelog, I think I was made for Linux, even if my lack of technical people around me means that I grew up acquainted with Windows. Glad to join you guys and hope things work better this time.

yes, they shoved everything into the GUI, making a shit CLI, but distros like Linux Mint and Ubuntu are caching up with only the advanced things to do in CLI, people even use the command prompt in windows, because sometimes file management or opening diskpart is faster than doing it with a mouse.

True, cmd is shit, however, there's bash, powershell and a bunch of tools that do their work. Even cmd works decently enough when you aren't trying to use it as your only interface.

You know, you have to move a mouse around to change the background too. And it's not like you "need" to do that.

My household has been an Apple household since 2014, and we've all been having a good laugh at this Windows 10 business. While Windows proceeds to degenerate into full-fledged adware, MacOS receives meaningful, incremental updates for free once a year. No upsells, no forced updates, no ads in sight (unless you open the App Store, which is obviously going to have ads, as it is literally a *storefront*).

I've had the same Macbook since 2013, and it hasn't degraded a bit (except for naturally-occurring battery fatigue).

>>

>even the App Store is better in MacOS

It is, and that's saying a lot. The Mac App Store is fucking terrible. It's one of my least favorite things about using a Mac. Maybe my #1 least favorite.

(Side note: AirPrint is one of my favorites. A standardized print protocol that means you never have to install printer drivers, ever. It should really be that way across all platforms at this point.)
>>
>>58760656
Ever tried using the windows app store then?
>>
>>58760731

Yeah, I did it a few times. Most of my experience with it was at a Surface Pro demo unit at Best Buy, but I have been guilty of the occasional misguided foray into the Windows App Store on my one Win10 machine (a TV-connected single-purpose game console). It's not good. The selection isn't good, the UI isn't good, and the default behavior of cramming ads into your Start menu definitely isn't good.

What a joke. Not only it takes longer to boot than dual booting, you're left with a terrible GPU on the other side, unless you're willing to use scripts to switch between GPUs all the time or buy yourself 2 GPUs for this kind of setup.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Windows 10, is in fact, NSA/Windows 10, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, NSA plus Windows. Windows 10 is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning NSA backdoors made useful by the Tailored Access Operations, Bullrun and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POTUS.
Many computer users run a modified version of the NSA backdoors every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of NSA which is widely used today is often called “Windows 10”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the NSA system, developed by the NSA Projects. There really is a Windows 10, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use.
Windows 10 is the adware: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The adware is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Windows 10 is normally used in combination with the NSA operating system: the whole system is basically NSA with Windows 10 added, or NSA/Windows 10. All the so-called “Windows 10” editions are really distributions of NSA/Windows 10.

What strange universe do you live in that makes it quicker to reboot into a different OS than to boot up a VM? With a VM it's literally just turn on the VM, play some gaymes then turn it off and you're instantly back in Linux. That even ignores the other advantages to a VM, like not giving Windows full hardware access and being able to firewall off unnecessary connections externally.
