how do you like embedded as a field to work in?

I once had a colleague who used to do embedded programming freelance for a couple of years before settling down with a 9-5 job.
He said at peak he earned about 12.000$ (converted) every third week.
He even bought a house for well over 300.000$ and payed over half up front.
All of this before he turned 30.
