It's certainly possible (see: the underhanded C contest) but it'd be a lot more difficult to do than backdooring Windows or Mac OS, and there'd be a much greater risk of exposure. Three-letter agencies don't like that. I bet they know about vulnerabilities in systemd and other free software that they don't tell anyone about, but I think it's doubtful they're inserting their own.

the NSA has hooks in systemd, selinux, linux kernel, gnu-utils, android patches and probably a ton of other things including office, photoshop, windows, mac os, ios, etc. just assume it's all owned and start from there.
